Web Viewers May Replace TV with Video

August 13, 2008 10:22 AM

Television networks like to tell us that online TV consumers turn to the Web to catch up on episodes of shows they missed. But this only shows half the picture. Because while  Web video viewers do visit sites like ABC.com and NBC.com to catch up on “Grey’s Anatomy” or “The Office,” the other half are using the Web to fully replace the TV set, even to channel surf.

And one of the things Web drifters may find in their online travels is the Web series “You Suck at Photoshop,” both a commercial and a critical success. The show has logged 10 million views and collected three Webby Awards. The creators share their advice with the New Media Minute as to what works and what doesn’t work on the Web.

This week’s episode also explains how the Web series “Real World Green” inked a deal with a like-minded sponsor and why it’s important for ads to fit the message in a Web show.

Good show, Daisy! I love You Suck At Photoshop!

I wonder if a crawl of other shows thumbnails playing might attract channel surfers on a major station's website...

Thanks for the crucial observation on researching and matching sponsors to content. The "Real World Green" example should be very instructive for PlanetCheck.

Would you please be so kind as to have a look at http://www.planetcheck.com

While PlanetCheck has its' basic site, video production, and distribution working correctly, the sponsor matchup continues to be the most important challenge.

You might even recognize the host and owner of the show/site, Mo Mellady. She's the voice of Erin Esurance.

The quality of the shows mentioned above really ups the anty for many content creators. Everyone posting random videos out there should take heed! Good stories RULE and good planning can make the difference between failure and success.

Thanks Daisy!
New Media Minute is still one of my favs.
