Can 'Joe The Plumber' Swing His State to McCain?
October 23, 2008 7:55 AM
John McCain's campaign focus on Joe the Plumber has given him a way to carry his message that Obama would tax small business owners.
Republican campaign officials tell ABC News that they believe the "Joe the Plumber" argument is the best shot McCain has going into the final days of the election to target Barack Obama, who is leading McCain 54-43 in the latest ABC News/Washington Post daily tracking poll.
However Obama has hit back in recent days, arguing his plan to cut taxes for everyone making under $250,000 a year means that McCain is really advocating for "Joe the CEO" or "Joe the hedge fund manager."
So far, Obama is maintaining his lead over McCain going into this final campaign stretch on key economic criteria. On the question of who would better help the middle class, the ABC/Post poll found Obama leads McCain by 62-31 percent. Obama also has an 8 point lead over McCain on trust to handle taxes.
In the key swing states, McCain has eaten away somewhat at Obama's lead in Florida, but has fallen sharply in Ohio.
In Florida Obama is up 49 – 44 percent, compared to Obama's 51 – 43 percent lead on October 1.
In Joe the Plumber's home state of Ohio, Obama is up 52 – 38 percent, widening his 50 -42 percent lead over McCain in early October.
No Republican presidential candidate has ever won the White House without taking Ohio.
The Quinnipiac poll finds Obama is ahead in Pennsylvania 53 – 40 percent, compared to 54 – 39 percent last time. Pennsylvania is the one state won by Sen. John Kerry in 2004 that the McCain team hopes to flip.
They believe they are strong in the western part of the state and that their Joe the Plumber message will work with blue collar voters there. But so far, Obama is very strong in the eastern part of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, and the Philly suburbs.
These electorally vote-rich swing states are key.
If John McCain can't win two out of three of these swing states in Florida, Ohio, or Pennsylvania, there really isn't a path for him to get the 270 he needs to win the presidency.
Obama is ahead in all three right now.

Lets get off Gov. Palin and ask questions about Obama's qualifications.0
How much money did his house cost?
Why is his health plan in Illinios needing millions to bail it out because it isn't working.
How much money is the Democratic cuscus allowed to spend on a campaign? I thought there were limits.
Lets go the other direction and stop this discriminating against Palin.
I am joe the disabled Veteran.

Telling a friend that the love of his life is a phony and dangerous is not likely to get him to change his mind. But it may cost you a friend. It is much the same story with true believers in Barack Obama. They have made up their minds and not only don't want to be confused by the facts, they resent being told the facts. An e-mail from a reader mentioned trying to tell his sister why he was voting against Obama but, when he tried to argue some facts, she cut him short: "You don't like him and I do!" she said. End of discussion. When one thinks of all the men who have put their lives on the line in battle to defend and preserve this country, it is especially painful to think that there are people living in the safety and comfort of civilian life who cannot be bothered to find out the facts about candidates before voting to put the fate of this nation, and of generations yet to come, in the hands of someone chosen because they like his words or style. Of the four people running for president and vice president on the Republican and Democratic tickets, the one we know the least about is the one leading in the polls — Barack Obama. Some of Sen. Obama's most fervent supporters could not tell you what he has actually done on such issues as crime, education, or financial institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, much less what he plans to do to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear nation supplying nuclear weapons to the international terrorist networks that it has supplied with other weapons.
The magic word "change" makes specifics unnecessary. If things are going bad, some think that what is needed is blank-check "change." But history shows any number of countries in crises worse than ours, where "change" turned problems into catastrophes. In czarist Russia, for example, the economy was worse than ours is today and World War I was going far worse for the Russians than anything we have faced in Iraq. Moreover, Russians had nothing like the rights of Americans today. So they went for "change." That "change" brought on a totalitarian regime that made the czars' despotism look like child's play. The communists killed more people in one year than the czars killed in more than 90 years, not counting the millions who died in a government-created famine in the 1930s. Other despotic regimes in China, Cuba, and Iran were similarly replaced by people who promised "change" that turned out to be even worse than what went before. Yet, many today seem to assume that if things are bad, "change" will make them better. Specifics don't interest them nearly as much as inspiring rhetoric and a confident style. But many 20th century leaders with inspiring rhetoric and great self-confidence led their followers or their countries into utter disasters. These ranged from Jim Jones who led hundreds to their deaths in Jonestown to Hitler and Mao who led millions to their deaths. What specifics do we know about Barack Obama's track record that might give us some clue as to what kinds of "changes" to expect if he is elected?
We know that he opposed the practice of putting violent young felons on trial as adults. We know that he was against a law forbidding physicians to kill a baby that was born alive despite an attempt to abort it. We know that Obama opposed attempts to put stricter regulations on Fannie Mae — and that he was the second largest recipient of campaign contributions from Fannie Mae. We know that this very year his campaign sought the advice of disgraced former Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines. Fannie Mae and Raines were at the heart of "the mess in Washington" that Barack Obama claims he is going to clean up under the banner of "change." The public has been told very little about what this man with the wonderful rhetoric has actually done. What we knows enough to make us wonder about what we don't know. Or it ought to. For the true believers — which includes many in the media — it is just a question of whether you like him or not.

Whatever you want to belive.......
You said yourself "Clinton signed the Bill" !
DUH.................
Posted by: RSC | Oct 23, 2008 8:57:23 AM
fed up; You are correct as far as you went. But since Phil Gramm led the charge that Bill Clinton signed, since 1999, the regulatory oversight was kept at bay by bribing the likes of Frank, Schumer, and Dodd. And most recently in the last 2-3 years, Obama.

We the people....
HOw would you vote today if JOhn McCain was black and Barrack Obama was White?
I never thought the day would come were we the people vote because the color of a mans skin, Martin Luther King always said don't look at the color of my skin but the character of the man.
If that is what he believed in then we as people have failed him and his dream

RSC - I didn't realize that Pennsylvania, where I live, was on "the left coast".
See, your ignorant assumption once again demonstrates how you foolish Republicans get things based on your ignorant prejudices and ideological blind spots.
You Republicans really are a bunch of stupid loudmouths, aren't you?
This is why you are going to be buried in an electoral landslide in November.
Nobody wants to be pushed around by uneducated morons anymore.

Why is the guy worried about the $250,000 benchmark. He is making no where near that figure and he will benefit from Obama plan, but this idiot is backing McCain. Even if by some miracle he does open a plumbing business, he still won't be anywhere near that figure anyway. This guy was a McCain plant from the start.
Posted by: gapeach777 | Oct 23, 2008 9:02:32 AM
LongT - complete crap. Remember that Republicans controlled Congress between '99 and January 2007 - if they wanted to re-impose regulatory controls on credit speculation, they had plenty of time to do it. But everybody knows that the GOP has been preaching a radical deregulatory gospel for 30 years. Nobody is buying your crap, dude. Nice try.

If you need Joe "I'm not a plumber, but I play one on T.V.," to make your case, you're in bad shape. Obama should win in a landslide with every poll but the flawed AP poll putting him 8-10 points ahead. But, Pennsylvania will be the new Ohio/Florida with the McCain Campaign plotting to steal the vote as we speak. Here's how it will breakdown: Florida will go Red, so will Va., NC and Mo despite recent polls. But Ohio will go blue leaving Penn as the gamebreaker. Guess who squeaks it out miraculously. Bradley effect will be trumpeted by the media with no questions about the paperless voting machines. You heard it hear first folks, President McCain wins by a closet racist hair. Look for yourself as the fix is in. God help us all. Democrats better find their backbones!

Mark Garnett...honey if you can't say what you need to say in one paragraph, don't expect anyone to read it. I believe that the more one says, the less they have to say. In your case, that's 1000% true.
Posted by: FranklyMyDear | Oct 23, 2008 9:04:33 AM
Why is McCain focused on Joe the Plumber? Joe's problem isn't anything like McCain's claiming it to be....
I think this argument will only sell to the bottom halfers of the electorate that aren't smart enough to understand the Joe would really be better off under Obama.

fed up; since you've chosen to get personal with people, I'll tell you my view concerning most democrats. I believe they mean well, but they're naive bordering on stupid.

Michelle Obama had a salary of $316,962 as a VP of External Affairs at the not-for-profit University of Chicago Hospital....along with 16 other VP's...about 5 Million in executive salaries....I can see why it was not for profit!! This maybe why we have such excessively high healthcare costs! Obama is not the answer...his own wife is part of the problem...
Atleast it looks like the media has quenched a bit of their bloodthirsty attack on Palin...please cover issues that matter to the American people like the economy or healthcare instead of stupid partisan stuff on wardrobe!!

Our Constitution is at risk. Where is the MEDIA???Obama has been asked by the courts to prove his eligibility to be President by providing proof of citizenship. Mr. Berg is a lawyer and a Democrat. As of yesterday neither Obama nor the DNC has provided evidence and over the past month has filed motion after motion to dismiss this lawsuit filed in Philadelphia PA. Why not just produce the proof and end the mystery? Follow the link and read the actual court filed documentshttp://docs.justia.com/cases/federal/district-courts/pennsylvania/paedce/2:2008cv04083/281573/27/ This is latest document posted out of 27 filed. Here is a link to all of them.http://dockets.justia.com/docket/court-paedce/case_no-2:2008cv04083/case_id-281573/ If Obama is elected and it is later discovered that he is not a citizen then the Constitution is useless. Joe the Plumber will only work with those people who don't understand how the graduated tax system the U.S. uses works or someone who does understand how it works and has a taxable gross well over $250,000. At this point, I'm waiting for the election, the whining and name calling to be over. And I'm still waiting to learn where Palin's wardrobe is going after the election so I can buy it.
Posted by: Catherine | Oct 23, 2008 9:09:30 AM
fed up; You know I am correct. Frank was the chairman of the Banking Finance Committee. Frank has received campaign contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—$42,350 between 1989 and 2008–which some critics claim have influenced his support of their lending programs. Frank's former partner, Herb Moses, was an executive at Fannie Mae from 1991 to 1998, where he helped develop many of Fannie Mae’s affordable housing and home improvement lending programs. The relationship ended around the same time Moses left the company; Frank's support of Fannie and Freddy predated and continued past that relationship. Nice try dude!

RSC - are you really that stupid? Do you even know how our government works? Presidents sign plenty of Bills they don't necessary like or agree with - especially when Congress is controlled by the opposing party. Did you not see whose name was on that Bill?
You are the epitome of a "low information voter" - another loud, stupid, Republican mouthbreather who repeats whatever stupid nonsense he is fed by the party bosses without bothering to fact check or even understand what he's talking about.
Do you really think that decent people are going to put up with your crap any longer? You still don't get what this election is about, do you? This election isn't about Obama or McCain or even Bush. This election is about people like YOU. This election is a national referendum on stupidity. This election is about those of us who are smart, decent, hardworking, competent and who play by the rules and expect our leaders to as well - it's about US standing up to the ignorant, incompetent, arrogant, morons like YOU and saying "ENOUGH!" You dumb jerks don't get to run things anymore. You had your chance and you BLEW IT! We will no longer accept excuses for your stupidity and failure. We will no longer let you loudmouths bully and push around the rest of us. We are going to stand up to you and force you back under whatever holes you came from and we are going to keep things that way for a long, long time.
Get used to it, dummy. Your time is up.

I am tired of this racist election. Stick to the facts. Obama loves all people. He is a repensitation of the unity of people. In love, not race. I think the racist of this country hate him more because he is of mix race. How can he hate white people? He is half white. He would have to hate himself. He is not the next black president. He is a MAN. STICK TO THE FACTS NOT THE LIES. If you are a regular working class person. Vote for Obama. Stop making the rich, richer!

RSC: Senator John McCain’s campaign manager was paid more than $30,000 a month for five years ($2 MILLION) as president of an advocacy group set up by the mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to defend them against stricter regulations. What say you?

To : FranklyMyDear,
Maybe you can read this and then comment with your opinion, it is NOT from anyone at FOX or anyone within the Republican media, it is from a hard core, long proven Democrate reporter, just Google his name for the proof.
The Article is called:
Would the Last Honest Reporter Please Turn On the Lights?
http://www.ldsmag.com/ideas/081017light.html
*** I wonder how many Democrates will actualy care what one of thier owns states in his opinion piece ??? Do you even care anymore to read an un-biased reporter doing his JOB...
Posted by: Mark Garnett | Oct 23, 2008 9:13:41 AM
LongT - how do those irrelevancies make your silly assertion "correct"? Do you have proof of any wrongdoing on Frank or Moses' part? If not then your allegations are false. Meanwhile, the GOP controlled Congress. If they wanted to do something about it, they had the votes and the means to do so. Nice try, dude. Nobody is buying your crap.
Posted by: fed up with dummies | Oct 23, 2008 9:14:17 AM
Mark Garnett: I read your article. I've read many like it, actually. I am an Independent, an Obama supporter and know that it was Jimmy Carter that signed the first bill that opened up the possibility for people that do not have the conventional 20% down for a mortgage, cold get mortgages. And to your dismay, MANY people that got these loans were able to pay them. Surprise to you, I'm sure. It was Bill Clinton that ammended the bill to focus on inner city residents. BUT, the bottom line is, the LENDERS are the ones that are shameful. They are the ones that tell you that you qualify for a $300,000 loan on a $40,000 annual salary. They make you think it's going to work out and when it doesn't, they already collected their commission. So please, STOP blaiming Democrats and politicians. They tried to open doors for many people that without them, would not be where they are today. Lenders took advantage of a situation that should have been kept under better control. ARM loans are the #1 reason for the housing crisis today. 5 years ago when my boss did a tv segment on 20/20 about the housing bubble bursting, he told America that ARM loans were bad news, if you needed one because you coulnd't afford the payment otherwise to run the opposite direction. Do you think the peopel listened to the head of a large real estate firm or their joe schmoe lender??? When person a cannot make their mortgage payment and they must sell their house as quick as possible to the lowest bidder, now the rest of the neighborhood must followsuit or they will never sell their homes. It's a trickel down affect and it's unfortunate. Obama is not being paid by Fannie or Freddie. recieing contributions, well, perhaps their accounting department should have told them they coudl not afford those type of contributions!!

Nobody gives a crap what you think, dude. Go "debate" yourself with some K-Y and a box of tissues.
