Can McCain Pull Off a McKinley?

October 30, 2008 8:21 PM

Ap_mccain9_080904_main

For the McCain campaign, the GDP numbers out this morning had to hurt.
The last time we saw personal consumption expenditures go down was 1991.

The US economy is shrinking and is -- by most accounts -- in recession.

This year, the obstacles for the incumbent party are great.
We've seen the financial crisis hit, job losses nearly every month this year, and now this GDP number.

The last time the incumbent party held office in the face of a recession, or on the heels of one, was in 1900 with Republican candidate William McKinley.

Can John McCain pull off a McKinley?

For the good of America, I hope not.

Why doesn't anyone ask John McCain about his apparent dishonesty in calling Barack Obama a socialist about 300 times?

Last night McCain admitted that Obama is not a socialist, though of course he doesn't like Obama's idea of rolling back the Bush tax cuts for those making over $250,000.

But the point is that McCain is dishonest in using this inflamatory label and he should be held accountable.

On a related note, why doesn't anyone ask John McCain if he is willing today to call for the end to Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance and all other government programs that redistribute wealth?

I mean, come on. If the man is a hypocrite, the press has to call him on it!

John McCain could have won the election had he picked a sensible VP candidate. With Romney or Pawlenty, I really think he would have won.

When you read about Palin being the future of the Republican Party, you really have to wonder what they are thinking, or smoking. She has to be the most incompetent and polarizing figure on the political stage today.

I howl with laughter when I hear the kool-aid Righties proclaim her the future of the GOP. The smart Conservatives (and there are many) will have to purge this Palin/Bachmann type Republican if they wish to be the majority party again.

The best strategy the "conservatives" of radio set in motion (a strategy later adopted by the McCain/Palin camp) was the one where they got all their followers to call Obama "the messiah". They have no idea how many Christians, Muslims, Jews, and people holding other religious faiths were offended by their blasphemy and blatent disdain for others' right to religion.

We're all Americans.

Obama/Biden 08!

Stop drinking that "change" kool-aid John.

Posted by: vf | Oct 30, 2008 8:46:16 PM

Could Sarah Palin please promise us she will read a book that explains the three branches of government before she runs for national office again.

And maybe take a course in economics too, so that she can understand that increasing the world's oil production one half of 1% is not going to change the world price of crude by any noticable amount.

McCain and the RNC are getting desperate now. Now sending out robo-calls about Rezko!? I guess the kitchen sink has been thrown. They are going to say and do anything to slander Obama and try to take the race from him. Hold your ground all you Dems!!!!!!

vf ,

Thanks for joining us! Do you have the courage to answer a couple questions?

1. Did John McCain say last night on the Larry King show that Barack Obama is not a socialist?
2. Does that mean Mr. McCain was being dishonest when he said that HE BELIEVED that Obama was a socialist in previous speeches?
3. Do you think that being dishonest, indeed bearing false witness, about another American represents your values as an American?

Posted by: John | Oct 30, 2008 8:52:16 PM

Know this is completely off point...but where are Palin's medical records...sick and tired of the double standards...Obama/Biden have to give a pint of blood and McCain gives a time limit to review his medical files and Palin (ooops...) they don't appear.

Tired of the media not taking them to task...for goodness sake, it DOES matter...

vf,
I hope you are still with us!

Is John McCain willing today to call for the end to Social Security, Medicare and all other government programs that redistribute wealth?

Is John McCain, by his own definition, a socialist?

Do you believe, as an American, that if John McCain is a socialist, he should step forward with that information so that we can use this to judge his worthiness for the office he seeks, before the election?

Poor John.

Finally gets a spot on the pro tour and ends up playing against Tiger Woods.

POOR OLD DUFFER.

I guess that vf had to run before responding to some simple questions.

Ok, I'll ask something else.

Intentional pay discrimination is illegal. That is a fact.

Does anyone here think it justice that women should be denied the right to sue if they find out they have been intentionally discriminated against for 30 years, ON THE GROUNDS that she didn't file in court after her first pay check?

The case I am talking about is Lilly Ledbetter v Goodyear Tire and Rubber.

Lilly Ledbetter found out she was discriminated against. She proved it in court. She proved it was intentional. (Emails left no doubt.) But she didn't FIND OUT until she worked at Goodyear for 30 years.

The reason the right wing Supreme Court threw her case out, AFTER SHE HAD WON? She should have filed when she received the first pay check.

OF COURSE SHE HAD NO EVIDENCE that she was discriminated against until the list of salaries was slipped to her after she had worked there for 30 years.

Is that justice? Or is it simply indecent?

FACT: John McCain opposed the legislation that would have repaired this injustice, not only for Lilly Ledbetter, but for ALL WOMEN.

Such a classy guy!

scooterfoot:
Obama didn't release anything but a typed page from his doctor stating that he is ok. Biden and McCain showed actual records. I think Palin should say she will release her records when Obama releases his.

Well John.....the robo-call people don't answer simple questions because they don't have any answers! They just leave their hit/run diatribe. That is why they are losing this election. hang in there......Tuesday is around the corner!!

"Uh Yah, Osama, this is John. Uh, could you uh like make some kind of threat against America or something? No one will vote for me unless you tell them to be afraid of Barack. I know your probably dead, but can't SOMEONE make a tape or something? Our guys will verify it. So, uh, call me on my cell ok? This is John McCain and I approve this message"

Posted by: The last hope | Oct 30, 2008 9:21:49 PM

If Dante's description of hell were rewritten John McCain and those who made his robo call campaign would get to listen to their message for eternity.

'Twas the night before elections
And all through the town
Tempers were flaring
Emotions all up and down!

I, in my bathrobe
With a cat in my lap
Had cut off the TV
Tired of political crap.

When all of a sudden
There arose such a noise
I peered out of my window
Saw Obama and his boys

They had come for my wallet
They wanted my pay
To give to the others
Who had not worked a day!

He snatched up my money
And quick as a wink
Jumped back on his bandwagon
As I gagged from the stink

He then rallied his henchmen
Who were pulling his cart
I could tell they were out
To tear my country apart!

" On Fannie, on Freddie,
On Biden and Ayers!
On Acorn, On Pelosi"
He screamed at the pairs!

They took off for his cause
And as he flew out of sight
I heard him laugh at the nation
Who wouldn't stand up and fight!

So I leave you to think
On this one final note-
IF YOU DONT WANT SOCIALISM
GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

SARAH! SARAH! SARAH! SARAH!

I HOPE YOU DON'T STOP DRIVE THE CRAZY.

John McCain is 72 years old.
In your family you likely have someone near that age. Would you trust that person with your 401K? Would you want that person to run your schools? Would you want that person to give direction to the police department? Would you want that person visit you everyday?
Do you really think someone who is old like John McCain, can change with the times and make your life better?

Posted by: doug | Oct 30, 2008 9:43:49 PM

Didn't John McCain go to school with McKinley?

HE'S THAT OLD.

Posted by: Ed from MA | Oct 30, 2008 9:49:02 PM

Well let's say he does a McKinley, and get's shot.

That leaves us with Mrs. Palin in charge of 10 Nimitz nuclear carrier groups.

I'd rather be para salin' that have Sarah Palin.

I keep seeing that the Republicans keep brining up Obama's full name. I guess because it's different. So I can only surmise that the Republicans think that names of Polish, Czech, German, Jewish, Puerto Rican, Japanese or Chinese descent are "differnt" because those names are not the typical Smith or Jones. I guess the Repubs think a person with a different sounding name has no business assuming they are good enough to run for the highest office in our country. Just a reminder to the Rebublicans that it's those people with the odd sounding names that came to this counrty in the early 1900's and worked their butts off in the coal mines or steel mills to help build this counrty into the great nation that is America. How dare you look down your noses at those of us whose names just happen to be a little different than let's say Smith or Jones.

The economy is crappy and still McCain and Palin want to spend their time with attacks even they don't believe. Ridiculous

Where are Sarah Palin's Health Records

My Friends, I'm truly sorry for what I have become. The maverick I was when I ran in 2000 would denounce my campaign tactics in 2008.

You have to understand that my unraveling and incoherent campaign is largely not my fault, but the fault of Republican operatives formerly of the Bush camp.

They made me pick Palin when I wanted to pick Joe (Lieberman) or Tom (Ridge). They told me to embrace the negative smears on my opponent that I once aggressively denounced when they were instigated against me.

I apologize for what I let them do. It wasn't completely me. They told me what to do and I went with it.

I do have to say the McCain of 2000 would cast a vote for Barack Obama, not the sorry Bush clone of McCain 2008. Thank you my friends.
