FIDEL'S EXCLUSIVA
June 06, 2007 1:30 PM
A healthier looking Fidel Castro appeared on Cuban TV yesterday speaking slowly about the past rather than his recovery and the future. It was the first interview since he underwent surgery last July for what is now widely believed to be diverticulitis, an intestinal condition that can lead to fatal bleeding.
I remember when in the Fall of 2006 reports from US intelligence and countless talking heads promised that Castro would not live to see the new year, but now half way into 2007 Fidel has proven them wrong. It was in the Fall of 2006 when I spoke to several journalists about coming on Exclusiva for a fast-paced "True or False" segment about Cuba. The segment required me to ask a question, for example, "Is Fidel Castro on his death bed?" The invited journalist would answer "true" or "false" and quickly give an explanation. I thought the answer to that question, even back then, was "false" no one really knows the state of Fidel Castro's health. But the journalists I spoke to at that time, many here at ABC, felt that was incorrect. They assured me he was dying and would not live to see the new year. Perhaps they meant 2008? Or 2015?
How well has US intelligence done reporting on Castro's health? What do you think?
