Don't Bet on Lame-Duck Stimulus Package

October 21, 2008 2:46 PM

Despite the encouraging words yesterday from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and the White House for a new economic stimulus package  -- it's not going to happen this year.

Congressional sources say that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will not accept the likely White House price for approving a stimulus bill -- passage of the Colombia Free Trade Agreement.

Obama allies want to save the package -- especially accelerated tax cuts and new infrastructure investment -- for his signature in January.   Senate Republicans will still have the votes they need to filibuster the kind of expansive legislation -- $150-300 billion -- that Democrats have discussed.

All that adds up to more gridlock during the lame duck.

I wouldn't count to much on Republicans holding on to enough seats for a filibuster. I just voted Dem. for the first time and I'm 52, I voted for O'bama and whatever Dem Congressman ran against Adam Putnam. I still voted Republican for State and county.

Ex Republican

I love how this is all a game to those WE elected into office. I've never voted a straight ticket and this year will be no different. I have spent more time researching state and even local level elections to be as informed as possible. I don't care if for whom you vote, just research them all and make sure you are supporting the person YOU believe has your best interest in mind. We all know, once those elected get a taste of the Washington life those of us at home matter little!

This just in ... Joy Behar is a big fat disgusting POS and Whoopi looks like a black Grinch!

i live in an area with quite a few republicans and well off individuals who almost always vote lockstep with the republican ticket.

this year however, many of those homes and businesses ,of people who i know are staunch republicans , have obama signs on their yards. that sight was unthinkable 8 years ago.

apparently many republicans here
have abandoned the party in droves for this election ,and are voting for country ahead of party ,as they should.

i really think the republicans have shot themselves in the foot this time ,rather monumentally at that.

this republican party meltdown ,including the racist tinged election campaign they have been/are waging will leave an ugly scar on the party itself that wont heal for a long time,if ever.

good riddance to bad rubbish i say...

VOTE NO ENCUMBENT!!!!!!!!
Split ticket vote and DO NOT vote for ANYONE who is currently seaking re-election to anything!!!!!!

Posted by: DobermanSpencer | Oct 21, 2008 3:47:39 PM

Fine, we do not need another economic stimulus package. Let's give more money to those who do not deserve it.

Posted by: No more stimulus packages | Oct 21, 2008 3:49:09 PM

Socialism on the way. Let's tax more rich people and give another $300B away to people who don't even pay taxes. That we can prevent the rich people from spending their own money and creating jobs. The entire thing just makes me ill.

I hope everybody is taking notes. Both sides are playing games with our economy and our tax dollars. I wish Americans had the courage to vote out the incumbents and continue to do so until they remember that they're in Washington to do what's right and not merely to get re-elected. Unfortunately too many are lemmings who keep voting for the same corrupt politicians they've always voted for. The Congress wasn't supposed to be a career!!!

FLAW IN OBAMA CAMPAIGN: How can Senator Obama say that he will listen and take advice from Secretary of State Colin Powell when on the most important issue -- Attacking Iraq -- Powell went before the United Nations and supported President Bush, and Obama was against attacking Iraq? You don't present the case that this is an important endorsement when you don't take the advice on the most critical issue of the decade. Oh yes, the economy is really the most important issue now, but neither Obama or Powell have economic experience, except Obama has said that he will spread the wealth around, Marist-Socialist style. The last thing America needs is having an ACORN type crowd take over the White House to spread the wealth. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

I VOTED DEMOCRAT TODAY !!! ALL THE WAY. WE NEED CHANGE AND OF THE TWO . OBAMA IS THE BEST MAN...

Posted by: Coy | Oct 21, 2008 3:54:03 PM

People think what you are doing when you vote for Obama. He is a Socialist and guaranteed, will implement huge government entitlement programs in order to enslave millions of people and buy their vote. This is about power.. nothing else. Obama is trying to create a socialist country and you will see it by next spring. He announce that he will raise everybody's taxes and he is really sorry he misled everybody during the election..

For the first time in my 63 years, I have never seen the people so active in an election. Congratulations and keep the momentum going in the generations to come. We have and can make a difference. Thanks to each of you who are looking at the issues and voting according to what they are learning about the candidates.

Get ready to have the FCC come down and try to close certain news & radio stations after Obama is elected......Get ready gun owners to have your gun rights taken away...remember the DC ruling...people can't own guns in DC area.....its is just the Beginning of the "CHANGE".....If Obama can't & won't sing the National Anthem because of the words because they are too offensive...with the bombs bursting in air, ....etc.. and he said "The Flag (American flag to you igmo's out there) is a SYMBOL of OPPRESSION....So get ready for a new flag...like the one on the tail of his airplane and a new National Anthem.......

Marcus & Jack in the box:
May God forgive you your hatefulness and unkind words. I supposed both of you are real good looking, great, decent hunks, ah?? I'd love to see what you both look like. Probably not too great if you have to put other fellow human beings down!! I will pray for you both...

Brian -- I really don't believe that America will vote for Senator Obama on Nov 4th because they are getting the message that Obama is to Socialism as ACORN is to Corruption. Too many anti-American concepts supported by Senator Obama floating around. Now we know why he has the most liberal voting record in Washington as a Senator. No American wants a White House that will dip into their pockets. Hang onto your wallets until Nov 4th. Once McCain is elected in an "upset", we can all breath easier and the freeloaders will have to plan on working for a living instead of getting the wealth spread around to them by Obama.

To all the Chicken Littles who are running around in a panic shouting, "The Socialist President is coming!" -- please, relax. A US president has very specific, but very limited, powers. No president can create new laws. A president can only suggest new legislative policies. It will take a majority vote among 100 US senators and 435 representatives to pass new legislation. Unless the majority of our Congress is suddenly swept with socialism fever, you won't see radical changes in US policy -- tax laws or any other. Keep in mind that approximately half of our congress is republican and two-thirds of our senate remains the same over each election period. Our founding fathers designed our government to be deliberative and stable, not to be a sailboat that gets blown in a completely different direction after each election.

Posted by: amigan | Oct 21, 2008 4:02:13 PM

Judy -- This election will determine whether we have free and honest elections in the future or whether the "Obama Administration" will manipulate the press and media, along with a veto-proof Democrat Congress to pass laws that will turn this country into a "socialist republic" that will no longer defend freedom abroad and at home. Remember what Ben Franklin answered when he was asked what our founders had given us when our country was founded: "A Republic if you can keep it!"

News Flash....Were already a socialist country. 700 billion+ for Wall Street, S.S., Medicare, Medicaid, Education,Federal Reserve, IRS, Forgien Aid, etc, etc, etc.

Ex Republican

As usual, the Republicans aren't interested in helping the American middle class unless there is something in it for them.

An all you Fox News watchers, why don't you turn the channel and see what the rest of the world is talking about?? McCain is a horrible candidate who will do nothing but continue Bush's FAILED tax policies. If Dems are socialists for the middle class, then Bush and McCain are socialists for the rich. The rich pay little to NO taxes and the middle class pays them all. How is this fair? Oh I see; tax cuts for the rich is "conservatism", but tax cuts for the middle class is "socialism". And newsflash: THE ECONOMY SUCKS UNDER BUSH AND WOULD UNDER MCCAIN! The economy does better when the rich pay a little more. Want proof? LOOK AT THE 1990'S AND THERE YOU HAVE IT.
