Does Hillary Really Want the Job?

November 19, 2008 7:59 AM

My reporting tells me it's likely that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., will be Secretary of State, but no final decision has been made.

The reason? Clinton herself hasn't firmly decided that this is the job she wants.

She's concerned about giving up the independence she has as a senator.

She also has to worry about the $7.6 million campaign debt she still has from her presidential bid.

But the question about whether former President Bill Clinton's activities will be a block is moving towards getting resolved.

Sources tell me a team of lawyers has been working for the last two days negotiating over this.

An agreement is emerging whereby President Clinton would disclose donations to his foundation and any future paid speaking he does would be reviewed by ethics officials, such as the White House counsel or the State Department counsel.

The truth is, Obomba wants Bill nearby so he (Obomba) can take Monica's place.

The truth is, it's Bill that really wants Obomba to give him "a job".

Posted by: momomo | Nov 19, 2008 9:18:41 AM

Why would Obama pick her? She has her on personal Agenda and it will not change. She is out for Hillary and Hillary alone and what Obama needs to know is that if we had wanted her we would have voted for her. Now, I feel sure George is going to do what George always does and that is not get the facts straight. I hope she does get the job and then we will have no problem in voting against Obams in 2012. This is change we can believe it. It just looks like another Clinton administratio with all of its baggage, morality, and doing what is best for them. What is this man thinking?

George,

Why can't you just stop bashing Hillary Clinton, will you bash the other cabinet appointees with such vigor? I doubt it.

Hillary Clinton as SOS, what a joke! You, who are pro-this must have jobs that can't be duplicated overseas. Is this the Bill Clinton that originated NAFTA? We will all be working for $5/hr or looking for jobs in China. Both Clintons owe foreign, Big Time!! Clinton SOS, what a joke.

This is such a media driven story line. It seems that political analysts are taking lessons from the hosts of Entertainment Tonight, creating and focusing on drama and intrigue. Why shouldn't Obama ask Clinton to be SoS? Why should we even focus on what Bill Clinton did or didn't do months ago? Even as Obama seeks change, he simply cannot plunk down a bunch of new faces around him. He (and they) will not be taken seriously by the Congress, the House, or the International Community. He has to find people who have solid track records in their field to be surrounded by the best advisors. Since Clinton was the last democratic administration, and it was only 8 years ago (although it seems forever), it is only natural to pick some people who can hit the floor running. Find another story line, media, this one isn't catching.

Is Hillary capable of doing anything without creating circus level of drama and histrionics and me-me-me-ism? And she wonders why she's the single most polarizing politician alive in America. She wonders why she has a 49% national disapproval rating. She wonders why she completely alienates the base... of her OWN party. Hillary simply lacks a basic understanding of the worth and the grace of quiet dignity. Everywhere she goes, more than any politician alive in America, she leaves a wake of partisanship and division.

too bad for hillary, going from some control over the president by being a senator to being controlled by the president. where is all the change that Ofama oops Obama was going to bring to washington. dont see any change by naming people that have been controlling washington for decades. just under diffrent administrations. he should have stayed with condolisa rice

Posted by: MIKE | Nov 19, 2008 9:40:43 AM

obama needs to pick a sos from his OWN group.

sen. clinton should stay in the senate,
president clinton should continue doing the work he has been doing.

obama, is going to start looking like a lap dog after the clinton'

why can't he just leave the clinton' alone?

Posted by: u-n-i-t-y=UNITY | Nov 19, 2008 9:42:38 AM

time for obama to leave the clinton' alone,
let sen. clinton stay in the senate,
let president clinton continue his work,

and let obama find his own sos, from his own group.

If this were based on merit, it is simple, inarguable fact that Hillary wouldn't even crack a list of the top 100 most qualified candidates.

Bill Richardson, John Kerry, Jack Reed, Richard Holbrooke, Richard Danzig, Wes Clark, Rand Beers, Chuck Hagel, and Richard Lugar are just a handful of the many, many dozens of candidates who are possessed of far greater relevant expertise.

And as far as pure, natural diplomatic skill... how can anyone argue that Hillary is skilled at detente when everywhere she has gone her entire adult life she has left controversy, enmity, polarization, bitter partisanship, and division?

Other than on pure Machiavellian terms, there are no grounds on which Hillary is well suited for this job.

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton actually do like and respect each other, and they have obviously realized they will work well together on important foreign policy issues.

Hillary has been an international figure since she was First Lady and she did a great deal for women, children and families around the world, including in Afghanistan, Central Europe, Israel and Central America (to name a few).

She is perfect for the position of Secretary of State.

I'm a supporter of you Obama. Don't do it Obama!

Posted by: Tanya | Nov 19, 2008 9:54:11 AM

Thank GOD, Barack Obama doesn't listen to the uninformed people who post in places like this forum.

Someone just wrote here that Obama should pick "one of his own". What the heck does that mean? Does he have a group of experienced political leaders who belong to him and him alone? He's a Democrat, as is Hillary. And both of them are Centrists.

Hillary is a natural for the job of Secretary of State. Just look at her resume and all the work she has done at the international level dating back to the early 1990's. She started VITAL VOICES and that's just one of her many accomplishments to help women and girls in countries like Afghanistan.

Is she diplomatic? Did you watch her in the debates? She can think on her feet and is better informed about world affairs than anyone in government.

Go Hillary!!!!!!!!

Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton working as a team on foreign affairs sounds like an amazing trio to me.

If Obama picks Hillary for Secretary of State and she accepts, it will prove that the two of them have a great bond and will work well together.

Posted by: Diana Archer | Nov 19, 2008 10:01:54 AM

It's tough to give up a safe Senate seat for a cabinet post in someone else's administration. But I think she will accept it, after working it through with Obama. And I think they will be a superb team on foreign policy. Obama's vision and inspiration blended with Hillary's experience, expertise and international accessibility and goodwill will be sensational!

Posted by: hopesprings52 | Nov 19, 2008 10:02:01 AM

A great combination -- President Obama, Vice-President Biden and Secretary of State Clinton. The international community, from one ocean to the other, will be celebrating.

You can hate Hillary if you choose. But she's a major force in the Democratic Party, in the United States and around the world.

Go Obama!

Lee: are you a nasty person or what? Where does your twisted sense of humor come from? "another black family living in federal housing" is one (only one) of the most ignorant, tactless, hateful comments I've read here. This forum is about whether Hillary is interested in the SOS position. Do you have an opinion on that?

I hope she takes it, she'd be great. Obama is a generous person, and will ignore any campaign attacks by her. How much less $$ will she make as SOS, that it would make a difference in how she pays off her campaign debt? I think we'd have the world in the palm of our hands with this team. GO Obama!

Am I the only one who's observed that perhaps Hillary's personality is not the best fit for this job? The Secretary of State is our chief DIPLOMAT,and from what I've heard about HIllary diplomacy is not one of her strong suits.

Im a proud Republican, and honestly wouldnt mind seeing Hillary as Secretary of State. BUT, I thought all the Obama voters out there voted for change? Can someone please tell me, other than Obama himself, where the change part comes in? So far, he has staffed his White House with the Clinton Administration. How is that change? His administration did nothing! And dont give me that spill about balancing the budget either! All you liberals know is was the Republican controlled Congress that got that done. I mean come on, all the man did as President was get to know his interns a little bit better! We didnt even have a President for the last 4 years of his term! Even his former advisers said that. At any rate, I am still waiting on that change we were promised. But I will not hold my breath. To quote my bumber sticker on my car, "Dont blame me, I voted for McCain"!

Re: Lee's posting...
You are a disgusting, ignorant individual. Why don't you crawl back under the rock that you came from?
People who are intelligent don't want to waste their time reading your stupid comments.
Obama will not be another 3rd term of Bill Clinton. I am aniouxly awaiting pay increases, the ability to buy food and pay the mortgage without looking under the sofa cushions for change... like I have done the last 8 years under King George (the real idiot)!

Posted by: Sandee | Nov 19, 2008 10:24:52 AM

I predict volunteers and donations drop drastically if Obama appoints Hillary as SOS. There would be nothing more discouraging to those who worked and paid for CHANGE. Obama, get your head out of..... What could you be thinking?

Posted by: Susan-Boulder | Nov 19, 2008 10:25:12 AM

The election is over. Mature people recognize the heat of campaigning and let go after the final vote is counted. Barack Obama has been the mature focal point of post-election sanity. ..............

Then, why in the Holy Mary's world you chose to elect another inexperienced person to be the president.

The only hope you have left is to fave the person who is best fit for the job to help guarding and cleaning any potential messes.
