ARE WE A SYSTEM OF "POWER APARTHEID"?

May 18, 2007 9:36 AM

Will Congress pass it? Will America buy it?  The immigration battle in our country has just begun that's for sure.   But another battle getting less attention is the battle to make America's most powerful institutions more diverse. In many ways the immigration deal and the record breaking Census Bureau figures also released yesterday that say that America has become more diverse, with minorities topping 100 million for the first time in 2006, go hand in hand.

So as Congress struggles with immigration reform, the population of the United States is growing increasingly darker. Our lawmakers and society at large need to start struggling with better social  integration so that our politicians, judges and journalists, all power centers in this country,  reflect the diversity of the population.  This is currently not the case.  America is more diverse, sure, but Integrated?

Yesterday Sen. Arlen Spector, R-Pa., predicted that immigration will become more relevant in American politics than even the issue of social security.  Although the immigration reform bill, which would grant legal status to millions of people who are currently in the U.S. illegally, was a bipartisan announcement and has the chance to be historic, a re-energized and extremely heated national debate will take place before any immigration reform has a chance to become law.  And in fact it may die and never become law.

There is a long road ahead, and the question now is: Where will the debate lead?   With the White House blessing the deal, the unprecedented bipartisanship in this Congress was a singular moment of political harmony.  Can this spirit of bipartisanship strengthen across the nation, or will the immigration debate deepen America's cultural divide and hurt diversity efforts in schools, businesses and social organizations?

In fact, there is already strong dissent  to the bi-partisan deal in Congress and on Main street. Two senators engaged in the talks from the beginning, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., skipped the unveiling of the deal. Both have strong reservations about the compromise. Even Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., refrained from endorsing the bill, which tops 300 pages.   Critics call this bill "amnesty" and compare it to the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 passed under Ronald Reagan, which was ineffective in curbing illegal immigration.  On the other side, immigration-rights supporters and even the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi say the Senate bill must be improved on the issues of family and guest workers.   They also say "anti-immigrationists" fear "the Browning of America."

The  Congressional process begins with debate in the full Senate on Monday, in the end the deal may go by the waste side and not become law.  But the battle to make our institutions reflect our newer, more diverse America is a battle that won't go away as easily - a "power apartheid," where Hispanics, Blacks and Asians are not in key political, business and social positions cannot be best for our country.  The Census Department estimates that four states and the District of Columbia already have a majority population composed of African, Asian or Hispanic heritage. California leads this diversity trend, home to 21 percent of the nation's minority population.  The long term consequences of the growing number of minorities is a test the of the strength of America's commitment to equality of treatment.

A strain is already showing up when we look at who holds positions of power; in businesses, elected office and media across the country.   How will the dominant culture  in America integrate the new diverse population, in positions of power?  I think mainstream America will adapt to the cultures of other ethnicities, not only because of the country's commitment to equality but also because it  will prove better for business and society at large.

Undoubtedly, this wave of immigration will change America, perhaps in ways that no immigrant group has before in history.  Will these changes help our country? Is this diversity good for America? Do we have a choice?  Post your view at the Exclusiva blog.

I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with
Seed.
Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous
Flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started
building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to
the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the
chairs, the table...everywhere. Then some of the birds turned mean:
They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of
My own pocket. And others birds were boisterous and loud: They sat on the
feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and
demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. After a while, I couldn't
even sit on my own back porch anymore. I took down the bird feeders and
in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down
the many nests they had built all over the patio. Soon, the back yard was
like it used to be...quite, serene and no one demanding their rights to a
free meal.

Now lets see...our government gives out free food, subsidized housing,
free medical care, free education and allows anyone born here to be a
automatic citizen. Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands.
Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments
are housing 5 families: you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an
emergency room doctor: your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools
because over half the class doesn't speak English: Corn Flakes now come in a
bilingual box; I have to press "one" to hear my bank talk to me in
English, and people waving flags other than "Old Glory" are squawking
and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties.
Maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder.

Finally, a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, 1907:

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the AMERICAN FLAG...We have room but one language her, and that is the ENGLISH LANGUAGE...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the AMERICAN PEOPLE."

Does this open the door for lawsuits from anyone currently in jail for breaking any of our laws? If 12 million lawbreakers are given special treatment why not Americans?

On the issue of just learning english: How? when every channel almost is in spanish and stores are putting items in spanish. Workers' Compensation in the State of California is done in spanish. Adds come to the house in spanish. When are they going to learn english?

The decision which came through yesterday for amnesty (and that is what it is), made it clear to the American people that our government has become a dictatorship. No longer do we have a government by the people, for the people. It has been made clear to our elected officials that 80% of the taxpaying citizens say NO to amnesty of any sort; however, we have basically been told to go to hell.

Before my tax dollars go to social services for another nation (Mexico) that is far wealthier than our own bankrupt country; I demand this be put to a vote by the people in 2008.

I do not think that 100% hispanic barrios of Los Angeles which have been ethnically cleansed from black and white people are more diverse.

Besides that I find this author's remarks on "darkening" of population sick and racist. Is he supporter of ethnic cleansing? One would say so. Maybe there is a time to lodge a formal complaint.

You can make a difference. Contact your Representative and tell them to cram this down the throats of the Senate and President.

Its really incredible and quite disturbing when 95% of "Real" Americans don't want this immigration deal, but it still manages to go through anyway. When is our goverment going to listen to us. Anyone who violates the laws of this country should not be given "deals". They should be removed from the country anyway and everyway possible. There are millions of people who are trying to enter this country through legal means that should be given first preverence. These "Criminals" should be treated that way. Case closed

Posted by: Dave | May 18, 2007 11:52:54 AM

I am 15 years old and i feel that our groverment is trying to do with the 12 million illegal immigratants is wrong. They should not give them any Visas because they don't desverv them. They came here illegaly, and what do we do? We welcome them and suspect them to pay 5,000 dollars "wich most dont have any way" over a time peiord of 8 years.
But wait, than send them to their country and make them get anthor visa. In my oppoion, I relly dought that they woul even do it any way!! And even if

Posted by: Petter Griffen | May 18, 2007 12:00:15 PM

It is wired that 95% of Real Americans don't want thei immifration deal. Why should we give them a deal. They should be sent back and we need to pay more tax money to strangethen our borders. look at the numbers they are 12 mill in the country that should have never been here. we need to sweep up this durt and put it where it belongs. its not like i don't care it is just that this needs to stop!

Posted by: Brofy | May 18, 2007 12:06:19 PM

Why is are government protecting these people? They do not deserve to have this deal. They broke the law by entering into this country illegally and there should be a punishment for that is that what we have laws for? I know as an American if I broke the law there is a punishment that comes with that. They should not be protected by any of our rights that we enjoy as US Citizens. They should not get welfair, food stamps, Wic. The ACLU needs to stay out of it and stop protecting the rights of illegal immigrants and foucus more on the unjust of the citizens of this country.

WHY IS IT THAT CONGRESS NEVER EVER LISTENS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO THEY REPRESENT (?). THEY SEEM TO LISTENS ONLY TO MONEY AND THE ILLEGAL ALIENS. NEVER THE PEOPLE WHOSE COUNTRY IT IS.
WE NEED REFORM ALRIGHT - OF CONGRESS. STARTING WITH ALL THE IDIOTS THAT HAVE BEEN THERE SINCE GOD WAS BORN, TO THE LOBBIESTS REMOVE THE OUTRAGEOUS BENEFITS THAT THEY HAVE VOTED THEMSELVES AND ABOVE ALL MAKE IT AN HONOR TO SERVE YOUR COUNTRY AGAIN - NOT JUST SEEK TO RAPE THE SYSTEM AND THROW THE PEOPLE A FEW SCRAPS OCCASIONLY.
WHEN DO WE GET REPRESENTATION???? AND DON'T TELL ME THAT CRAP ABOUT VOTING - IT DOESN'T WORK ANY MORE!

Posted by: jim | May 18, 2007 12:22:52 PM

I think this is Amnesty, I say deport all 12 million of them, they say 12 but i bet it is 25 million.Hell no, send them all back home.

Why is it that our Journalist never ask the tough questions anymore? Diane Sawyer interviewed Sen Kennedy this morning but all he did was dodge questions. His pat answer was "we debated this many hours" & "we had a lot of talk on this compromise". WHO had the talks? Why is it ok to have this talk in PRIVATE & BEHIND CLOSED DOORS? I was under the impression that our representatives in Congress are suppose to bring these bills to the floors of Congress & Senate and have OPEN discussions of all BILLS! Why arent any news journalist asking why this is being done behind the American public's back? Why are they not following procedures and doing it in public so we can hear our states elected officials opinions? Doesn't this "smell a little fishy"? Why do you suppose they would do this? Maybe because we have half of them running for President and they don't want to be quoted later as having been for this bill and they know that the majority of Americans are against this joke of amnesty they call a "compassionate bill". If they are allowed to sneak this bill by it means that anyone here illegal will be able to get ALL our RIGHTS as CITIZENS even if they never get anything more than a Green Card and that means from the very day the President signs it not when they "legally" become a citizen. Hello - can't Americans see that our medical services, educational services, legal services, college service, social security services will not survive? Our country can not survive as is with this horrific added responsiblity. Where is all the common sense people? Has everyone turned into POWER HUNGRY politicans? Of course the Democratic party wants this bill to pass - they want to add more voters to their party and think this will give them 20 million new members. I am a Democrat and I can see where the are hoping to go with this. THIS BILL IS WRONG ALL THE WAY AROUND IT. My GRANDFATER was an immigrant so don't think I am a racist. It took my grandfater 15 years to become a US citizen - BUT HE DID IT THE RIGHT WAY and so should EVERYBODY!
Write/Call your representatives & senators tell them NOT to vote for this bill. THis bill will destroy our country.

People it's called NAU. Google it.

This is a much broader problem then just illegal immigration.

ILLEGALS are LAWBREAKERS. They are not citizens of the USA. They have NO RIGHTS in this country. The government needs to enforce the laws we have on the books NOW. They need to change some of them like being a citizen if you are born here. They think that makes the whole family welcome. How would you like it if someone bust down your door and says I am here to live whether you like it or not. To me that is illegal entry and against the law. Why aren't OUR USA CITIZEN VOICES being heard FIRST. If Ted Kennedy likes them so much why doesn't he go to Mexico or move all of them in his house not ours.
Let him spend his money on them NOT OURS! WHY doesn't the Mexican govt. and citizens try to improve their own country for them. Do they spend their time and money on legal citizens here? NO they send their money back to Mexico.
They separate their families to work here so don't give me the pitiful 'break up the family' story. They have sucked our social services & jobs dry & we are supposed to like that...when our own citizens have to suffer. I have not given my permission to spend my money this way. It is like 'spitting' in the faces of the people who have gone thru the legal process to become citizens.Congress
will be minus the ones who vote to give AMNESTY..rewarding law breakers. Why should we abide by the laws...they don't!

Posted by: CJ | May 19, 2007 2:28:49 PM

Why don't all of you people on this blog write all these things to YOUR CONGRESSMAN and "The Decider" instead of here????? ARE YOU AFRAID????? The idiots in the US government would certainly have a better chance of seeing your opinion if you did. I write mine all the time (a lot of good it does), but at least you won't just be writing each other back and forth.

Posted by: artist0122 | May 19, 2007 2:29:52 PM

I say all illegals should do a 4 year tour of duty in Irag before they get to use all the free services here in the US. Let them EARN their citizenship by proving they REALLY want to be here! If we had 20 million illegals in Irag al-Quida would run for the hills!

Posted by: Steve | May 19, 2007 3:17:48 PM

The media just doesn't get it. The objections are not to the RACE of the ILLEGAL immigrants.

The objections are about the fact that these people willfully and deliberately violated the law by (1) entering this country unlawfully, (2) drive without a licenses (3) drive without insurance and (4) used forged documenets (2 crimes - forgery and uttering) or stolen documents (Identify theft.) They ignore the law if it gets in their way. They are NOT "honest" nor "good."

By their standards, it is okay to break the law if it gets them what they want. Guess bank robbery and drug dealing should be allowed as well if the person doing it is "just trying to get ahead and support their family."

All the whining about the proposal stopping them from bringing every shirt-tail cousin in after them is just that, whining for the sake of whining. They already deserted their famiies to enter this country illegally. It didn't matter to them then and it doesn't matter now.

Huffington Post is one of the most liberal news websites around. The posters on that site were going crazy over the idea of allowing lawbreakers to become legal residents - and those were the liberals. The conservative trolls were agreeing with themm 100%. Amazing - this proposal has united the far left and the far right in unanimous outrage at the idea of allowing criminals to become residents and citizens.

This journalist's premise that this issue is racial is total B.S. America is the most "diverse" country in the world. I work at a fortune 50 company and we have executives of all race, creed, and color. And minorities currently occupy many of the highest positions in our government.

Americans aren't afraid of the "Browning of America". Here's a list of some of the things we are afraid of with our current crisis of unchecked illegal immigration:

1. Overwhelming burden on our social services such as schools, social security, health care, etc.
2. Language and culture - LEGAL immigrants have to go through English , civics, and American History classes. Why should illegal immigrants get a pass on this?
3. Disease - Tuberculosis, a disease that was virtually eliminated in this country decades ago is currently on the rise due to illegal immigrants bringing it from their home countries.
4. Terrorism - three out of the six terrorists who were plotting to attack Fort Dix were illegals and came across the Mexican border at Brownsville, TX. Most illegal aliens are not terrorists, but how do we know who is who?
5. Taxes - many illegals don't pay taxes because they work at jobs where they are paid in cash.
6. Insurance - I personally know several people who have been in car accidents with illegal aliens who were uninsured.
7. Identity fraud - there's a huge black market for getting illegals fake ID's, social security numbers, etc.
8. Depression of wages - this is basic supply and demand. As the supply of worrkers increases, employers are able to pay less because there are more people competing for the jobs. And don't give me the tired line of "Americans don't want to do those kinds of jobs". Americans were doing them before the illegals came and will be willing to do them again.

Saying that we are afraid of the "Browning of America" without addressing the real concerns is just pathetic and fundamentally dishonest.

My father, a WW2 veteran passed away last October. My mother, herself a vet, applied for her social security pension and widows pension. She has lived in the U.S. all of her life but it took over 5 months for her to get her benefit checks started. An illegal alien can apply for and get their benefits in 45 days.

Please protect our country against the illegal alliens. They want everyting and feel they deserve it all, but refuse to speak ENGLISH, just pick up the phone and your instructed to press #2, even Social Security, WHY, do we cater to them so? My American-French parents had to learn to speak ENGLISH no-one made exceptions for them. The Spanish or Latino refuse adapt to our country, and seem to want to change it to reflect the country they left to come to ours to take over all of the benefits we have worked so hard for and still we have to fight for what we should have, were the aliens get it outright. We had better watch out, or we will no longer have control of our country. We have given up so much of it so far, and continue to give it away, and leave out own out in the cold and continue to make it harder for the ever growing population to even exist for more is taken and more expected to pay out in order to even exist. Why and since when do these ILLEGAL ALIENS come before OUR CITIZENS?

I resent that he lumps Asian Americans in this mix, as far as I know and can attest for my Southeast Asian community. We do not feel our rights have been violated in any way, especially considering our journey to the United States was from persecution, war-torn, human right atrocities and re-education camps. There isn't large contingency of Asian Americans usurping from the system or being provided biligual services, why doesn't the media start calling it what it really is... Illegal Mexican Immigration! And for all the Hispanic/Latino agenda pushers stop being our speaking horn, we happen to favor speaking English and assimilating into American culture. Because that's what we are Americans!

Posted by: Rose | May 20, 2007 10:55:39 AM

we dont fear the browning of america but we do fear that this country will become like the countries these people left if they somehow become the majority. why would they want the values of the place they fled to become the values of the place they seek sanctary. pro immigration activists seem to think the gravy train will run forever no matter how much the system is abused.

I came from a Central American country, so I am an American, Right?
I go back to visit my country of origin some times and I can tell you that I would like to live there, but what kind of life that will be, If when I want to go to a fast food restaurant I pay the same prices that I would pay over in the United Stated, but if I want to get a job in the same fast food restaurant not only they want to pay about $400.00 per month or less, but also they require a curriculum at least 2 years of college and some times more.
I left my family overthere.I missed the birth of my nieces and my kids had relatives that they barely known. I would stayed in my country if I had a dignifying paying job.
I grew up with out, my descendants won't go with out.
I will like to see a broadcast about the immigrants in their original countries, go to this third world countries and interview the workers, kids bagging groceries and they do not get pay, the only reason they bag and carry out your groceries is to be able to get a couple of coins (tips) to help their parents financialy.
Women working as maids and get paid about $100.00 per month and people working at Burger King, Pizza Hot, etc and get paid about $400.00 a month.
This is why immigration is so high.
Would you stay in that country if you do not have a dignifying life?

Here in California, many Hispanics are indeed in "key political, business and social positions", such as mayor of L.A. (a former campus radical who explicitly supports illegal immigration and who's a former leader of a racial separatist group), former Lt. Gov (a former member of that same racial separatist group), several state reps. (including former members of that same racial separatist group).

Unfortunately, here in CA it's difficult to find a Mexican-American elected official who isn't to some degree an ethnic nationalistic supporter of illegal immigration. About the only distinction is to what degree they act like they're actually working for Mexico. That doesn't exactly portend well for Puente's vision of "Integration".

Exhibit One
Watch the speaker of the CA Assembly snap to attention and salute Mexico's national anthem after failing to do so for America's national anthem:

"Power Apartheid".. Now that's a new one. "Browning"?? Now that is plain Racism added to blatant racism by the media - This article is just as racist as any other of those that are written to promote the criminal illegal aliens who are making obnoxious demands of the American people. I would like to see ABC post one article that reveals the illegal aliens as they truly are... All Illegal aliens are criminals, many if not most are Felons that have stolen identities or forged Social Security numbers in order to further defraud the American people. The illegal aliens are not here to become Americans, the illegal aliens do not adopt the culture and language of the United States, the illegal aliens do not abide by our laws, and We The People (by 90%) do not approve of their demand for amnesty and "benefits" for their illegal behavior. It sounds like the writer of this latest hit piece against The American Citizen is a promoter of anarchy and illegal criminal behavior - it might be worth taking a good look at those who promote and harbor illegal aliens. We (the American people - Red Yellow Black & White - AND Brown) have just about had enough of this insanity.

Dear Mercedes,
Most Americans have empathy for those who want to come here for a better life. In fact most of us are immigrants ourselves or are children or grandchildren of immigrants. The problem we face today is that we need to have a safe, orderly, legal process, none of which we have right now.

I blame our politicians for putting us in this mess more than I do the people who have come here illegally. For decades they have refused to enforce our borders and current immigration law, and have lacked the leadership to make positive changes. And now Congress and the President seem to want to wipe the slate clean and say, "sorry, we screwed up but you are just going to have to suck it up for our past mistakes. And by the way we're not going to make any promises that we're going to do any better in the future."

We are a country built on immigrants. We want immigrants here. We just want the process to be fair, and safe while resprecting the current citizens of America.

I have been in this country since President Reagan was re-elected. I entered legally and acquired a PhD from a big University in this country with publication in top science journals. My children are citizens by birth, and despite everything my wife and I did to acquire legal status and make to good use all this education, there is nothing to show for. We entered legally and had been registered, fingerprinted, paying taxes, even paying vehicule insurance and whatever license or fees required including going to traffic school and paying fines and have absolutely no access to any benefits whatsoever. We are struggling with medical bills, and have to make it with meager wages. We are tired of running away, but we are trying to do what is best for our children. We still count ourselves as blessed and would not hesitate to give up what we have for miserable conditions from where we came from. We hope and pray that the American legislators will find it in their wisdom to make this a reality and end this cycle. God Bless.

Posted by: Nacer B. | May 20, 2007 3:55:18 PM

Correct:

Not: "We still count ourselves as blessed and would not hesitate to give up what we have for miserable conditions from where we came from"

Read: "We still count ourselves as blessed and would not hesitate to do it all over again for going back to the miserable conditions from where we came from"

I know you got the point, but want it to be clear.

It is pretty sad to read the comments of many people that you can tell by their names that they are also inmigrants, their ancesters came to the United States to get a better life, whether it was because of the Holocaust or because the poor living conditions of their contries, lets face it,the United States is a Diverse country and yes I agree that the people needs to learn the English language, but many of them had already learn it and it is impresionant when you see that they speak both languages when many of us still do not know how to speak our English language.
I bet it took a while for antecendants to learn the English language as well and some of them haven't learn it yet.

Mercedes,

If all of you demonstrated and activated in your own country the way the illegals do in the US, you could take over your own government for a better way of life in your own country.

The US will run out of resources. You've just admitted you are only here for the money, which is precisley why most illegals come.

Our country to you is only a money tree. That's why you don't respect us, our country, our way of life, or want to assimilate.

It's a bit more than that to us.

Change your own government or come here legally. You (illegals, no matter where they come from) are not the only people who want to come here. Your illegal actions are not fair to law abiding immigrant entrants.

Overall, American people respect our rule of law and order and we are generous and compassionate.

We do not appreciate thieves. The whole world, it seems, wants or needs something from America and we've been a constant source to help them.

I don't care what kind of sob story you have there are American citizens who need work, food, education, medical attention, etc that illegals are getting that our own countrymen need and can not access.

The audacity of a people who would steal into our country illegally, find every loophole they can for every provision they can rob, and then demand more special treatment?

new amnesty bill?
The Dream Act- illegals can pay instate tuition, but Americans cannot.

Go home.

American whites are predominantly xenophobic, and generally detest people from developing countries becoming US citizens. It's ironic that between the 15th & 18th centuries, white people from Europe (where the ancestors of most of America's white people came from) descended on every region of the world and colonized the local people, forcibly taking over their lands, and turning them into their own. They did this in Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, etc. What's infuriating about these white colonizers is that once they established a foothold at the expense of the native people, they erected barriers to restrict other people from coming in.
By the way, if we were to demand the identities of every one who has spoken against the Immigration Bill on this blog we would discover that they are mostly white people. Would you say that is an accident or a coincidence? NO! White people are manifestly racist and xenophobic.

By the way, not every illegal immigrant came from Mexico. In fact not every one even came in illegally. There are a few cases of people whose applications for visa extensions were bungled by the US Immigration. When the mistakes were discovered and were brought to Immigration's attention, Immigration only admitted to them, didn't even say "sorry" and just acted as if these foreigners were mere statistics on their graph chart. For instance, a guy I know had been given a 3-year visa extension by Immigration. 1 & a half years into that extension, Immigration discovered that they had issued the extension in error, and wrote back to cancel it. This immediately put he and his family in automatic illegal status, since they couldn't just get up the next day without elaborate preparation and return to their country. Now, these are some of the people who are counted among America's so-called 12 million illegals. My advice to you is to desist from over-generalizations of how the illegals came into the country.
