  • Zalmai, a photographer who was born in Afghanistan and was forced to flee to Switzerland at the age of 15 after the 1980 Soviet invasion, has been documenting the refugee crisis in Europe since September 2015. He has been photographing in Hungary, Greece and most recently at the Grande-Synthe and Calais camps in France.   • Grande-Synthe has gotten dangerously overcrowded and sanitation conditions are inadequate, with only 32 toilets to 2,500 people, according to Doctors Without Borders. The area which the camp sits on is also prone to flooding, and rain in recent weeks has created a difficult situation.   • Working on the refugee crisis in Europe reminds Zalmai of his own journey as a refugee. "It's not easy to leave your country, your family and friends. I understand how difficult it is for them right now and I want to bring their voice to the people who do not understand why they are here,” he said.
