Obama Weighs in on Lieberman
November 10, 2008 6:01 PM
President-elect Barack Obama has told Democratic Leader, Harry Reid, that he wants Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman to stay in the Senate Democratic caucus, according to a Senate Democratic leadership source.
Obama delivered the message in a phone call to Reid last week.
The Lieberman matter will be voted on when Senate Democrats caucus next week.
--George Stephanopoulos
UPDATE: I asked Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs if Obama thinks Lieberman should retain his committee chairmanship.
Gibbs told me, "We aren't going to referee decisions about who should or should not be a committee chair. President-elect Obama looks forward to working with any one of any party to move the country forward. We'd be happy to have Sen. Lieberman caucus with the Democrats. We don't hold any grudges."

Nice. This really sends a message to all Dems that they can do anything to hurt the party and they won't have to face any penalty. And is this fair to all the Dem senators who have worked so hard to make this happen?
What about party development? Shouldn't committee leadership positions be given to to equally qualified Democratic senators such as Hillary Clinton?

Mistake, Lieberman is a republican and will continue to act like one. He has proven to be untrustworthy and should not be caucusing with the democrats.

I would send him packing so far he would never come back.Same as picking Kerry no way>>>>>>>>>>>>

So my president-elect is turning the other cheek. Lucky break for Joe (the Backstabber). Any of you neocons got a good "messiah" joke for me?

It's refreshing to have a president who's not all about this "Either you're with me or against me" nonsense.
Posted by: clifton | Nov 10, 2008 6:32:35 PM
Eh, he votes w/ the dems most of the time anyway - use him until he's no longer useful, then let him go his own way - no chairmanship, though - sorry, Joe.

JOE NEEDS TO PUT AMERICA FIRST. IT SEEMS EVERTHING HE DOES IS FOR ISRAEL. HE JUMPS SHIP TO WHATEVER PARTY HAS ISRAELS INTEREST. ITS VERY TRUE!

Lieberman is a little snake and should be thrown out of the senate.
Posted by: JMS | Nov 10, 2008 6:59:34 PM
Lieberman is the douche bag senator from Tel Aviv and he looks and acts like Senator Palpatine. Drop him like a hot steaming turd!
Posted by: william | Nov 10, 2008 6:59:41 PM
Well done Obama.Despite all the crap remarks Joe made against him, he is willing to forgive him. That is remarkable.Hopefully Joe will learn from it and wont be a traitor going forward.

Forgive and forget. If Lieberman should get kicked out of the Democratic party for campaigning against Obama, then maybe the same could be said for Hillary? It's a fine line. Obama is willing to put politics aside in order to get things done.

Soon to be President Barack Obama is one smart cookie. He has some reason for keeping Lieberman around. Whatever it is, I trust his judgment implicitly!
Posted by: sohelpmegod | Nov 10, 2008 7:01:37 PM
Oh politically knowledgable ones...Why would President-elect Obama want to keep (Lie)berman on the Democratic team? What is this guys true value? I must be missing something here...
Posted by: CJ | Nov 10, 2008 7:02:20 PM
If the Dems had their filibuster proof margin, Joe would be gone. This is a very transparent move and you Obamabots swoon for it hook, line and sinker.

I have had enough of this dirty Jew! kick his ass out of the USA and send him back to Israel becuase thats all he cares about.

"Whatever it is, I trust his judgment implicitly!"...pretty sad statement.

What a guy.
I might have sent Joe out into outter darkness...but I also see the wisdom in forgiving him.
Joe will probably feel highly indebted.

Once a again, an excellent decision has been displayed by Obama. Remember that Liberman has stood with the democrats on all issues except the Iraq war.
Posted by: Shrimp Barnicles, NJ | Nov 10, 2008 7:06:13 PM
Obama is sticking to his message of willing to negotiate with both good and evil.Liberman showed his evil side when he sided with Mcain and chided Obama during the election campaign. But Obama is willing to forgive him with the hope that Joe wont betray his own party who helped him transform Joe liberman the ordinary man to Joe lieberman the senator.
Posted by: swingvoter1971 | Nov 10, 2008 7:07:18 PM
I assume this means that the country comes first, not dirty-party-politics-as usual. Joe votes his conscience...which is what he was elected to do! A "republic" remember? Not pure mob/majority rule. I assume there might be a handful of Republicans in Joe's district...he represents them too. We don't elect parties, we elect people (hopefully ones with integrity). GO JOE!
Posted by: Gina | Nov 10, 2008 7:09:16 PM
the reason he is keeping him around is to not anger the jew donors. joe was once a VP choice. that means he has a bunch of jew support and dollars behind him. jews want him around to sway policy in isreals favor.

@CJ "Oh politically knowledgable ones...Why would President-elect Obama want to keep (Lie)berman on the Democratic team?"
Because nothing else would devalue Lieberman's political equity than being "forgiven" like this. He'll soon become a nonentity even the GOP wouldn't want - and THAT's a bad place to be! :)
