Jib Jab - Republicans, Democrats and Sense of Humor
July 18, 2008 5:17 PM
Political satire appears to be dominating campaign news this week. With the latest Jib Jab creation Time for Some Campaignin' this week, I thought it would be an opportune time to ask a new red-state, blue-state question: who has the greatest sense of humor, Republicans or Democrats?
The video which takes jabs at both sides of the aisle features, amongst others, McCain riding a tank over Barack Obama to Obama's frolicking in an idyllic forest, singing about change while riding a decidedly friendly unicorn.
Using the Mosaic segmentation of the U.S. population, I identified which of the 50 types identified most with the Democratic and Republican parties. The types that indexed the highest for visits to JibJab.com over the last four weeks were Major University Towns, Mature America, Academic Influences and Young Cosmopolitans which, with the exception of Mature America identify mostly with liberal thought and the Democratic Party.
The least likely types to visit JibJab.com in the same timeframe include America's Farmlands, Military Family Life and Upscale Suburbanites which all lean towards the right and identify mostly with the Republican Party. Perhaps Internet data along with humor levels indicates consumer's perception of bias in JibJab's satire.

Dems get the joke. Republicans ARE the joke.

What's "Mosaic"?
Posted by: allison | Jul 18, 2008 10:08:07 PM
Mosaic
"The basic premise of geodemographic segmentation is that people tend to gravitate towards communities with other people of similar backgrounds, interests, and means".
So it is a basic premise, not proven fact. The accuracy of such a statement
is dubious at best
"Dems get the joke. Republicans ARE the joke".
Please, for once drop the "I know you are but what am I?" mentality and grow up. Enough of the divisive scat.
I thought the Jib-Jab parody was great! Poking fun is a political tradition. But when it is mean spiritted (see the "gentleman" above), then it is nothing but disrespect. I may not agree with Mr. Obama, but I will respect him.
Keep up the good work Jib-Jab!!
And hey, nice pic Bill......

A recent study showed that Republicans are a lot happier than Democrats. Democrats are fine as long as they get their way but get nasty when they hear an opposing viewpoint. That is very evident on all ABC forums that have public participation. Even ABC has a low tolerance for conservative opposing viewpoints as evidenced by significant censoring.

Republicans are more happy? I don't think so Bill! Republicans are more NASTY! Listen to that vile mouthpiece Rush Limbaugh, (I refer to him as Limberger as in the cheese!)Republicans aren't happy unless they're left alone to feed their greed at the expense of everyone els. God forbid that you tell a Republican no, you can't do that! Watch what happens then!

This republican loves jibjab, and The Onion... I'm an area man.

then you are the exception. the personal assaults on Obama and his wife are widespread and frankly disgusting.
I'm no "gentleman," by the way. I'm female, in my 50's, and an Independent who supports Obama. And your inability to take a joke is a prime example of the non-humor coming from the right. Perhaps you prefer the kind of humor that mocks someone's personal appearance. There are plenty of those side-splitters all over the ABC forums. Here's one you might like - "Here's a tip to all those covering the ears, I mean the event, don't mention his huge flapping Dumbo like ears." that would tend to support my initial statement, don't you think?

I am older white Republican female who initialy supported Hillary, but now switched to McCain. I found this joke on a blog and I don't know the author- but I thought it was funny and yet not derogatory to either side:
Question: "What is wrong with Obama jokes?"
Answer: "Blacks don't think they're funny and Whites don't think they're jokes"
Posted by: teri | Jul 19, 2008 11:15:40 AM
I would say the answer to the question of who has a better sense of humor is clear.....any group of people who can put forth someone like Hillary as a candidate to hold the highest elected office in this land, and keep a straight face...man they win hands down....funniest thing I have ever seen.
Don't worry Dem's you guys have my vote ( for being the funniest game in town)

Hear hear!!
It's funny, but liberals are childish and facist when it comes to discenting opinions. I know of no instances where a conservative has interrupted a speaker with pie throwing or just trying to shout down the orator because they just don't want any opinion other than their own. That is akin to a child covering their ears and shouting LA_LA_LA just because they don't want to hear it.
Nice.....

You so right Phawkins I have never seen a conservitive do anything like that I guess you have never watched Bill O'Lielly or Hannity shout down anyone or when The VP told a member of congress to go F themself or when I was at a rally for Bill Clinton in 1996 and a group of your fellow good never do anything like this people were shouting the foulest BS Bills way with curses and descriptions of what acts they thought he had done with children and women there and high fived each other as they were escorted out by police oh the list is long so don't be self righteous just because ( and you all forget this ) your called the right doesn't make it so !

Phawkins : LIBERALS are childish? Who is yucking it up at the "big dumbo ears" jokes?
Posted by: cturple | Jul 19, 2008 4:31:26 PM
I can't believe either party - both are bigoted, self - righteous, hard headed believers that they and only they are right. And, when they spew their "facts" they do so in a way that totally demeans and ridicules the other party. Do all of you forget they we're all people - all of us have faults, are prone to mistakes, and have lots of failings? Which one of you is perfect? Yes, politicians make mistakes, that doesn't make them demons. Their supporters (on both sides) are also human. Get over it. We all have different points of view - and THANK GOD WE LIVE IN AMERICA WHERE WE CAN VOICE THOSE OPINIONS. Maybe we should all try to do our best to help others see our views - politely, civilly, and mostly compassionately.

You know, one of the most interesting facets of liberal response is re-direction. Rather than stay on topic, the revert to the "yeah but..." response . "yeah, but Bush...etc,etc." I would dearly love to get a liberal to stay on topic just ONCE and address the issue at hand and not stray and try to play the blame game.

Ummmmm....yeah...more of the "I know yu are, but what am I?...."
And who the hell is Bill O'Lielly.

cturple how did you get to 50 years old with sheer idiocy as your main thought process.
You are so appalled at the treatment of Oabama and his Wife in the press, what press exactly, The new yorker? That is as liberal of a publication as they come so save your blame for someone else. Also I am sure you have not been in such a tizzy over the press and it's treatment of George and Laura Bush of the past 7 years have you? I didn't think so.
So lady, do us all on the internet here a favor and go have your hot flashes somewhere else and leave the real conversation for the people with brains, you progesterone filled lunatic.

Your McCain-ish play on my name is certainly sure to be a big hoot in the republican jerk-circles.
