Shooting Alert Shuts Down Syracuse Campus

November 24, 2008 1:22 PM

ABC News On Campus reporter Jason Tarr blogs:

Syracuse University issued an "Orange Alert" Monday morning and locked down the campus, advising students that shots had been fired about five blocks from the school.

A police spokesman told the local newspaper that the victim was not an SU student.

A witness told The Syracuse Post-Standard that he walked out of his apartment and saw a woman yelling that her son had been shot.  Police say the shooting was not random.

The condition of the 20-year old victim was unknown.

The alert informed students of a shooting on the 900 block of Madison Avenue, in a popular student neighborhood.  As police searched for a suspect, students were asked to stay indoors and barricade doors. Students said they received the messages via an automated telephone call, e-mail, and text message.

Shortly after noon, police reported that the man had been shot once in the neck in a drive-by shooting and had been taken to University Hospital.  The victim was seated in a parked car when the shooting occurred. Police are looking for a small gray car in connection with the shooting and are continuing to investigate, according to news reports.

By about 12:30 p.m., students had been told to resume their normal daily schedule but were asked to stay vigilant.

Students I spoke to in the area said they were unnerved.  According to those students, Madison Avenue was blocked off by yellow police tape.  Police officers were stationed up and down Madison Avenue and the adjacent streets. Students said they are being extra careful about locking their doors.  But they also said that after talking with Department of Public Safety officers, they believed that the shooting was an isolated incident rather than a threat to the general campus body.

They are shooting each other all over town here. ABC news should report about the 15 year old who beat to death his girlfriend's 20 month old baby the other day, bunch of low lifes. Just another day in paradise.
