POST CONVENTION NOTES

June 19, 2006 6:36 PM

Behind the scenes at the National Association of  Hispanic Journalists convention the buzz was about the growth of Spanish language media.  Especially since several attendees are involved in negotiating the sale of Univision. In the months since the top Spanish language network put itself on the market, the question hasn't been whether anyone would be interested, but how much they'd be willing to pay.

Univision may find out this week when the first bidder comes their way. Mexico's Televisa group is expected to be the most aggressive bidder. Insiders told me Televisa will look into English-language production as well – possibly joining forces with an English language network.

Meanwhile, the term "illegal immigrant" is strongly  opposed by some NAHJ members but others disagree. At the gala dinner Saturday night NAHJ Hall of Fame inductee Henry Alfaro, veteran LA reporter, used the term "illegal immigrants" unapologetically during his speech. "I'm not PC," he said. Many in the audience agreed, others’ jaws dropped.

One of the most interesting panels at the convention was called "Covering Cuba After Fidel," panelists included  Juan Tamayo, the Miami Herald's Chief of Correspondents, Kirby Jones, the President of the US-Cuba Trade Association and Brian Latell, author of "After Fidel: The Inside Story of Catsro's Regime and Cuba's Next Leader."

More questions were asked than answered but interesting to listen to some of the contingency plans of the media.   Will the journalists make the mistake of putting too many resources in Havana and ignore the provinces?  Tamayo told me The Miami Herald is looking for a network to partner with on coverage.  The networks also have their contingency plan for when Fidel is no more so maybe the Herald will soon find a network partner.

Were there anymore so called "interesting" questions asked?

It will be very interesting to see who acquires Univision, especially with the somewhat belated realization that there is a burgeoning Hispanic population in the US. Televisa would certainly be a valuable partner, and it would have an entry into the US market for further endeavors. It would also be very interesting if a major US broadcaster, such as ABC or CBS, entered the bidding. Please keep us informed as to who wins.

I'm intrigued about the contingency plans for the media when Fidel dies. What are their plans, especially when his death is announced?
