Anti-War Sentiments at Austin Music Festival
September 29, 2008 6:56 PM
ABC News On Campus reporter Chelsey Delaney blogs:
On Friday night in Austin, Texas, you could have either been doing one of three things: seeing Mars Volta live, seeing Manu Chao live or watching the presidential debate.
Despite the usual devout enthrallment with politics, and unfortunately for the potential president-elects, the Austin City Limits music festival captured more of the Austinites' attention this weekend.
This being my third ACL, I knew the layout and the procedures, and assumed familiarity with the crowd and its character. But I had not seen an ACL crowd under the impact of political tension.
Of the 65,000 people who frequent the festival each day, Friday through Sunday, an overwhelming percent had to be college students. And not just college students: college students wearing hippie headbands, peace signs and preaching anti-war at every crossing.
While listening to the Raconteurs and noticing a distinct lyric promoting free speech, I took a look around and realized that I had come full-circle with my parents' generation.
Most, if not all of the musical performances I attended preached some form of humanitarian unity or peaceful alternative to any suggestion of violence.
There were no police in sight; fights didn't break out. Riots were not heard. People sat on the grass -- and yes, some smoked it -- and were in a happy mood.
The students who attended the fest are obvious the following week at school: They are the ones with the sunburns and fresh perspectives.
While some may have caught the debate on YouTube instead of watching it live, it didn't mean that they didn't care. They just saw an opportunity to release their own frustrations and took it.
My generation can't turn to many and say how we feel without being called naïve or being told that our youth has been corrupted by a bourgeoisie society. So we did what other generations have done.
We had our own peace.

Bravo, Chelsey. The "naive" are those who believe the red/blue shadow play is real.
The man behind the curtain is not just in plain sight, his pants are around his ankles.
Speak truth to power. Seek peace.

Speaking of You Tube, they have posted a split-screen image of McCain responding to Obama's claim that McCain will not meet with the Spanish President. He seems to twice clearly enunciate the word "horse" with a whispered "sh" sound. Why hasn't the MSM picked this up?

R. wood, oh I see you read the goofy Andrew Sullivan. He says "of course not" not the word Andy is saying.
You guys are really desperate aren't you? Lol.
By the way, I'm thrilled to know that between bouts of snorting coke, the hippies in Austin can support something.
Lol.

No Obama, the kids in Austin don't snort coke like you did in the '70s. They are intelligent, free-thinking, peace-loving, environmentally-conscious, politically motivated students. I'm proud of them. Today's hippies are tomorrow's senators, governors and presidents. Better to support them than to berate them.

Obamamama: How right you are. And now that we all can see, what we have in congress, moronic, mental midgets, who were the 60's & 70's hippies directing this country today. Your arguement is moot! Tell me, what the hell are you proud of? We are going to hell in a hand basket because of those people. ugghh!!
