McCain's Three Closing Arguments

October 24, 2008 10:37 AM

Mccaincampaignrally John McCain will be making three closing arguments in the homestretch of his campaign, a senior Republican campaign strategist tells ABC News.

#1 -- Joe The Plumber: McCain will attempt to hammer home his message that Barack Obama's tax plan would hurt small business owners and is an attempt to "share the wealth" and smacks of socialism.

#2 -- Obama Untested: The McCain campaign will be taking advantage of what was a gaffe this week by Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden who said earlier this week that the world would "test" a  new young President Obama.  The McCain campaign will capitalize on Biden's comment to argue Obama isn't ready to be Commander-in-Chief.

#3 -- Democrats "United":  The McCain campaign will argue the nation needs a McCain administration to check a Congress led by Democrats House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Already Republican are running television ads in places like North Carolina where Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole is fighting against Democratic challenger, state Sen. Kay Hagan to hold onto her seat.

Watch for Republicans to raise the specter of a Obama-Pelosi-Reid administration that is not going to be checked by a Republican Congress.

#1 - This "Joe the Plumber" schtick has just about played itself out. Sick of hearing about this nonsense. I'll bet Joe himself is sick of it, too. McCain is started to sound like an addled old fool.

#2 - All new Presidents get tested in one way or another. Doesn't mean McCain wouldn't get "tested". Just a heck of a lot scarier thought as to how he would react!!

#3 - Yes, a Democrat controlled Congress and President. Sounds good to me. Maybe then we could get something postitive accomplished for America instead of the jockeying for position and power grab we have to put up with when the Rethugs are in control of Congress and won't let the Dems. pass anything of worth to help this Country, cause only the "thug's" want to get all the credit.

They are beating this 'Joe the Plumber' thing to death, aren't they? At a certain point it comes across as desperate doesn't it? I guess they don't have a choice...

Attacks Attacks Attacks! That's all McCain can do. Shame on him!

Posted by: leighg1 | Oct 24, 2008 10:59:30 AM

My question is, how does being shot down, being held prisoner, and being tortured, which is a test of one's character to survive, equate to being tested to handle national and international problems? I don't see how the scars McCain says prove he is tested show that he is ready to make decisions on how to handle a rogue nation starting up nuclear weapon plants. The only people in the U.S. who can whether they have passed the tests to handle those situations are past presidents.

Posted by: Mack | Oct 24, 2008 11:00:28 AM

I think they are *planning* to close with 3 arguments. But none of their plans have survived contact with reality.

By this time next week they will have introduced 2 new narratives, minimum.

yep, that'll work ol' man.

1) Joe the Plumber has been unmasked as Joe the Phoney. McCain could care less for plumbers; he's looking out for Joe the Investment Banker and Joe the Offshoring Specialist and the other less-than-5% who will see their taxes skyrocket to the socialist levels they suffered under Chairman Reagan. Oh, the humanity!

2) There will likely be an event during the next four years that will "test" the President. If that test is a crisis of the magnitude of, oh say, Hurricane Katrina, I have a good idea of which candidate I can trust to respond in an efficient, level-headed manner... and which might just write off the victims as "unreal" Americans.

3) Funny that the Pugs never saw any problem when they controlled Executive and Legislative and made big gains on Judicial as well. When the shoe's on the other foot, suddenly it's an issue? Fuggitaboutit.

The McCain campaign is just pathetic at this point. Although I am a Democrat I do remember a time when Republicans had credibility. And it just gets stranger and stranger. The young woman in Pittsburgh who was allegedly attacked? Why is the "B" carved backward as if it were done in the mirror. This from Politico:

" Skepticism in Pittsburgh

The police are skeptical:

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

Joe The Plumber Might I suggest some "Roto Rooter" or perhaps "Draino". Maybe even some "Ex Lax" to rid McCain of this issue.

That's about the size of it. These are all facts, no attacks, no "smears".

If you want a young, inexperienced President with an economic policy rooted in marxist / socialist principles working with an unchecked liberal congress with a 12% approval rating in a post 9/11 world, BO is your man.

I would also add to the closing argument that this man has no record to back up any of his rhetoric so electing him is a complete leap of faith. He may keep his promises he may not - no way to know - campaign finance.

On taxes his limited record shows that he has never voted to cut taxes for anyone. His 95% talking point is pure hogwash since far less than that number actually pay taxes. He was rated the #1 most liberal Senator in congress.

My two most important issues are national security and the econcomy in that order.

On national security his own VP nominee admits electing him is an invitation to our enemies to "test his mettle." If he gets elected and Russia does something provactive lets all hope his "mettle" doesn't involve setting up moral equivalencies or saying let the UN security council that Russia controls veto power on handle it.

On the economy, his anti-trade policies and punitive corporate taxes will drive businesses out of the US further harming main street and wall street. Add in a nationalized healthcare regime and out of control government spending and watch what happens.

"Gird your loins!"

The so-called liberal media haven't asked any tough questions of Palin in this campaign. The woman who is indignant of "pallin around with terrorists" is married to someone who until recently was a follower of Joe Vogler. Vogler, the founder of the Alaska Independence Party, is infamous for saying "the fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government. And I won't be buried under their damn flag." Who does Palin pal around with, when she isn't claiming that her children should be compensated for their travel on official state business, or using RNC money to buy Louis Vuitton bags for her daughters?

Posted by: Firtest | Oct 24, 2008 11:23:06 AM

Posted by: Sarah | Oct 24, 2008 11:27:25 AM

Seriously?

1) Joe the Plumber is a myth, a guy who is not a plumber, had no plans to buy the business he claimed to want to buy, and admits himself that he would get an Obama tax break. This is an attack?

2) Obama is untested: Four words: Skin cancer Sarah Palin.

3) Democrats united: he may think that's a bad idea, but polls throughout the country show that Americans want a Democratic Congress and blame the Republicans for the current crappy state of Congress. They are also aware, before McCain tells them, that Obama is also a Democrat.

Posted by: Noonan | Oct 24, 2008 11:28:01 AM

If you want an experienced, veteran President with an economic policy rooted in conservative principles working to keep in check a liberal congress with a 12% approval rating in a post 9/11 world, John McCain is your man.

McCain has a long record to back up his rhetoric so electing him is no leap of faith. He will keep his promises and his long bipartisan record proves it.

On taxes McCain has vowed to extend the Bush tax cuts . He has vowed not to increase corporate taxes that are already among the highest in the developed world.

He has a long bipartisan record and in 2005 co-sponsored bill S190 which sought to tighten the regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Had this legislation not been killed by the Democrats in the Senate Banking Comittee the damage we see today to our economy would have been mitigated.

My two most important issues are national security and the econcomy in that order.

On national security McCain is a tested veteran who has vowed to stay on offense against our enemies. Despite Colin Powell he has the endorsement of 4 previous Secretaries of State and many respected Admirals and Generals. He was right on Russia / Georgia and he was right about the troop surge.

On the economy, his pro-trade policies and corporate tax policy will keep US businesses growing, helping main street and wall street. He has vowed to reform government spending and cut unnecessary programs and pork.

Why is there even a debate?

Posted by: steve | Oct 24, 2008 11:40:16 AM

Steve you need to get a grip on it -- you explained why you won't vote for Obama -- Why no description of why you will vote for McCain.

Your guy is worse than my guy just won't cut it anymore. If you want to get Obama supporters to change their minds, you need to give them some reasons to vote for your guy.

Over the past month, all I have seen from the McCain campaign is how bad Obama is, not how good McCain would be and why.

Posted by: Luke | Oct 24, 2008 11:41:15 AM

The closing arguments will more likely take the form of closing excuses.

(1) "It's the economy, stupid." We were ahead until we were behind.

(2) "It's the incumbent, stupid." We had too strong a headwind -- the Bush administration legacy.

(3) "This is a generational transition." Obama was so much younger and energetic -- and unknown. And we were even older than Bush.

Posted by: Mack2 | Oct 24, 2008 11:41:54 AM

Today we learn that McCain believes in pallin' around with dictators, without preconditions. McCain had a friendly visit in the 1980s with Chile's military ruler, General Augusto Pinochet, one of the world's most notorious violators of human rights credited with killing more than 3,000 civilians and jailing tens of thousands of others. McCain didn't raise ANY questions of human rights, freedom or democracy with Pinochet. He was just pallin' around.

Still bashing the plumber, eh? Why don't some of you take a deep breath and realize that being critical of this man, who simply asked a reasonable question of the good Senator, totally misses the point. The point is not to focus on the plumber (who actually represents anyone concerned about the respective tax plans of the candidates) but to instead evaluate the unscripted (for once) reply, which clearly implies that if you make too much money (according to someone else's measure) you will be penalized in order to provide for someone who doesn't make enough (again, according to someone else's measure).

Posted by: skeptic | Oct 24, 2008 11:55:24 AM

yes the rich guys paying some taxes really scares me----what a joke--15% has all the money fool.

Posted by: rodney | Oct 24, 2008 11:57:14 AM

Ray,

I don't actually, but hopefully will someday. I just believe that in our country hard work pays off. We have more opportunity here than anywhere else in the world and the government coming in and infringing on liberty and personal property won't help anyone from the lower class straight up.

Our system is based on incentives. If you work hard you can achieve anything you want. When the government starts handing money out to people who do not deserve it our incentive system is corrupted. I'm hard pressed to find an example of any government run program that hasn't been a debacle (soc security, medicare, fannie freddie, on and on and on).

While I beleive that BO's proposals are well intentioned and look good on paper they will inevitably lead in practice to beauracratic ineffiencies, corruption and reduced competition. Think about what it would actually take to implement a nationalized healthcare system.

Just my opinions though. I appreciate what everyone has to say, short of name calling and personal attacks. I urge everyone to make their own decisions and try to avoid having the media reach your conclusions for you.

The contrasts in my posts above which I beleive are factual and smear free are why I am voting for McCain.

Posted by: steve | Oct 24, 2008 11:58:19 AM

What ever happened to McCain's "I can fix that...I know how to do that" It seems to me he has grand ideas of his own importance but no vision for our country. So what if we have a Dem congress and Pres. Ideas will flourish and our country will grow.

Posted by: Irene Macconnell-Davinroy | Oct 24, 2008 11:59:25 AM

The country is tired of all the negative ads and hate things coming out of Sarah Palins mouth. The American people also do not want another V.P. abusing power. Sarah was found guilty for abusing her power but faces on legal charges.

McCain has a long record to back up his rhetoric so electing him is no leap of faith.
===========================

REALLY STEVE?

Here's some of his record. Do you see him "backing up" his own rhetoric?
------------------------
Audience member: "Are we getting closer and closer to, like, socialism?"

McCain: "Here's what I really believe: That when you reach a certain level of comfort, there's nothing wrong with paying somewhat more."
----------------------------
Audience member: "Why is it that someone like my father who goes to school for 13 years gets penalized in a huge tax bracket because he's a doctor."

McCain: "I think it's to some degree because we feel obviously that wealthy people can afford more."
------------------------------------
"I cannot in good conscience support a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of middle class Americans who most need tax relief."
------------------------------
TIM RUSSERT: The fact is you are different than George Bush.

SEN. McCAIN: No. No. The fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I’ve been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.

SURE DOES SEEM ODD HE'S ATTACKING OBAMA WHEN HE STOOD FOR THE SAME THINGS JUST A FEW YEARS AGO.

SEN McCAIN DIED WHEN GOP CANDIDATE McCAIN WAS NOMINATED.

I have NO trust in his eratic judgment!

Posted by: Dave in VA - REAL VA! | Oct 24, 2008 12:00:58 PM

hehe.

i think the republicans know down deep this election is lost/over and now that they have really made their party into some kind of retard/racist/war lover magnet they now realize what kind of a "moronic majority" they now are because of the kinds of voters they attempt to attract . in fact they are a minority politically and that will be their downfall.

the republican party is completely out of touch with main street and could care less about the working man/woman ,joe jill or whoever. all they care about are tax cuts for the elite rich and more taxpayer bailout corporate welfare and fat cat giveaways.

NO MORE !!!

Posted by: rodney | Oct 24, 2008 12:03:13 PM

Maybe because I'm older than most, I remember a time when being a Republican was not about attacks. When it meant balancing the budget, keeping the national debt in check, providing for "domestic tranquility." Being a Democrat was much the same, from a different point of view. Now I wonder if this campaign is covered by the Hate-Crime statutes. Not only the abuse from the podium about two Americas, real and un-real, pro and anti Americans, but also from forums like this one. So much hate, so much self righteousness. It is scary. I do remember Joe McCarthy, vaguely.

The times I remember are not the Reagan years, he was in fact the first to blow the national debt out of the water. He was the author of "trickle-down" economics. Which means heap lots of money and resources on the rich to keep them that way and some will dribble from their chins down to the rest of us. Regardless of each of us getting our little checks for $300 thinking our taxes were reduced, when the dollar value of your income tanks, it is much the same as having a tax increase; but without paying down the gross national debt.
When it is ok for the super rich to get paid a million a month or more, and get tax rebates of more than I make in three years, (and yes, I do NOT qualify for a tax cut under Obama,) more than Palin can spend on clothes in ten years, there is something very wrong with America.

Posted by: SherryP | Oct 24, 2008 12:03:44 PM

The rich guys paying taxes...15% have all the money...?? Who pays the lion's share of taxes? Something like 70% of all federal taxes are paid by those in the top 10% in income. I know they're rich, but it seems they pay quite a bit already, wouldn't you agree? And who runs the businesses and makes the investments that employ the rest of us and help to keep the economy going...?

"#3 -- Democrats "United": The McCain campaign will argue the nation needs a McCain administration to check a Congress led by Democrats"

This is nonsense. As the Republicans have showed with their record-setting filibusters, their minority in the Senate will probably have the power to continue to gridlock the changes desired by the majority of the electorate.

Before December 31, 2008 John McCain will publicly state his regret for the way he has allowed his campaign to be run. Move over Keating 5, there is a new "lowest moment."

8. McCain makes speech about Joe the POW.

Hasn't he already tried all those 3? With 11 days left, I highly doubt it will resonate with any voters. Barack Obama has portrayed the calmness and deep knowledge he has on every issue. I'm so proud of the democratic candidate this year. We have been disappointed so many times. I can't wait till election night.

And don't forget Nuber 4# Attack the current head of your party...President Bush...and then tie Obama to Bush.

Wow!! Does McCain even care what he is saying anymore? And he says Obama will say anything to win. At the very least, McCain could wind this campaign down with some class...but here is he going even more negative with a new ad. ;-)

When I look at John McCain's past the movie 'Manchurian Candidate" always comes to mind. I'm afraid of what he'll do if hw wins the election and he sees the Queen of Diamonds

I'm a Canadian watching closely from the outside and it boggles my mind how this election is even close. Obama is everything a President should be and McCain is an insult to your collective intelligence. The only question remaining is whether or not you actually have any collective intelligence. We'll see in a couple of weeks.

#1: Let me know if John McCain also thinks that Clintonism is socialism and Warren Buffet supports what McCain believes to be Obama's "socialist" agenda.

#2: McCain won't need to be tested because al Qaida's supporters have already concluded that he will be as stupid and trigger-happy as George W Bush and electing him means the terrorist organization can continue their strategy of exhausting our country militarily and economically.

#3: A Democratic White HOuse and Congress --- that will just be like having a majority government in a parliamentary system.
