Online Video and the Twenty Minute Threshold
July 03, 2008 2:29 PM
This week I was fortunate to be a guest on This Week in Media hosted by Daisy Whitney. During the podcast, the topic of convergence of television and online video came up. An interesting phenomenon that we've noticed in our data is that, when viewing videos online, twenty minutes appears to be our threshold (most likely viewing multiple clips within that time-frame). I would guess that this threshold is related to our comfort (or discomfort) watching video on a computer versus television screen.
Here's a chart of the average session time for Youtube.com, from their launch in late 2005 to present. You'll notice that while session time ramped very quickly in the first six months, we've been hovering around twenty minutes over the last two years.
Will the latest developments in online video allow us to increase average viewing time? Do you watch online videos, and if so, how long are your average sessions?
