Democrats Have Good Shot at 58 Senate Seats

November 02, 2008 10:22 AM

It's not impossible for the Democrats to get to a filibuster-proof 60 Senate seat majority on Tuesday night.

Republicans are defending at least 11 Senate seats right now that are competitive.

But I think it will be difficult for the Democrats to win nine of those seats unless we see a national wave.

My guess? Democrats have a very good chance of picking up about seven seats and getting to 58.

There might be a run-off in the state of Georgia and if Democrats can win that they can get to 59. But I think the Republican will win any run-off in Georgia.

Sixty seats would be remarkable, although we have seen something like that before back in 1980 when Ronald Reagan caught a wave at the end of the election and brought in 12 Republican senators.

HERE are more predictions from our "This Week" Roundtable.

What are yours?

For making babies, yes.. for running a country, it seems that the majority of the Reupblican party disagrees with you.

Could it be that he had to do this, because there weren't enough deaths only in Iraq to report?
Posted by: Juan | Nov 2, 2008 11:46:33 AM

Are you really serious? ONE death is too many, although you don't seem to think it's enough. What an idiot.

Posted by: benji | Nov 2, 2008 11:49:52 AM

ONE death is too many?

Do you want to do away with cars because there are 50,000 deaths from car accidents per year? Get serious. George's reporting deaths to get an emotional reaction. In your case that's exactly what he got!

juan

Are you suggesting that the media should NOT report on the deaths of our brave troops in battle?

Posted by: jock59801 | Nov 2, 2008 12:58:37 PM

This is all about George S. auditioning to be the media mouthpiece for the Obama regime. Socialist and Marxist regimes achieve and retain power by controlling the media and eliminating freedom of speech. There is no public dissent and individual dissent is weeded out. Kiss the 'flawed' constitution good bye.

When Jewish people want an outcome or someone is praised we always say "kinnahurra." I am a 76 year old Jewish woman who has believe in the philosophy of Democrats and in my early years wanted so badly that the South would leave the party so we could rid oursleves of the nasty racists within: Bilbo, Stennis, Russel Long,et.al. They have cluttered up the American landscape and caused much grief to many American Citizens who really believe in equality. I have always said that Abraham Lincoln should have freed the slaves and permitted the Confederate states to secede from the Union.I feel badly for the truth tellers in Pa. particularly Murtha who understands the racist attitudes of Joe Six Pack and his ilk. They've had their chance and beer for 8 years. It is now time for the really smart working class and middle Americans to take charge. No more doofus Presidents or make believe mavericks. Obama, Obama. YES WE CAN drive this country out of the hell hole that Republicans have put us in. Viva Main Street. Abajo con Halliburton and those millionaire CEO's who have milked us dry.
I am a retired teacher with 50 years of delightful teaching experiences with African American children and Bilingual Migrant Hispanic Children.

The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr's words have been haunting me as the election draws near. I keep hearing "little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character" and I am wondering if that day may be near.

Listening to Mr. Obama the other night I could not recall another person running for president other than John Kennedy who made me believe so much in the greatness of this country. This country needs a vision and I believe Mr. Obama has that vision for all of us.

I don't believe abortion is right, just as I don't believe our obsession with guns is correct. But, for better or worse, they are "rights" currently protected by the Constitution of this country.

I refuse to vote on one issue as we, as one people, need to move forward to tomorrow with our differences. Mr. Obama is the first person in years that I truly believe has the chance to help us recapture the United States of our parents and grandparents.

Yes, Palin has had more experience than both Obama and Biden combined, but an extremely over active sex life with multiple partners both before and after marriage does not qualify her to be VP.

I finally am proud of my country. The American people are getting it right voting in Barack Obama. He truly is a voice of change and hope. Anyhing is better than the last 8 years of Republicans. Why not come together and compromise with both parties. I think Barack Obama can do that. He truly deserves a chance. Why are people afraid to take a chance on something new and fresh and hopeful and peace minded? Why stay with what has NOT been working here in America. We the Middle class will have a chance to prosper and share in the American dream with all the millionaires. Why not?

Praying that all goes and expected and Joy to the people of the US.

Lena, you seem to forget that the damacrats have had control of both the house and the senate for the last two years. It was two years ago that gas prices began soaring, it was two years ago that the alarms started going off in the lending industry (which under the Clinton administration, the banking industry was told that ANYONE seeking a loan, regardless of race, creed, or financial situation, was to be given a loan), and it was two years ago that the housing industry started to go under (all done under damacrat control). You want to blame this nation's problems and financial short comings on one loan republican sitting in the oval office. STOP DRINKING THE RED KOO-AID HONEY, it has poison in it. If BO is voted in on Tuesday and things are really bad in two years from now, who will you blame then? Come on, they're just going to redistribute whatever you have if you are earning a paycheck (and not a governmental paycheck). Let me see if I can describe this to you in a better, more simplistic way. Remember Friday, when all of the kids went trick-or-treating? Well think of you going out and walking all those streets, and hills and going up all those steps only to come home to the fat kid living next door to you who was too lazy to go out and collect his own candy and his mother tells you that you have to give him 50% of your hard earned candy. Are you getting the picture now? Educate yourself on the real facts. That's all you have to do is find all of the sound bites from these last two weeks of BO and Biden, it's their own voices, they're not lying when they say "spread the wealth". But what should scare you more is the quote that Biden gives about the United States facing a real crisis if BO is elected President. "Mark my words . . ." Now sleep on that one.

As usual, Republicans blaming Democrats, Democrats blaming Republicans about the nations problems. Who cares how or why we got here, we need to focus on a way to get us back on track, and only one candidate has a serious, detailed plan for doing so: Obama. All Mccain can do is play on this same divisiveness, fear mongering, and hatred and keep telling you "don't vote for obama, that's why you should vote for me"....he has given us no plans, no ideas. Some of you really need to get your heads out of your a$$e$.
