Biden: U.S. Economy in Danger of 'Absolutely Tanking'

December 19, 2008 3:42 PM

Vice President-Elect Joe Biden said the U.S. economy is in danger of "absolutely tanking" and will need a second stimulus package in the $600-billion to $700-billion range.

"The economy is in much worse shape than we thought it was in," Biden told me during an exclusive interview -- his first since becoming vice president-elect--  to air this Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos."

"There is no short run other than keeping the economy from absolutely tanking. That's the only short run," Biden told me.

Biden said he has canvassed  Republican and Democratic members of Congress about a second "big" and "bold" stimulus package . He said the Obama team is focused on creating jobs and spending on energy and information technology infrastructure.

"Every single person I've spoken to agrees with every major economist. There is going to be real significant investment, whether  it's $600 billion or more, or $700 billion, the clear notion is, it's a number no one thought about a year ago," he said.

The future vice president said the struggling economy will be the number one priority for the Obama Administration next year.

"The single most important thing we have to do as a new administration, to have -- to be able to have impact on all of the other  things we want to do, from foreign policy to domestic policy, is we've  got to begin to stem this bleeding here and begin to stop the loss of  jobs in the creation of jobs," he said.

In  a wide-ranging interview  to air on Sunday, Biden  gave his most extensive explanation yet on his role in the transition, and what specifically Obama wants him to do after the inauguration.

We also discussed:

- conversations he had with  Sen. Hillary Clinton  and President Bill Clinton about the State Department position;

-the future of Guantanamo Bay;

-the possible prosecution of high-ranking Bush Administration officials for their role in the prison abuse scandal;

and what he really thinks of his predecessor, Vice President Dick Cheney.

He also has some news  on the dog front ... more to come.

Ya know how comics are saying it's giong to be dry four years for material with Obama as president. He's too perfect, he's too well spoken, he's too intelligent..no material. Yeah, well, there's always Joe. Great Joe. "absolutely tanking". Great quote. I think Obama needs to put this man in a straight jacket for a few months until Obama can get the turn around started.

Would someone please put a muzzle on our new VP Biden? He just has a habit of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. Yes, I am a Republican and did not vote for Senator Obama, but the new President Elect is attempting to be "positive" and then you have his running mate doing just the opposite.

Posted by: Ron | Dec 19, 2008 4:09:28 PM

Biden is a fool of the first order, how Obama chose him for VP is beyond comprehension. I fear Biden will make some irreversible errors unless he he kept in check.

What a statement for the next VP of this country to make. Is he trying to make sure the economy tanks? What an idiot.

Posted by: billy bob | Dec 19, 2008 4:10:23 PM

but the politicians will always have a job however

Posted by: LongT | Dec 19, 2008 4:12:00 PM

Joe Biden isn't breaking any news. President Elect Obama's response to this crisis will be a major factor defining his time in office. I'm just glad an intellectual will be at the helm soon.

Posted by: Caffeine1977 | Dec 19, 2008 4:17:31 PM

Absolutely tanking...maybe, I'm sure it will happen faster if they say it often enough. You would also think that with the economy tanking, they would have stopped their raises...ehh on second thought what's another couple million a year for the people who do SOOOOOOOOOOO much for us!

Posted by: samhiguchi | Dec 19, 2008 4:18:12 PM

Why do you think Bush and company are willing to spend $700 billion to save finance institutions and the auto industry, because the US economy is in danger of "tanking". Do you really think neo-cons would be undertaking the drastic actions they are if the situation wasn't worse than they've been telling us? Biden is simply speaking the truth, plain and simple, unvarnished truth.

Posted by: JR | Dec 19, 2008 4:19:24 PM

What scares me is that these drastic actions are being performed by a group that has shown themselves to be incompetent. They've screwed up everything they've touched in 8 years, they'll screw this up too.

i look forward seeing the interview on sunday. hell, joe biden is the only reason i voted for obama, and im a republican

Posted by: Tyler | Dec 19, 2008 4:22:22 PM

Biden's statement was similar to Paulson's when the 700 billion bailout was demanded. It's certainly not the first time the alarm of a tanking economy has been sounded.

Posted by: kat | Dec 19, 2008 4:22:56 PM

We don't think Biden tells the truth enough! We feel sure that things are a lot worse than 'they' are telling us and Joe is not telling it close enough to the truth! How long are we fooling ourselves (they/them) about bailing ourselves out of all of these messes? There is no such thing as 'absolutely tanking"...we are either tanked or not tanked already! And obviously, we are 'tanked'. Joe Biden knows more about this country and other countries than the young Polo model wanna-be can begin to know. By the way, to be clear, we aren't bailing ourselves out!

We, the public, are accustomed to and in fact like a conman (the sophisticated politician), because he gives us sweet lies and offers us the moon. We do not like to know the absolute truth, because it is always bitter. Joe is telling us the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. We should, therefore, commend him for his honesty.

Posted by: narumanchi | Dec 19, 2008 4:26:26 PM

Anyone ready to vote for Bush again?

Posted by: followthelight | Dec 19, 2008 4:27:53 PM

Joe is just confirming what we all know is going to happen. It's like not talking about the elephant in the living room. Maybe if no one mentions it, it won't be a problem. We should all be talking about the failing economy and working together to do every thing possible to keep it from completely stalling.

Posted by: Judy | Dec 19, 2008 4:31:06 PM

For most of us it already has.

Posted by: jan | Dec 19, 2008 4:31:53 PM

He's not being negative. He's simply telling the truth. Hey, I prefer to be told straight up about the bad news than find out about it 4 years later, the hard way.

Posted by: steve | Dec 19, 2008 4:33:47 PM

Folks we are in trouble in this country and I don't think we have or going to have the right people to pull us out. Obama is not the right persson. We need another Bill Clinton where nearly all the people respect him. Just not enough respect for Bush or Obama.

Posted by: barefootboy | Dec 19, 2008 4:34:42 PM

Just a thought. Is Joe saying this now, so if the economy does go into a complete depression when he and Obama are in office, he can say it was not our fault? Just wondering.

Posted by: followthelight | Dec 19, 2008 4:34:55 PM

Plagiarist-Joe's brain aneurysm must be working overtime, again. He's probably just trying to set-up the massive tax increases the d-crats have planned, since, as he said, "RAISING TAXES IS PATRIOTIC".

But there are some very disturbing issues associated with the current, horribly wrong course of Washington in address the economy.

In reality, the Washington actions have set up the economy for continuing disastrous results for a long, long time. Bailout Bernanke and the feckless Fed now have accumulated over $2.2 TRILLION in debts to bailout everybody but my grandmother (her check is, apparently, in the mail) - but they REFUSE to say where the money went. (Bloomberg and other organizations have filed FOIA requests for this info- all have been turned down.)

The $700 Billion TARP has been a total failure - the money has gone principally to Wall Street pals of Paulson (who couldn't have seen that coming?) And the marxist drug-addict plans to waste another TRILLION on "public works" - most likely monuments to himself on every street corner. And, if you can't figure out who will actually pay for all this, your head must also be up bailout fantasy land.

What is the "bailout exit strategy"?

I remember when I was growing up, my uncle who was well educated and a smart business man telling me if it was in or came from Chicago, it was either tainted or was a crook. I have never been able to get that out of my head.

Posted by: barefootboy | Dec 19, 2008 4:40:52 PM

AlEX H.......If you are right about no oversight or regulations of the bailout money and where it is actually going, and Bloomberg feels the same way, are you saying no elected official of our government is honest and out for our best interests of this country?

Posted by: followthelight | Dec 19, 2008 4:44:52 PM

I'm happy to finally have a 'Straight Shooter'. I admit it may be odd to actually believe what a person in a position such as his is saying. With quotes like this, I know he's not blowing smoke up my arse.

I commend you Joe.

When President Clinton left Office in 2000, our country is in surplus. Today, out economy will become worse than we think and imagine. The wrongdoers seem to hesterically trying to solve the economy debacle; BUT DID ANYONE QUESTION WHERE DO ALL THOSE MONEY GO? American people have the right to know and should follow the money trails to find out the truth and lies of the century. This is not only a criminal case of humanity, but also a treason to our beloved country.

Posted by: Sutter197 | Dec 19, 2008 4:50:19 PM

Alex H has hit the nail squarely! We won't ever know where the $700 billion went and the next 'packages' are going because it is all words! Benefits?: To keep the masses sedated into delusional ignorance about (their) ability to 'lead' this country, to keep us from storming through the streets demanding their heads on a stick, this whole bail out language is a 'concoction'! Public works is a 'safe' excuse for the next major bailout package perpetuated by the 'marxist drug addict' and his liars-in-chiefs, Axelrod, etc. After all, it was done back 'then'...and by the way, did it work... back 'then'? Answer for yourselves, class, and do your research!
