Moving Toward a Post-Racial America

November 05, 2008 3:09 AM

Obama_va_1_081103_main One of the most stunning facts of the turnout tonight is that only 74 percent of the electorate in this election was white.

Go back to 1976 and 90 percent of the electorate was white. We are seeing the rise of Hispanic and African American voters. This is the first election of the future.

In many ways, we are moving toward a post-racial America.

Look at how race really wasn't an issue in this campaign. Eighty percent of voters said they didn't take it into account anyway, and only 19 percent of the voters said they did.

And Obama won both groups.

George!

Stop confusing yourself. Your brain has suffered from being in the Obama tank for so long......

97% of AA voted for Obama! Oprah supported a candidate for the first time....

Would they have done that for a white man??

Why is that not racism???

"YOUR" GUY WON GEORGE. Congrats! But it's time to get out of the TANK and start being a journalist again....

Ok, please continue posting. My mistake
my mistake. Keep posting! Names are ok.
At least I can own up to making a mistake. Good morning to everyone.

Hello Folks,

Let me reiterate...74% of the electorate is (are) white. Is it true that racists can't do the math?

Also, thanks so much to the citizens of the world who posted comments, I hope this sends a message that there is still hope for the principles which this great country was founded upon. We are not perfect, far from it. But the audacity of hope still thrives among us!

Cheers Mr. President. Oh and BTW George you need to hang out with more intelligent staff and anchors. Your co-anchors (who I ususally enjoy) seemed so dumb last night. The panel however I enjoyed!

Cheers!

George just stated on GMA that race was less of a factor than expected. True for whites, but according to his own percentages, it must have been almost the ONLY factor for blacks....it's still racist. He said "McCain got 1% of the black voters, which is amazing in itself" But this election wasn't racist????

Posted by: Sue | Nov 5, 2008 7:31:49 AM

Jeez Louise, so many silly people posting here. I am African-American and am part of the 96 to 98% of African Americans who voted for Obama. THAT IS NOT RACISM you nitwits out there, since we are IN THE MINORITY in this country. The life chances and happiness quotient off African Americans has been systematically compromised since the forming of this "more perfect union" and all Americans know that. Second, I am a resident of Chicago in the GREAT STATE OF ILLINOIS. Whenever I see people writing so harsly about Obama being racist, Muslim, or non-American or unpatriotic. WE ELECTED HIM AND FOUND HIM TO BE NONE OF THOSE THINGS, so WHAT YOU ARE SAYING OFFENDS ILLINOISANS GREATLY. I think back to when WE elected him with over 70% of the vote in 2004....so I guess us Illinoisans-black, white, hispanic and asian-are responsible for unleashing this putrid, Muslim moron on you, right. Also, the "real" America Sarah Palin was spewing all her falsities to is shrinking not because of us African Americans but because AMERICA IS A LAND OF IMMIGRANTS you nitwits...your ancestors came here, mine were forced here so I think you might wanna go back to where YOUR forefathers came from if you dont like Obama being your president..most African Americans' families have been here longer and actually made the country the superpower it became (FOR FREE btw..remember slavery?. And there is my racially-charge two cents.

I am an independent conservative. I am 63 years old. I am white. I voted for Barak Obama. I did not vote for a black man. I voted for a leader. So much cynicism on this blog. Why don't you lose your bitter vitriolic thoughts and join the solution. Partisan politics and hate have eaten away at our fabric as a nation for too long. It is time to discard the useless past of partisan politics and cynicism and come together to solve our problems. Be a part of the solution not a part of the problem.

The media is feeding racism.

The only ones injecting race in this election is the Obama supporters and the media. All of you at ABC last night and Oprah too. It was terrible.

Most that vote see a man, you people see a black man. So when are we going to move forward? Ask yourselves first.

Posted by: Starts with you | Nov 5, 2008 7:58:44 AM

I did not vote for Obama. I despise the liberal media.

Posted by: Lucy | Nov 5, 2008 8:04:42 AM

The black vote has always been way higher for Democrats. But of course, the racists just doesnt have the brains to figure that one out. Theyre sitting in their trailer parks going... 'duuuuh' like Beavis & Butthead.

Oh well, theres always that % of population that is just a pollution of the gene pool. That pollution is called the republicans.

Posted by: JoeShmoe | Nov 5, 2008 8:06:39 AM

Ha ha ha... I am an Asian and am laughing at those who say "Blacks are racist because 98% of them voted for a black man." How funny! No further comment. Ha ha ha...

Posted by: Hwang | Nov 5, 2008 8:09:30 AM

I don't understand how this can be described as "post racial" while 92 percent of one race votes for the person of the same race. This should have been titeled "moving toward a post-white America", but I suppose Mr. Stephanopoulos thought that sounded too threatening to some people.

Posted by: DougBH | Nov 5, 2008 8:09:39 AM

Post racial? I don't think so. Obama played the race card early (against Bill Clinton, no less) and instilled fear in the press and politicians, that kept them from telling the truth. We don't have any record of him before he started running, except that he was a community organizer (he was at Harvard, but there is no record and no statements have been made of what he did there, for example). During the primary, Obama's race card scared superdelegates into supporting him, and also got him free delegates in Michigan, where his name wasn't even on the ballot. Appealing to race is just about as low as anyone can go, and so, Obama reveals what he is.

Posted by: tina | Nov 5, 2008 8:10:45 AM

Another point, its totally unbelievable how the ignorant racists refuse to acknowledge all the people who voted McCain just because they could NOT vote for a black man. Why arent they calling those racists out?

Also Obama had the young voters, are they going to call it 'ageism' too?

Posted by: JoeShmoe | Nov 5, 2008 8:13:25 AM

Thank goodness I can finally be proud of my country now that a black man is president! Maybe now, his wife can be a proud American. We finally got rid of all those whities! Whoooo hoooo! Never mind that he is obviously a Muslim. Affirmative action will never go away now. Thanks alot America! You will now get what you are asking for. Socialism. It works great in England.

Posted by: Chance | Nov 5, 2008 8:15:03 AM

Every Black person that I work with voted for Obama because he is black. They flat-out told me that! Admit it, it was a racist effort. Otherwise, I would have voted for him based on his qualification's, however, he had none, so obviously it was for another reason. I would be cheering right along side everyone else if Alan Keys was the new president. he is AA, and a good conservative. Well, at least we defeated the liberals Gay marriage agenda in many states. we made a little headway.

Posted by: John | Nov 5, 2008 8:22:32 AM

Rob: I agree with you. Obama's victory came because of this young generation of white college students that don't have the brains to sit on or a window to throw them out of. They are in their own little world of drugs and booze like Obama was in his college days. If it wasn't for Pelosi swindling Hillary out of her delegates she would be the President now. And the youth in this country are living in a dream world but they will wake up to reality when it all happens and this country goes down further than what it is now. Everything looks good to them now, but wait until the explosion. And Bin Laden was waiting for the outcome of this election.

Just reading some of the posts here just proves my earlier point--Racism is alive and well in America!

Isn't it funny that hundreds of thousands of Blacks have voted in previous Presidential elections for White candidates, but when they chose overwhelmingly to vote for a Black candidate- that's Racism.

I guess all of the Whites who voted for a White candidate last night and in all previous Presidential elections must have been Racist, too - for Whites only.

If you're a Racist and don't like Blacks, just say so.

Don't hide behind statements like:

"go talk to the 96% of blacks who voted STRICTLY due to his skin color"

"When 97 of blacks vote for obama what else can you call it. The sad part is that while 43% of whites are willing to vote for a black"

"97% of AA voted for Obama! Oprah supported a candidate for the first time....Would they have done that for a white man??"

It only makes your point very hollow. You'd gain much more respect if you just came out and said "I'm White, a Racist, and proud to be one!" or "I hate all Blacks" instead of skirting around the topic.

Posted by: babaganoosh | Nov 5, 2008 8:26:13 AM

In terms of the high African American numbers for Obama, it's important to remember that 90% of blacks voters voted for Kerry and around 95% voted for Bill Clinton. As a demographic, blacks generally vote for Democrats, so Obama's number is only slightly higher. And a lot of blacks voted for Hilary Clinton over Obama in the primaries, so it's not fair to dismiss blacks as racist because they did what they usually do and voted Democratic.

Posted by: Think it through | Nov 5, 2008 8:27:47 AM

I'm still trying to figure out how Obama got to be our first "Black President". Isn't he bi-racial? And how much difference would that have made if he was wasn't bi-racial, full black? In ALL the elections I have voted in I still think we need to go with the POPULAR vote. This system sucks as to where they campaign and who they campaign to for the big numbers, not the people they will be serving. All sides, all candidates. I'm just hoping this truly is the dawn of a New Era for us all, not just the blacks everyone is touting for stepping up, what about the rest of us who have been caring and voting for years?
