Rice: Pakistan Must Take Action on Mumbai Attacks
December 07, 2008 9:55 AM
Not coasting in her final days, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sat down after just returning from her trip overseas where she visited India and Pakistan following the Mumbai terror attacks.
Rice said she pushed the Pakistani government to act on finding those responsible for the attacks.
"I did say to the Pakistanis that the argument that these are non-state actors is not acceptable," Rice said, "In fact non-state actors, acting from your territory is still your responsibility."
Rice said there may have been supporters, not from the Pakistani government, but from within Pakistan that were helping the Mumbai attackers.
When I asked about a report that she has called for the Pakistanis to turn over and arrest the former head of Pakistani intelligence, Rice said, "I don’t want to get too detailed about this. This is counter-terrorism work and obviously I don't want to tip their hand or ours."
However Rice said, "This is a time Pakistan must act and they must act in concert with India, with the United States, Great Britain is helping."
Rice said she told India that they must have an "effective response."
"I understand the frustration and the anger in India," Rice said, "In fact it felt a little bit to me like the United States post- 9/11."
"But in this case, there are actions that India could take that could make the situation worse," she said, "We don't need a crisis southeast Asia."
