Biden Counseled Hillary, Bill on State Dept. Job

December 21, 2008 9:11 AM

Sources tell me Vice President-Elect Joe Biden played a key role in convincing Sen. Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton that the secretary of state job was a good idea for her.

So I asked Biden during our exclusive interview -- did he have to convince her?

"Well, I don’t know whether I played a key role or not but I have had a longstanding relationship with Senator Clinton. She’s one of my close friends and when this came forward I did talk to her, she sought me out, I sought her out as well to assure her that this was real," Biden told me.

"There was a lot swirling around before she actually got asked and so she is an old friend, I talked with her all the time. I have continued. There hasn’t been a time since she’s been in office I haven’t – not many days go by I don’t talk to her. So it wasn’t so much convincing but they wanted to know my perspective and I gave my perspective," he said.

Funny how politics work or maybe just a new conspiracy. Hillary goes from President apparent a year ago to a position that is showing her the door. When was the last time Secretary of State was the stepping stone to the presidency? Mid 1800's? If she accomplishes any major diplomatic coups it will go down in history as Obama's feat since it would be under his administration. It's funny too that Carolyn Kennedy was the one picking the Vice President and purposely cast off Hillary from a spot where she could jump to the Presidency, and now Kennedy wants the seat so Hillary cannot continue to influence politics from a secure Senate seat. To me it seems a thought out plan to make sure Hillary's career ends here and now.

Well Hillary I would have had to think about it.

I figured Joe advised Hillary, otherwise I doubt she would have taken it. Joe can be trusted -- not so much for the rest of the Obama Chicago bunch.

I totally agree that this is a way to push out Hillary and Bill and I think it is brilliant on Obama's part. And since Caroline is a Kennedy, looks like a great second term VP choice to me.

Iam so happy that Joe Biden thought
"Hillary Rodham Clinton" would make an
excellent Secretary Of State. I can see
her representing us in a very cordual but, very firm way!

Go Hillary Go !

Hillary said she will champion women and children. I think that is an euphemism for more government control of children.

In my opinion she is a sad choice for public office given the fact her husband is most corrupt president we ever had. Not to mention the millions they (her and her husband) raked in from foreign governments.

One side note for her. Hey Hillary, it takes parents to raise children, not a village.

Well done on yet another false news article ABC NEWS. Keep lying and censoring the news! Thanks alot ABC news for censoring my posts so frequently. You are trying to control the media and the people by doing this. If a comment does not "fit in" with your articles point( and of course it must agree with you) It is censored or even taken out completely. This is sad that ABC news must do this, because they are trying to be an unbiased and valid news source.......well I have news for you guys ABC, you are just as bad as FOX news- which is the absolute worst news source known to humankind. I will not come to your low-end news source unless it is to write an article like this. You are pathetic, and should take comments OFF of your site ENTIRELY because you are manipulating news and what people are really saying. Great work geniuses.

I don't really believe she would turn down such an important position. But already the Arabs are saying they don't like it. So much for mideast peace.

Although I don't like the idea of Senator Clinton playing second best to an inexperience fool, I wish her luck at her new position. She is more than qualified for the position.

I laughed my butt off when I heard that Bill Richardson didn't get the position considering he endorsed Obama early on.

Also what I don't like is how the media is trying to pawn off her Senate seat before she is confirmed as Secretary of State.

Bad taste media!! Very bad taste!!

I am wondering if you people are going to jump in her grave that fast?

For you people who think that she isn't qualified, Obama isn't qualified to be president....but he is!

hillary clinton is unfit for any job she is corrupt just like her husband who goes pimping around the world for money diry money can you say conflict of interest hillary never ever gets a job on her own it always depends on her sugar daddy bill clinton it is a joke the smartest woman the press say they have hyped this woman all the way unreal

Best position for Senator Clinton would have been vice president. She and President-elect Obama would make a perfect team. Next she'd be president. Vice president-elect Biden, I thought would make a better Secretary of State due to his experience. Politics in Washington is all mixed up. Facts reveals the truth.

I am troubled by the growing trend of placing user comments next to news articles. On an editorial page, sure. That is where they belong. Everyone has the right to speak their piece but it isn't news. And unfortunately, some people have a hard time telling the difference.
