iPhone -- Contemplating 3G

June 20, 2008 10:32 AM

I've had almost two weeks now to digest the announcement of the new iPhone 3G. Come July 11, I'm sure that I'll cave to my early adopter tendencies and join the queue outside my local Apple Store. How long will I be waiting in line? I was interested to know how much traction the upcoming phone has had with Internet users; if search volume is any indication, then the answer is less than expected (the spikes in January and June of last year correspond with the original iPhone's announcement and release, reIphone_abcnewsspectively).

And if we examine the top searches for the terms "iPhone" and "3G," consumers are focused on the cost of the new device, "iPhone 3G price," and the difference between the new 3G phone and today's iPhone, "compare iPhone and iPhone 3G."

If you would like more insights into our Internet and search behavior, you can read the first chapter of my book, "Click: What Millions of People Do Online and Why it Matters," by clicking here.

Don't give in Bill! The new iPhone doesn't have video capabilities!

No video capabilities? lol I've read on two different sites that it's vague whether there will be video but it seems to point to "yes there will be." But that isn't for sure. Anyway, my biggest issue is the fact that now that the price is better, now it's going to be impossible to unlock for another carrier. I loathe AT&T and the fact that you have to purchase an AT&T plan before leaving the store, not to mention if you turn around and cancel you have to return the iPhone, has me saying no thanks. If I could take it to my own carrier I would do it.

The price really isn't better it's worse. Yeah the start-up cost is down to 200 from 400, but the monthly plan went up 10 bucks. So with the 2 year agreement AT&T requires, you end up paying more.

It went up by 15, not 10. If you look close you have to pay $5 more to keep the texting plan.

But you get 3G/GPS etc. So I don't know, if I could take it to another carrier, I think it would almost be worth it. But you are right, AT&T is really screwing people over with costs on it.

ATT isnt screwing people on costs with this as much as apple is.... apple is taking a cut of the monthly bill, something that no other phone provider is currently doing.

wrong Beth... Apple was taking a part of the monthly cost but has now changed their business model to represent that of the other leading phone companies... reason being that they are looking to expand... AT&T is subsidizing the price of the new iphone and thus screwing its customers on a monthly basis... look at the 400$ increase to buy just an iphone without a contract bud, it shows AT&T is eating that 400 bucks and gaining it back in its contract
