Exclusive: Obama's Blago Report: Only One Rahm Call to Governor
December 21, 2008 9:26 AM
Sources tell me that the Obama team's review of contacts with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will show that Rahm Emanuel had only one phone conversation with Blagojevich.
The contact, described as a "pro-forma" courtesy call, came as Emanuel was named Chief of Staff for Obama. Most of the discussion concerned Emanuel's Congressional seat (which had previously been held by Blagojevich), with only a "passing reference" to the Senate vacancy, according to these sources. No deal for the Senate vacancy was discussed.
Speculation in Washington and Chicago has been swirling for a week now over what the Obama team’s report would find. Until now, the contents of that report have been kept sealed, at the request of the U.S. Attorney’s office. Last Wednesday, Obama said he found it “a little bit frustrating” that the report had not yet been released.
The sources add that the report will show Emanuel also had four phone calls with Blagojevich Chief of Staff John Harris. During those conversations, the Senate seat was discussed. The pros and cons of various candidates were reviewed, and the sources say that Emanuel repeatedly reminded Harris that Blagojevich should focus on the message the pick would send about the governor and his administration.
Sources also confirm that Emanuel made the case for picking Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett during at least one of the conversations. In the course of that conversation, Harris asked if in return for picking Jarrett, "all we get is appreciation, right?" "Right," Emanuel responded.
Bottom line: these sources say that Obama's report, which is expected to be released this week, will confirm what Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald and President-Elect Obama have said -- and what Governor Blagojevich clearly believed: that Obama officials were not open to any kind of deal for the Obama Senate seat.

This would appear to be in conflict with CBS's "Blago Case Bad News For Rahm" story.
And by the way, after watching NY's Gov. Paterson on Moyer's Journal, I'm starting to feel the democratic party has been had there as well.

Unless the press has any additional information to the contrary, leave Obama alone on the issue of Blago. The Precidency is busy as it is already. Let's focus on how to save this country from the Bush mess. There is no time for speculation...just report facts.

We have to parse every word carefully. For example, only One Rahm Call to Governor but four phone calls with Blagojevich Chief of Staff John Harris.

What exactly was the discussion about Emanuel's congressional seat? What was the favor that the Governor thought Emanuel wanted with regard to that seat?

That's not what other reports are saying, and if that's all there was to it (a "courtesy call"), then how could releasing that information interfere with the investigation? This has the potential of becoming Watergate II.

Obama had a very cozy relationship with Rod Blagojevich. Let's wait and see what more turns up. Anything can happen. I agree with MadeinUSA that his has the potential to become Watergate II.

Obama supporters need to wise up! More Chicago thuggery at play here, and the only "change" in sight is the thugs are moving to Washington! Media continues to assist in sweeping the proverbial dirt under the proverbial rug. Once Obama installs all Clinton's old cronies it will all boil down to what "is, is."

Since we know all the conversations were taped, everything is documented for investigators and will come out to the public.
Investigators have already said that Rahm and Obama are not targets of their investigation.

Sorry Jefffish again those who want Obama to fail dont get it , he did NOT have a cozy relationship with Blagojvech, for the past two years they had a pretty distant one. We in Illinois know this. He did campaign for him , in 2002 but that is because Raymond Burress his first choice didnt get the nod. Gads stop looking for what doesnt exist. Why would not have Rahm called Blago on the senate seat. ???? Look at all the behind the door chat going on over Caroline Kennedy

Obama's relationship with Blago was anything but cozy. The right wing is desperately trying to weave some sort of corruption by the Obama people into this and it just isn't going to happen. The true colors of the Republican party are shining brightly as we enter a new era of government in Washington and the country. It is clear that their sole objective will be to dishonor and bring down the new administration and Congress, any way they can. This is why they have lost so much respect and so many elections recently. Sadly, it will never change. Good riddance.

Somehow some people think that they are privy to every conversation, private or not, that every politician has. The tapes will be released in good time as this case goes forward. It is obvious that there will be a trial now. Once that happens the right wingers will once again be found with egg all over their faces. Go help Bush with his library, stay out of these matters if all you can contribute is hatred and suspicion without any evidence.

Emanuel's calls were caught on wiretap. We will then know if Obama's and Emanuel lie. I think Obama will lie cause he is a major liar. I have caught him in so many lies during the campaign and at he even lied 3 times about his own family. The media glossed over his lying as they glossed over everything else about him. I predict that Obama's Presidency will be filled with one unfavorable relevation about him after another because our corrupt media didn't do their homework on a guy we didn't know anything about. So now we will have to find out about him the hard way. It's too bad too, because our country desperately needs a President with some balls who will go in an solve our problems and not someone who will endulge in yet more corrupt betrayal. But, I am from Illinois where we are trying to get rid of our corrupt governor, Blagovich, who refuses to do the right thing for Illinois and resign. So I don't have any confidence in government and I don't pin my hopes on Obama who crawled up from the same corrupt slime pit as Blagovich, Chicago.

The title is misleading: "only one Rahm call..." Upon reading the article, it tells of other calls. Why the misleading title?
Don't "lay off Obama." We know nothing about this guy and his agenda. This story must be followed closely.

Its interesting how Stephanopolis and others whose job it is to be a journalist at the station do not report on or feel that Obama officials are not to blame for starting the entire Senate replacement issue by demanding that Valerie Jarrett be appointed within a specific period of time. This my friends, was the start of this whole mess, and Boss Obama is to blame.. The Governor pushed back.
Posted by: Democrat Lauren | Dec 21, 2008 9:32:36 AM
Okay, so once again it's confirmed that Obama's team was not bargaining for a senate appointment. What more do the conspiracy theorists need? A picture drawn for them? A personal meeting with Fitzgerald? Cheez!

Obama supporters need to wise up! More

Get over yourself! The only wising up to do is by you.
Good grief, there is not one bit of evidence, thaty Obama or anyone from his staff tried to pay the creep off.
Get a life and move on.

Ahhhh, bummer for rabid republicans hoping for an early crash and burn. sandy - Isn't our country already doing poorly enough to where you'd think you guys wouldn't wish for more just for partisan reasons?
Posted by: Susan-1 | Dec 21, 2008 9:43:01 AM
And here's another thing: The article said Emanuel made a case for Valerie Jarrett during one of the calls. Well, there is absolutely nothing illegal or unethical about that. In fact, the report says that it was made implicit that there would be no quid pro quo. And in fact, it would be normal for the outgoing Senator make a recommendation. Could there have been some subtle undertone? Well, maybe, but life is full of those, what are ya going to do, chase down every little innuendo you imagine or suspect? Get real.

The people who like to occupy the gossip mill can be annoying at times, but more often are simply amusing. They live for intrigue, back-stabbing, and rumor. Substance has no place in their lives, reality is beyond their reach...When someone produces some credible evidence that there is proof of impropriety as far as Obama and Blagojevich are concerned, it will be news. Right now, the tabloid junkies are feeding off of media speculation and garbage. Like rats in the trash.

I thought Obama said there were NO contacts. Now we see the second part of an all too common theme with Obama. First, deny - then admit some contact - and finally we will find out that, yes indeed, there were numerous contacts. If this is not an out and out lie by Mr. Obama it will soon turn into one as he tries to cover up those contacts. This is just plain stupid on Mr. Obama's part. There were conversations between his staff and the governor over who was going to be named to his senate seat. Why would he deny that? Why wouldn't he just state what should seem obvious and expected, that there were contacts but then deny any wrong doing on the bribe side.
Again, if this an example of Mr. Obama's supposed intelligence then we have all been had by an idiot. To borrow a saying that was used to describe Bush; somewhere in Africa a village is missing its idiot.
Amateur night at the white house....

None of this matters because Obama will never become President. He is not a Natural Born Citizen. His father was British and Obama was born with dual loyalties to Britain and USA. We did not fight for independence from Britain to have a Born British citizen be President. The Supreme Court will never allow Obama to be President because it is against the Constitution. All laws by Obama would be illegal. The military is instructed by the Constitution to NOT OBEY any orders from such a non president.
The military swears to uphold the Constitution and would be required to remove an usurper to the Presidency. The USA does not need such a Constitutional Crisis at this time.

Nothing here that's worthy of consideration, unless chasing after smoke and fumes is new the standard for the disillusioned.
