GOOOOOOL!! DEMOCRATS TRY TO WOO LATINOS WITH SOCCER

JULIA LA GRINGA- Though no hint of Hispanic heritage, she is a lover of everything Latin and is going to let you know about it. Here are her two cents on news in the Latino world.
With Latinos expected to make a bigger impact on the 2008 election than ever before, Democrats are on the hunt for Latino votes. They have hired Hispanic outreach consultants, created Spanish language websites, and participated in “charlas” with Latino Journalists (link)
And now, some candidates are taking their efforts to the fútbol field.
The Nevada State Democratic Party is sponsoring a new Soccer team they hope will help persuade Latinos to register and vote Democrat in the 2008 presidential election. They played their first game in Las Vegas last week (link)
The politics of the soccer match could not be ignored if you tried: The team name is “Las Democratas,” the uniform is-you guessed it-Blue, and the co-captain is Democratic Nevada State Assemblyman, Ruben Kihuen (who almost went pro in soccer before an ankle injury)
“Las Democratas” tied their Ligas Unidas opponent, “Los Escorpiones,” 1-1. But that didn’t deter Democratic Presidential Campaigners, who enthusiastically turned the stadium into a makeshift political rally, handing out registration forms and campaign fliers to soccer fans eligible to vote.
I’m not sure politics and soccer mix, but I guess it will be up to Nevada Latinos as to whether they appreciate this outreach or decide to issue Dems a red card in the primaries for this bizarre gimmick.
