Let's Go to Weekend Voting
October 24, 2008 9:58 AM
One third of likely voters say they'll vote early, nearly double what it was eight years ago.
But we don't yet know whether the surge in early voting is simply capturing people who are going to vote anyway or actually expanding the electorate.
In their New York Times op-ed today, Rep. Steve Israel, D-NY, and Norm Ornstein, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, call for weekend voting to increase the country's voter turnout rate.
They argue Tuesday voting has depressed voter turnout rates in the US, and unfairly penalizes low-income voters who often choose between having to work and voting.
Israel is sponsoring a bill in the House of Representatives to scrap Tuesday voting and move to weekend voting on the first Saturday and Sunday after the first Friday in November.
I think Israel and Ornstein raise an important point here. Let's go to weekend voting.

Weekend voting has its attractions I suppose, but then there are the people for whom it will be too much of a bother or interfer with their plans. I know my Saturdays and Sundays are packed to the max the way things are- finding time to vote on one of those days too might be just too much. What the congress could do is declare a full 24 (or 36 or 48) hour voting period for the entire country. That way the polls would close at the exact same time everywhere and more people would be encouraged to vote because their vote might have some effect.

I think weekend voting is a great idea. We should continue to have early voting but it should be expanded to 12 hours per day. Here is Florida, the Republican legislature changed our laws to suppress turnout. Early voting was decreased to 8 hours per day rather than 12, and weekend voting hours were reduced. This is just another example of the Voter Suppression tactics of the Republicans. I am so excited to vote for Barack Obama.

Weekend voting is a no-brainer... unless you happen to have a vested interest in keeping turnout low, particularly amongst people with long working hours, multiple jobs, no vehicle, and/or other obstacles to getting to the polls.
If your campaign depends in part on demonizing the poor, that's a very strong vested interest to keep them as disenfranchised as possible.

"...there are the people for whom it will be too much of a bother or interfere with their plans."
If exercising your right to vote, a right for which people in the past have shed blood and died, is "too much of a bother" you don't deserve the right to vote. Weekend voting is an excellent idea; I think it would definitely increase turnout.

I do not think they live where I live. Look we work 24/7 anymore. Not everyone has Sat. Sun. off. Some work different shifts during polling hours. Some have to travel, without notice.
Plain and simple early voting is the answer.

"If exercising your right to vote, a right for which people in the past have shed blood and died, is "too much of a bother" you don't deserve the right to vote." BMS, then people like you and Obama supporters have no right to complain if you can't make it to early voting days.

Lil - enough already. We aren't buying your b.s. Give it up, will you?
And to get back to the actual subject of this article, weekend voting is an excellent idea. Anyone who cannot find an hour to vote on a weekend once every 4 years, has a serious organizational problem in their life, and as someone else said, doesn't deserve the right to vote, for which many people have shed their blood and lost their lives.

Because of the numbers voting, I feel it should be a 4 day event. Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday

Gosh you mean the US could finally catch up with the rest of the world when it comes to voting? I say GREAT! Tuesdays suppresses the vote.

There are people who work weekends.
Early voting - for the three weeks prior to any election.
Voting Centers - in high traffic shopping areas - or common areas in town. (See Colorado).
Mail in voting for all rural and elderly voters.

I absolutely agree. I travel for work so it's going to be very difficult for me to drive back and get in to the polling booths on time.
It's such a headache having it on Tuesday.
Who's "genius" idea was that?
Regardless, let's go to weekend voting. Please.

A change in voting logistics is indeed long overdue. For further and extensive discussion of how to go about that, for opinion and archiving of the current primary and national elections process, and for an activist example of a voter empowerment initiative for young people, go to Why Tuesday.org and The Ultimate College Bowl.org

I think all voting should be by mail ballot.
The voter picks up their mail in/drop off ballot at certain locations (if all registration noted properly) up to 1 month before election day, then mails them in by midnight election day.
Like tax returns can be mailed in by April 15 midnight.
