'This Week' Roundtable Debates Candidates' Closing Arguments

October 26, 2008 1:28 PM

ABC News' George Will, Cokie Roberts, Sam Donaldson and Peggy Noonan of the Wall Street Journal joined us this Sunday and discussed the presidential candidates' final arguments, and what, if anything, John McCain can say or do to reverse the poll numbers.

Fantastic show this morning!

Just days away from an historic election in which a young, dynamic black man is about to be elected President of the United States, having thoroughly stomped two icons of modern American politics in Hillary Clinton and John McCain, I get to listen to five white millionaires discussing the future of the GOP.

Great stuff.

How nice it is. One candidate giving us hope and another one just only fears.
They have simplified our choices.

I guess the fear of media bias has tempered the discussion of Governor Palin.

The attention she is drawing is the result of an unknown being thrust on the National stage, she was new, her record not widely reported and her qualifications unusual.

It soon became apparent based on her conduct, her appearance, her speeches and her record that this is not someone with the tools to Governor. Delivering barn burner speeches to a narrow base with strong criticisms of your opponent was not well received by Independents or moderate republicans.

Cookie Roberts was overly kind and I suspect less than candid. George Will is too consumed with the importance of the base, who has no where else to go to begin with, would reject Obama if he was a decorated war vet (cough Kerry).

The Republican base have become marginalized and until the GOP understands it needs to appeal to a broader group of voters, they will continue to be trivialized to the point of irrelevance .

I am a liberal voting for Obama, but...
I can't stand Sam Donaldson! He is a pompous, bullying blowhard. I agree with his politics more than George Will, but am so tired of him not giving the others their space. It is Sunday morning, time for civil discourse. He belongs on the cable shows where no one listens because they're too busy yelling their party's talking points at each other.

BTW We are all in this together. Americans enjoyed the benefits of the housing boom fueled by low interest rates and liberal lending practices. We bought houses with no money down, refinanced multiple times as interest rates fell and values went up (based on irrational speculation)- remodeling our kitchens, paying off other debts, taking cruises, financing a lifestyle few of us could afford. To suddenly say that we, the people, are the victims is ignoring the last 15 years. We are all to blame on some level. It is time we owned up to it.

What worries me is the fact that we all must live together once this election is over. We can't continue the fear tactics and lies that the GOP has chosen as their political course. The rhetoric has been so divisive and dangerous on their part that it concerns me. There is a percentage, hopefully small, of the people that really believe the lies and smears towards Sen. Obama. What the GOP must do now is start a POSITIVE psychological campaign to ease the fears and anger that they are responsible for creating. I would hope that this would be done, yet am realistic enough to know that it will likely get much worse. Shameful and irresponsible.

What have republicans done to our country? It's a disgrace.

Posted by: ed | Oct 26, 2008 5:05:14 PM

I just finished reading a bio on McCain, wow, this guy is mentally ill. He had psychological problems when he was a kid and in the Navy, but after the POW years he came back severely troubled. His friends and enemies call him erratic and undisciplined, boy are they being mild. His temper tantrums and feuds and grudges are legionary. My God, what was the GOP thinking to make this guy their candidate?

Posted by: GOPsucks | Oct 26, 2008 5:19:00 PM

McCain's campaign has been grounded in fear -- fear of the dark, i.e. an African American; fear of the administrative and legislative branches of government having a majority, meaning that the business of governing, instead of gridlock, can move this country out of the morass and into the future. The GOP in Congress has reveled in inaugurating and continuing
policies promoted by an administration that has been as close to evil as any we've ever had. As far as taxes going up, well, how else will we be able to pay for the bailout of Wall St.? Do you people realize just how much of our U.S. is owned by other countries? What happens if they call in their markers?
THINK, people, and tighten your belts if you want this country to survive as the HOME OF THE FREE!

Obama is way, way ahead in the polls. He's transformational.

The press will not publish or report anything derogatory about Obama, nor anything positive about McLame.

The Obama campaign has been nothing less than brilliant, and McLame's completely lackluster.

This has all the tell tale signs -- Obama is going to manage to lose, isn't he?!

How strange to have today's discussion feature no Democratic rep or people of color on the Round Table. This close to an African-American candidate making serious history?

Suckered once again into spinning the set up "script" for yet another "stolen" Republican election, McCain's "we will win" smile suggests the steal is on (see roadblocks to early voting nationally, recently published books, purging of voters etc)

Word to the wiseguys- This time, the "people" have candidate Obama's back so be prepared for a big time turnout and no such thing as failure for the Democrats, no matter how hard you all try.

HI GOPsucks ,

please read books on Obama as well. McCain is sick and you will find Obama is a fraud. At least we know who and what McCain is but we really don't know who and what Obama is, even his people don't know.

Posted by: Truth | Oct 26, 2008 7:28:18 PM

How can we trust these polls? Any idea?

Obama lead drops to 5 points

Posted by: do we really care about the polls? | Oct 26, 2008 7:30:20 PM

The polls are all over the place because of methodology issues. It could be close or it could be an Obama landslide; probably Obama wins either way. But ultimately, it depends who goes out and bothers to vote.

If this is a landslide for Obama, the real question is what is the future of the Republicans. My guess is that once time has passed, it will not be Palin.

And lastly, I would kindly disagree with 'Truth' above. I think it is fairly clear who Obama is if you have been paying attention. I would agree that many who support him have a false sense of who he is and will be disappointed to find he is not as liberal as they thought.

The media will be held accountable for all the mistakes and problems an obama administration will bring to this country.

I had a friend of mine send me an email telling everyone that Obama is Hitler. This is how far all this hateful, divisive, ruinous attacks has affected even this devote, good, Christian woman. It made my heart hurt. I am sending you the reply I sent her, and I wish that everyone would look at what they are saying and really think about it.

I know you are sincerely one of the best people I have ever met in my whole life. Bar none. And I think that is why getting these kind of messages from you has upset me so much. I am not a Democrat or a Republican, I have always voted for the person/program as opposed to a party. And so it really worries me when I read something that is so full of hate. Our nation is going to have to pull together after November 4th, all of us. Right-Left-Center if we are going to again become the nation we can be. It is going to take compromises and hard work from all of us. We are in a place that we have not been in since the first depression, and they all had to work together so that afterward they could become the strongest country in the world. And they fought through hard times, fear and financial struggles to make it, and now we have to face the same things. It is sad that such a nation has come so low, but the saddest part for me is all the hate mongering and fear tactics that have abounded in the last several months. This is something we can not afford to have as part of our lives because it will cause this angry rift between the rich, the working class and the poor to never heal. I fear this more than anything, the fact that we may never be the same strong country as we were years ago. Because a country can only be as strong as its weakest link, I really believer that. I hope my saying this does not offend you, I would never want to do that. But to see such messages coming from you, of all people, is a clear indication of how far we, as a country, have come. You are such a loving person, and the feeling I get in my heart whenever I think of you is of such pure loving goodness. I am not trying to tell you how you should vote, I don't care how you vote but to just remember that because someone has a different view of things does not make them evil, it just makes them different. Regardless of their name, their skin color or their religion it is their heart that makes them good or bad. And since only God can see into someone's heart, I want him to be the one to judge, not us with our imperfect souls.

George,
When Sam Donaldson is on the soapbox about the financial system, he should at least have his facts straight. While complaining that banks aren't lending even though they've received government money, he overlooks one key fact: the original nine banks hadn't even received the money as of the time of your show. The intention to invest in the banks was announced, but not yet funded. So before you crucify these banks, most of whom do not need the money but had it forced upon them, at least get the facts correct.
