Busiest U.S. Airport Opens New Security Lanes
October 28, 2008 3:29 PM
Traveling with a young family? Your best bet is probably the green lane.
Rushing to a business meeting with just your briefcase? Jump into the black diamond lane with the other seasoned travelers who have memorized what to remove from their carry-ons.
Going on another casual vacation and tired of waiting in line behind people who don't have a clue what they're doing? The blue lane has your name written all over it.
Today, the busiest airport in the country opened new security lanes that allow travelers to select the line best for their personal pace.
Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport becomes the latest airport to officially launch the Black Diamond Self-Select Program, already introduced in several airports nationwide. With Tuesday's announcement, the Transportation Security Administration hopes travelers in the airport consistently ranked busiest in the country will soon have fewer hassles.
"Hartsfield-Jackson's goal is to exceed our customers' expectations, and these new security checkpoint areas, security lanes and more convenient screening procedures will decrease checkpoint wait times," said Ben DeCosta, the airport's aviation general manager.
TSA hopes to slash wait times in Atlanta with the addition of one entry point and 10 new security lanes to help lines move quicker as the upcoming holiday travel season approaches. A total of 250,000 people travel through Atlanta's airport each day to travel on 34 passenger airlines.
Data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was the country's busiest airport in 2007, just as it has been for more than a decade. More than 42 million domestic and international passengers boarded planes at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson last year.

Anyone in the black diamond line who trips the metal detector should be tasered as punishment.

It's a good idea. I hope to see them implement that at other airports around the country.
