Will This Change the Senate Odds?

October 28, 2008 4:33 PM

Donkey_081013_main The Republican National Committee has taken out a $5 million line of credit to shore up vulnerable Senate Republicans and to keep Senate Democrats from winning a filibuster-proof 60 seat majority, a RNC official tells ABC News' Teddy Davis.

Of the $5 million, $2 million has gone to the National Republican Senatorial Committee and $3 million is going to "coordinated expenditures."

With Barack Obama leading John McCain in the latest polls, and Democrats poised to pad their majority in the House where a simple majority is enough to control the agenda, the Senate is viewed by Republican strategists as perhaps the last best chance for the GOP to hold some measure of power.

Sorry, have I missed something...aren't loans and credit hard to come by these days?

Who "loaned" the RNC the money?

I has to be coming from the $700 Billion
bailout. One of the criteria in receiving it
is giving compensation to incompetent fiscal management, bonuses to the worse performance
officials and making sure they guarantee
that no upper management loose their
severences. What a Country !!!

Obama is a very smart person. Consider this: everybody was pressuring him to choose Hillary Clinton as his running mate. If that had happened, McCain would have gone with Romney, and that would have made the Obama/Clinton a very weak ticket. With Obama not caving in to public pressure to choose Hillary, McCain showed bad judgment by impusively picking Sarrah Palin, who has turned out to be everybody's nuissance, as a running mate. Talking about buyers remorse for McCain.

Interesting strategy analysis.

A strange fat man in a bowler hat came to my door asking for hamburgers. He said he would gladly pay me Tuesday. I don't have any money for the Republicans because I gave it to him.

I am white woman in my 60’s from Indiana.

I am registered as a Democrat but I believe I would be more aptly described as an Independent. I have never voted for the party but have always voted for the candidate and their stance on the major issues. I have voted in every election since I was first eligible. Never in all those elections was I as passionate as I am about this election.

I first saw Barack Obama on TV during the 2004 democratic convention and admired the wonderful speech he gave. My knowledge of John McCain was limited to his time as a Prisoner of War so I didn’t know much about him and his policies.

After the presidential primary, I have read everything imaginable about Barack Obama and John McCain so I have definitely done my research.

I was leaning toward voting for Barack Obama but was still unsure until several things swayed me totally away from John McCain:

When John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential candidate, I was totally astounded that he would pick a total unknown after meeting her for 15 minutes and I was thoroughly insulted that McCain thought by picking Sarah that he would appeal to the women voters. I was angry that he thought women voters would vote for Sarah because of her gender and that he thought that women voters didn’t have the sense to sort through and vote for the issues. I was even angrier the more I listened to Sarah Palin and knew that she was not ready for, prepared for or intelligent enough for the Vice Presidency.

I was originally impressed that John McCain said he would run a clean campaign. Then shortly after picking Sarah Palin, he (and Sarah) started in with the personal attacks on Barack Obama. It was very disheartening hearing all the things he was throwing at Barack Obama when people really only wanted to hear what he thought on the issues. It was Karl Rove campaign tactics at their best.

I have been absolutely impressed that Barack Obama has run a campaign free of personal attacks on John McCain and has run his campaign with knowledge, wisdom, honesty and integrity when he had so many things he could have brought up about John McCain and Sarah Palin. Has has attacked John McCain on the issues but he has continued to campaign and lay out his plans for the presidency while John McCain and Sarah Palin have continued on their campaign to personally attack Barack Obama while skirting around the issues.

I have heard all of the personal attacks John McCain has thrown at Barack Obama mostly concerning people he had associated with in the past but also attacks were made about Obama’s faith and religion. As these attacks continued day after day, I read more about John McCain, I found out that he had been chasing Cindy McCain while still married to his first wife who had been seriously injured and crippled in an auto accident.

I read about his involvement and friendship with G. Gordon Liddy who was imprisoned for his part in the Watergate burglary. That’s just one element of what Liddy did, and proposed to do, in a secret White House effort to subvert the Constitution. When asked about his connection to G. Gordon Liddy in an interview the other day, John McCain said “yes, I’ve met him”. When pressed, he admitted that “ yes, he did know him”. In fact, in 1998 Liddy’s home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, Liddy has made many contributions to the Senator’s campaigns. Last November when McCain was on Liddy’s radio show, Liddy greated John as “an old friend” and McCain said to Liddy: “I’m proud of you, I’m proud of your family. It’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great”.

I also read about John McCain’s part in the Keating 5 Savings and Loan scandal that cost taxpayers $2.6 billion. McCain was found guilty by the Senate Ethics Committee of using “poor judgement” for attending meetings with regulators on Keating’s behalf.

Carl Lindner, Chairman of American Financial Group and former chairman of Chiquita International, made his fortune from the savings and loan industry and junk bonds. In 2008. Lindner raised over $2 million for McCain’s Presidential campaign. Lindner also serves on McCain’s Ohio Victory Team. Carl Lindner was recently implicated in a scandal where he oversaw the payment by Chiquita and its executives of roughly $1.7 million to a Columbian paramilitary group that was designated a terrorist organization. Chiquita made similar payments to the leftist FARC and ELN guerillas during Lindner’s oversight.

The Republican National Committee spent over $150,000 in the month of September on clothing, hair cuts and makeup for Sarah Palin. And she didn’t spend that money at Walmart, JC Penney, Goody’s or Kohl’s. No, she spent it at Neiman Marcus and Saks 5th Avenue. Does this not even bother you a bit when people have lost jobs, lost their 401K’s, seniors have lost money, people have no insurance? For her to spend $150,000 is a slap in the face to all Americans who are hurting right now.

The investigation by the Alaskan Legislature just found Sarah Palin guilty of abuse of power and ethics violation. Then Sarah Palin went on national TV saying that they had found her not guilty.

It has just been reported that Sarah Palin has been taking her children on official business trips and Alaskan citizens have picked up the tab for separate hotel rooms for the kids.

Barack Obama had every right to retaliate against the unfair treatment by John McCain and Sarah Palin but never once did he bring up any of these things or personally attacked either John McCain or Sarah Palin..

Have you or anyone in your family lost a job lately? I live in a small town in Indiana where we have lost thousands of jobs to the housing slow-down but mostly to jobs being sent to foreign countries. My daughter lost her high-paying job due to the housing slow-down. I have several relatives who have lost their manufacturing jobs to foreign countries; however, John McCain has always supported and continues to supports giving tax cuts to those companies who send jobs overseas. Barack Obama wants to take those tax cuts away and give them to companies who keep jobs in the United States. We NEED those jobs here in the US.

John McCain has long been a supporter of no regulatory oversight of the financial industry and what happens? Financial meltdown. How much did your 401K lose? Has anyone lost their job due to this meltdown? If not, they may soon. I know many people in our area who have worked hard all their lives and have not only lost thousands of dollars in their savings and 401K’s but have also lost their jobs. Jobs losses will continue.

I am now firmly behind Barack Obama. While John McCain and Sarah Palin have continued attacking Barack Obama, I have been listening to Barack Obama’s speeches about his views, his stance on the issues, what he belives in and what he will do if elected. How refreshing to hear Barack Obama’s speeches instead of the mud John McCain and Sarah Palin are slinging. That is why I am so passionate about Barack Obama’s campaign. I hope you will share my passion.

...and today, Ted Stevens (R-AK) the disillusioned Republican senator, who claims he was NOT convicted, says he will stay on -- even if elected. I wonder how the GOP will feel, knowing that they have a convicted felon amongst them.....

Here is why I cannot vote for John McCain I have searched and researched for any indication that this man could lead the nation out of the mess wefind ourselves in today I in good conscience can't vote for McCain he's failed to provide his Military records and his medical records from when he returned from being held captive. What I did find out about him as a man distubed me a great deal He's shown poor judgment in the past I don't see that changing since he's 72 years old. His campaign has been the worst in history too negative and seems to be more irrational as time goes by America can't afford to have him as Our next president I'm voting for Barack Obama and Joe Biden I also can't vote for a guy who hides behind his service record that his father the admiral had sealed because he was too ashamed of what his son did WITH and FOR the enemy during Vietnam.

How about it, corporate PAC's? Are you going to ante up and pay the loan, thereby guaranteeing favorable tax policies and other miscellaneous influence?

It seems that Democrats are going to have firmer control of Congress than they had in the 1970's. Comparisons with Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Congresses?
