Why Powell Did It
October 20, 2008 7:49 AM
Former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama is huge.
This wasn't just an endorsement of Barack Obama. This was a rejection of John McCain, President George W. Bush, and the party they represent.
People close to Powell and Obama tell ABC News that Powell met with both McCain and Obama early in the summer and he told them both that his endorsement would depend on the conduct of the campaign, the conventions, the debates, and their choice of vice president.
Powell didn't speak to McCain again after that meeting. Obama followed up several times with phone calls to Powell and they spoke about foreign policy, national security, and domestic issues like education.
Obama courted Powell, but what helped to push Obama over the edge was the conduct of McCain's campaign and McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running-mate.
Powell, a four-star general, was also a bit rankled that McCain's team leaked the idea that the GOP candidate was perhaps considering Powell for vice-president, sources tell ABC News.
During his endorsement of Obama, Powell went out of his way to say that we need a president like Obama who would transform Bush's unilateral foreign policy. Powell took a direct hit on McCain's judgment by saying he picked a vice presidential candidate who wasn't ready to be president.
He absolutely repudiated the conduct of McCain's campaign by saying that bringing up former 1960's radical Bill Ayers is not a legitimate campaign issue in any way.
His endorsement is a real signal to moderate Republicans and independents that Barack Obama is okay. As former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said on "This Week" yesterday, Powell's endorsement pretty much eliminates the experience argument for people who are worried about Obama.
The bottom line? Powell really wanted to make sure that this endorsement mattered. It was very direct and very cutting.
A new ABC News/Washington Post poll suggests that Powell's views are in line with the American public.
Palin has proved to be a drag on the Republican ticket with 52 percent of voters saying they are less confident in McCain because he chose Palin as his running-mate.
The latest ABC/Post poll found 60 percent of voters believe the McCain campaign's Ayers attack is not a legitimate issue. The most optimistic person almost always wins in presidential races.
The poll found that 57 percent of independent voters say Obama is the more optimistic candidate, while 31 percent say that about McCain.

Good of his country... he is the epitome of hypocricy and traitor... the inhumanity and injustice of abortion supercedes any horror stories about slavery a hundredfold... to wink at that via "endorsement" is a slap in the face to justice...

Powell had no choice. If you're a black person in America and don't support Obama (I am and I don't) then you will be an outcast in your local black community. People you've known your whole life will call you a traitor to your race. This exact thing is happening all over the U.S. in the black communities. Believe it or not, not all black people are mesmerized by Senator Obama they just can't publicly say so.

Why I am voting Democrat!
I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending MY MONEY than I would. I think when you spread the wealth around it is good for everybody! It’s Patriotic!
I'm voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. All profits are evil and should be confiscated for Government Redistribution.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe that MORE Government regulations and higher taxes on Business will stop Business from exporting their jobs to Countries with LESS Government regulations and lower taxes.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe terrorists should be allowed to have trials in American courts. And be able to subpoena top secret documents, soldiers, government officials, etc. to cross examine for their defense. They should have ACLU lawyers who can help intimidate Americans who serve on the juries!
I'm voting Democrat because I believe Gay Marriage should be the law of the land and will probably produce better children.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe English should not be the official language of the United States. I don’t mind pushing one for English when I use the phone.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe partial birth abortion is okay but water boarding a terrorist is disgusting.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe having a domestic terrorist like Bill Ayers as a close friend is a good thing. It allows for great relations with foreign terrorists.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe in a FREE government health care system. I believe doctors, nurses, hospitals, drug companies, etc. will gladly donate their time, products, services, facilities, etc. for FREE and that will be a better system.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe in and support trial lawyers, frivolous lawsuits and outrageous jury verdicts.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe 9/11 was an inside job to con the American people to go to war for oil.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe social security is solvent and that there is a social security lock box and I don’t believe social security is a Ponzi scheme.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe MOST AMERICANS are bitter and cling to their guns and religion. Let’s rid our country of guns and religion!
I'm voting Democrat because I believe illegal aliens deserve all the rights of ordinary Americans plus some additional rights Americans do not have.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe corporations should pay higher taxes! I believe higher taxes on business will make the price of their products and services LESS EXPENSIVE.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe groups like ACORN who register felons, drug addicts, wino’s, homeless drifters, illegal aliens, dead people, children, fictional Disney characters, etc. makes my vote count more.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe celebrating the winter solstice shows compassion for the small minority of people that do not celebrate Christmas.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe hard core criminal murders and rapists deserve life and that the innocent unborn deserve death. It’s a choice I can live with.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe Bush caused Hurricane Katrina and he blew-up the levies in the ninth ward of New Orleans.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe that any one who is not partaking in one of the many wonderful government programs obviously has too much money and should pay higher taxes.
I'm voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq the terrorists will be happy and now think of us as good people.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe our soldiers are AIR RAIDING villages and killing innocent people.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe sex in the Oval Office with an intern is a private matter and that everybody lies under oath about sex.
I'm votin Demokrat becuse I wus edumkated at a publick sckrool. I lik da Natsionel Edukatshun Assoseeashun!
I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as it does not offend people. Can’t we all just get along?
I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits are wrong. I believe higher taxes on oil companies will produce lower prices at the pump.
I'm voting Democrat because I believe we need to rid ourselves of dependency on foreign oil, BUT I AM AGAINST offshore drilling for oil and natural gas, drilling in Anwar, building nuclear power plants and clean coal technology.
And finally, I'm voting Democrat because I believe Reverend Wright when he said “GODDAMN AMERICA” and “OUR CHICKENS ARE COMING HOME TO ROOST”. Hey let’s make a comfortable nest for those chickens!
Why are you voting Democrat?

Come on, no one in the media will say the obvious, it's all about the skin color, and that's been hyped by the code word "historic". Month's ago people were talking about what Powell would do, it just shows what little character he has.

If there was a black Republican running against Obama--Who do you think Powell would endorse?
Posted by: 7april77 | Oct 20, 2008 9:03:14 AM
"k", just wondering, what on earth do you think the "demmies" are? People who do not like negative ads? People who want a compassionate government? People who want all children to have the option to learn? People who do not like war for war's (or oil's) sake? People who want a candidate who does more than recite incendiary phrases? People who don't hype themselves as 'fiscally responsible' while running up the largest deficit in history? People who believe that the families with the least income should not have the bigger tax burden? Yeah. Let's show the world that.

Lets talk real ... I really want Palin to be our next president, surely I do!
You know what that will do? Consider this what will happen after Palin as our Commander-in-cheif:
America will engage another war with Iran. We are already in war with Iraq & Afganistan. Iran is a much bigger country than Iraq. Total population of all 3 countries will be more than the population of US. One way or other the whole mid-east will be rattled, oil price will soar, our economy will sink more! We will be in deep recession! There will be lot more homeless folks in your neighborhood! Every morning you will be enjoying shock-n-awe of American air-power and cooky Rumford! Good morning America :)
So, please vote for Palin, you haven't seen anythin' yet!

"Bubby" - dear, that's not what 'redistribution of wealth' means. And it doesn't mean making the rich poor. It means taking the extreme burden of taxation off the poor, and getting the rich to shoulder it more, rather than letting their armies of tax accountants find loopholes for them to shelter their money (which is another way of saying 'hiding' their money). Look, nobody WANTS to pay taxes, but face it, if you're making $300,000 or more a year, you can handle it more (maybe a few less vacations -or vacation homes-, but your lifestyle will still be good, good, good - you're not going to be in the Food Pantry line at church).

Five and a half years ago, liberals wished for Colin Powell's death. The venomous attacks they threw at him were disgusting.
Now, they are at his feet. Giddy with excitement.
Oh they can "claim" it doesn't matter to liberals. Yet here they are, in here on blogs about Powell, drooling over this.
Posted by: Obama = Socialist | Oct 20, 2008 9:08:56 AM
The only people who hated Colin power were the people at the very far left who can't forgive him for his role in the Iraq war and the very far right who can't forgive him for not drinking the neocon Iraq Kool-Aid.
The vast majority of liberals, moderates, and conservatives respect Colin Powell. And his endorsement will do much to win over independents and disaffected Republicans to Obama.
Bur more important than Powell's endorsement of Obama are his statments about Muslims. It's about time someone of Powell's stature said clearly that there's nothing wrong with being Muslim -- that we are all Americans.
I think that anything General Powell did wrong regarding Iraq was redeemed by his humane and eloquent statements about tolerance.
Posted by: Alex | Oct 20, 2008 9:09:17 AM
Is anyone surprised by Powell's endorsement. On Sept. 15, 2008, Powell stated it would be electrifying to elect an African American for president. So no matter who the African American is, they would have his endorsement. No surprise, just disappointed that he wasn't honest for the reason of his endorsement.

That is GREAT!!!!!
Posted by: Jane | Oct 20, 2008 9:12:42 AM
Powell did it for one reason only, and it isn't for the white side of Obama's family tree. Anyone that disagrees with that is lying. My question to all the white people voting for Obama is what is wrong with you? Obama went to a church for 20 years that all but insighted violence against "greedy white Americans" and yet you are so enthralled by his oratory skills that you don't care?! My question to all Black people voting for him is do you really agree that he should get a pass for everyone he has associated with with and whose behavior he has consequently endorsed with his presence? People like William Ayers, Father Pfleger, Jeremiah Wright, Rezko will only fluorish under an Obama presidency and will continue to rot our country from the inside out!! A vote for Obama is a vote for weaker national defense, much much larger goverment, and killing of the self-reliance mentality that has made America the biggest and strongest nation in the world. Obama is telling everyone that he will turn us into France and people faint at his rallies. Some Americans truly are dumb.

Can I copy it and e-mail balst it?
Posted by: Jane | Oct 20, 2008 9:14:53 AM
Not that it makes any difference (come on, get your comments over with), but I am disappointed in General Powell's decision. Obama has no experience in military matters since he has never served, and by comments he has made and his attitude in certain issues, has sort of evaded military issues, and has not stated much about how he would treat the military. Its very important that we have a strong military force more than ever. We're going to need it. Obama takes an extreme liberal stand and would take this country into deeper trouble. He talks about change, but has never been precise and has never elaborated on what that actually means. He'll bring change, alright, but I believe it won't be the change that our country desperately needs now. We need strength, and Obama hasn't shown much of that. He'll say what we want to hear, but he changes his statements, depending on the situation he's in. Maybe thats the change he's talking about. In the long run, if he gets to be our president, I fear for this country. But then again, maybe we have it coming.

You don't need to ask why, you just need to listen to Obama say that there will be a cabinet post for Powell in his administration. I believe that a lawyer would call the quid pro quoe

Obama=socialist,
How do you not understand basic economics? Socialism/communism always crops up as a popular alternative whenever we have downturns in our economy. The problem is that anytime the government has tries to give people $ for doing nothing it kills the incentive to get an alarm clock, keep you legs closed before you get married and become a productive member of society. As for America's current state of oppressing the poor, the poor don't even pay taxes! 40% of the 95% of people this Marxist is going to give my $ to don't even pay federal taxes. Here are some real quick facts for anyone who claiming that the rich need to do more. The weatlhies 10% of all income earners pay 70% of the taxload, and the bottom 50% of income earners pay less then 3% of taxes!! If you want my honest opinion, it's time for the poor to start pulling some more weight!! Get rid of the cigarettes, cut out the 3 trips to Wendy's a week and start shopping at the Salvation Army.

Colin Powell loves abortion. It is as simple as that. It was clear that the Palin VP pick is what made him defect. Also, he could not bear to have another conservative Supreme Court justice that would defend the lives of babies in their mother's wombs. He didn't seem to have much of a problem with McCain's 100-year war philosophy so Powell also does not seem to mind killing and taking of life in the battlefield either. It was Powell's gutless role as fall-guy that allowed us to go into Iraq.
As such, I can not support either candidate. Neither respects life. Obama does not respect life of unborn children and neither McCain nor Palin respect life of the many civilians killed as "collateral damage" as we carry on with our folly in Iraq.

Would anybody expect anything different from Colon Blow Powell. Blacks are going to stick together. You really think Obama is going to do anything for White's?
Posted by: Mp | Oct 20, 2008 9:31:13 AM
It is amazing to see a distinguished republican and general voice his endorsement and support for Obama. The truth of the matter is that this nation’s reputation around the world has deteriorated and needs to be mended once again, even, with our allies. McCain will only, more, damage our reputation and our perception around the world by using the same old George W. Bush policies that have not worked. McCain supporting George W. Bush 90 percent of the time reflects the same policies he will continue adapt and more severely damage us. It is time that we as American confront the world reputation that has been damage and work to mend it. It is important for us to work in improving our economy, and tackle down the issue of deficit and once again work in balancing the budge as Clinton was able to do. We our leaving a massive debt for our children to pay in the future, that is immoral, irresponsible, ungodly, and ignorant. We need to set up a great reputation again, so that our children will have a better future and tackle these important issues. McCain just offers more of the same, but Obama offers exactly what this generation of American needs, innovation, intelligence, substance, inspiration, and vibrancy.

You can say forget Bill Ayers, but it shows what the Character is of Obama to associate with Him and a bunch of other shady people and I’m sure Obama’s ideology and thinking is very similar to Ayers and some of the other people that have been involved in banking scam that has ripped the taxpayers of Millions. You just can’t accept it or you just want to deny it. They all are trying to push the leftist movement in one way or another. Ayers did it violently and Obama is trying to do it peacefully through the political system. No real difference in there thinking.

I agree with American Mom's reasons to vote Democrat!!!!
Colin Powell? The future will see him as a traitor to this country.
