Jail for Sex? Couple 'In So Much Trouble'

July 10, 2008 6:48 PM

Dubai_beach_080710_main_2 ABC News' Lara Setrakian reports: A British couple was arrested for a romantic romp on Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach. The two allegedly were caught having sex on the beach -- an act very much against the law in this modern, but still traditional Muslim society.

The case is front page news in the Gulf, where reactions range from sympathy to “they should have known better” indifference.

The woman, identified in the press as Michelle Palmer, 30, spoke to reporters about facing a possible 3-6 years in jail.

“They are going to make an example of us and we’re going to get a higher sentence,” Palmer told reporters. “We are in so much trouble. ... Until someone is in this situation, they could never know what it’s like. It's bad — it’s so, so bad. They are being pushed into a corner to make an example of us. I’m panicking. I can’t say anything else.”

Dubai invites tourists from around the world to take in its Persian Gulf shores and fast-expanding skyline.

But there's a high price to not knowing the laws that keep Western visitors in line with conservative Middle Eastern values. During the month of Ramadan, for example, it is criminal to eat, drink or chew gum in public during daylight hours (Muslims fast until sunset).

Any sexual activity outside of marriage is technically illegal in Dubai, and public displays of affection are frowned upon.

Travel advice from the British Foreign Office states that there have been arrests of people kissing in public.

For the estimated 25,000 Americans living in the UAE and the many more who visit, the message is hands off your partner or you could be doing hard time.

Their country, their laws.

Boy are they going to get screvved....

Now they wish they had gone to Florida.

They should receive the maximum as allowed by Dubai. How stupid--why did they not "get a room" They have no morals to do such an act in public. No pity for either of them.

Why is it whenever foreigners are in Mid-Eas countries we/they must adhere to their customs or face harsh penalties. Yet, when they come to htis country, they bring their customs with them and we must once again adhere to them. Something wrong with this picture

Come on, she has been there three years and this is a second offense. This is a small public beach. She knew better and she ought to be worried. Her partner was there on vacation, but also should have known better. Shame on them both.

Know the laws where you plan to travel, then follow them.Six years thoguh?

Posted by: -UA- | Jul 10, 2008 7:28:32 PM

They would be arrested here in the States (and rightly so) for the same thing. They just wouldn't be crucified for it. But c'mon. I know that their room was not that far away.

It looks like Dubai is a modern city, however the ancient Muslim ways are still the rule of law. Tourists should simply never, ever, ever go where fanatics make the laws. It is sort of like having to travel through berkley california!

who could have known about that. the article says "allegedly". If the country feels that strongly about it - post the law on a damn wall.

Let's not forget that THIS is the country Bush wanted running America's ports.

Let's not forget that this is the country that Halliburton now calls home. The country Halliburton chose for their headquarters after the U.S. gave them no-bid contract after no-bid contract for the war in Iraq.

It is most definitely the couple's fault. WHO in the WORLD would not be able to shell over a couple of twenties to fulfill their so-called primal needs?!?! The fact is, if this were occurring anywhere else in the world, it wouldn't be big news, even if those people were arrested. Howeverrr, take it to a Muslim nation, where there are MORALS, and we get this kind of idiocy. Their fault. The law is going to get them. The End.

Let's not forget this is the country that enabled 9/11.

The moral of this story is this: When in another country, follow their laws. Before visiting a foreign country, visit the US State Dept's Web site to become aware of risks. That said, 3-6 years in jail for this "crime" does seem a bit harsh. I hope the judge takes mercy on them and let's them go with deportation.

Stupid Is as Stupid Does...

Posted by: moosedog | Jul 10, 2008 7:47:17 PM

These two were very foolish. There is very little freedom or flexibility in an Islamic country, and a visitor would be wise to obey ALL laws to the letter. If this is unacceptable, then they shouldn't GO there!

Dubai MAY show leniency by deporting this couple... IF they're lucky.

I have no pity for these 2 exhibitionists. They knew exactly what they were doing, I get sick and tired of Westerners going to another country, and just saying, the hell with you, we can do what we want to do. Their room was probably only a stone's throw away, however, there is no such thing as breaking the law, unless you get "caught" Guess what?

"I get sick and tired of Westerners going to another country, and just saying, the hell with you, we can do what we want to do."

If you like Dubai so much, go live there. Yes, these people were stupid, but so is glorifying a barbaric system like Islam.

Enter Dubai at your own risk.

Posted by: newzi | Jul 10, 2008 7:57:36 PM

3-6 years!! Sure it's not the most classy thing to do, but come on. I understand the 'their country, their rules' argument - but they are promoting themselves as a tourist destination. Severe punishments like that make the nation look very very bad. Imagine losing years of your life over something like this.

What were those idiots thinking? Why go to a country like that in the first place, responsible for all our oil problems in this country, repressive toward women, sex, gays, etc.

Theses two are in trouble. How could anybody these days not know about the middle east and their customs and laws. This may not even fly in Lebanon which is quite liberal.

I lived in Malaysia, where its illegal to bring drugs into the country. Its pretty well known and they hang you for it. People still did it and then wondered about the severity of the punishment.

Posted by: borninkl | Jul 10, 2008 8:12:56 PM

Why is Islam barbaric? It is just another religion like Christianity, Catholicism, Judaism, etc. Don't listen to everything you hear on the news. If all the muslin people were crazy we would be having things happening daily here, can you not see through the propaganda of the Muslim bogeyman? If you go to another country, you must obey the laws no matter how crazy or outlandish you might believe. We are a great country and should start acting like it again and start worrying about our dollar instead of the world's problems. If we brought our troops home from around the world and protected America, who would be crazy enough to attack us? People get upset when you occupy their land, just as we would, it does not matter what they believe in, it is just wrong and is against our American ideals and founders advice. Now Iran, WTF have they done to us? Look up Operation Ajax, we installed thier government and meddled in their affairs, our dollar is a mess right now, almost par with the peso for the first time in history, that is why your gas is so expensive people.
