Obama Defends Tax Cuts in Stimulus Plan
January 11, 2009 9:01 AM
Before our exclusive interview with Barack Obama, we asked viewers what they would ask the president-elect.
We received hundreds and hundreds of pages of questions -- overwhelmingly on the economy, asking, "Can Obama truly fix the economy?"
I posed the question to the president-elect.
"I think we can fix this," Obama told me. "But it's going to take some time. It's not going to happen overnight. And what we tried to do this week was, first of all, explain where we are in the economy.
"That the jobs numbers this week were terrible. That means we've lost 2.5 million last year. That's the most since World War II. You've got another 3.4 million people who have gone from full-time work to part-time work, or want full-time work. So the underemployment rate is extremely high. And, you know, whether it's retail sales, manufacturing, all of the indicators show that we are in the worst recession since the Great Depression. And it's going to take some time to fix it. But what we tried to do was put forward a plan that says let's act boldly, let's act swiftly. Let's not only provide a jumpstart to the economy and immediately or save 3 million jobs, but let's also put a down payment on some of the structural problems that we have in our economy."
Obama said the bulk of his stimulus plan is focused on new energy, modernizing healthcare information technology, and education spending.
"The bulk of the package is direct government spending," Obama said. "And here are a few things we're going to do. We're going to alternative energy production. We are going weatherize 2 million homes. We are going to create a much more efficient energy system. And that's going to have enormous ramifications for the economy as a whole down the line. I think we can create a new green economy. And that's going to be one of the keys to the 21st Century. Health care, which is a drain on our economy, both families and businesses, we're going to make investments in information technology, update our systems work, reduce medical error, that's going to save people money. Education, we want to create a classroom for the 21st Century for every child, as well as community colleges and public universities. So we're making a series of investments that point to the future as well as just dealing with rebuilding our roads, bridges, et cetera."
Obama defended against Democratic pushback on the tax cuts inside his stimulus package and said he is open to input from Democrats and Republicans.
But, he was adamant about the stimulus package getting passed by President's Day weekend.
"The concern is that in a non-emergency situation, Congress exercises all sorts of prerogatives. They've got all sorts of procedures. Everybody wants to be heard. And I'm respectful of that. I'm coming from the United States Senate. I understand why that is important. And, you know, one of the things that we're trying to set a tone of is that, you know, Congress is a co-equal branch of government. We're not trying to jam anything down people's throats. Here's what we know though, that the sooner a recovery and reinvestment package is in place, the sooner we can start turning the economy around. We can't afford three, four, five, six more months where we're losing half a million jobs per month. And the estimates are that if we don't do anything, we could see 4 million jobs lost this year," Obama said.

It was all good until he said "we're not trying to jam anything down people's throats" and I had to laugh! You mean we are gonna have a choice...NOT!

The high cost of fuel this past year did serious damage to our economy and society. After a brief reprieve gas prices are inching back up again. Our nation should not allow other nations to have such power over us and our economy . We have so much available to us in the way of technology and free sources of energy. WE seriously need to get on with becoming an energy independent nation. We are spending billions upon billions in bail out dollars. Why not spend some of those billions in getting alternative energy projects set up. We could create clean cheap energy, millions of badly needed new green jobs and lessen our dependence on foreign oil all in one fell swoop. I just read an eye opening book by Jeff Wilson called The Manhattan Project of 2009. It would cost the equivalent of 60 cents per gallon to drive and charge an electric car.If all gasoline cars, trucks, and SUV's instead had plug-in electric drive trains, the amount of electricity needed to replace gasoline is about equal to the estimated wind energy potential of the state of North Dakota. Why don't we use some of the billions in bail out money to bail us out of our dependence on foreign oil? This past year the high cost of fuel so seriously damaged our economy and society that the ripple effects will be felt for years to come. www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com

WHAT CHANGE?
Incredible that OBAMA basically avoided any discussion or comment on Israel's massacre of more than 850 Palestinians in Gaza over the past 2 weeks.
Media coverage is sparsed and there is a great tendency to side with Israel (for obvious past atrocities commited against its people) BUT it is completely inhumane to justify the death of more than 270 children by Israel.
Our American tax dollars PAYS for the Atrocity now being committed by Israel and OBAMA is silent?
I VOTED for CHANGE but this is just another politician who talks and fails to act.
History will judge the Israelis for these crimes against humanity in the name of the so-called defense of Israel's people.
How many Israelis have being killed by the Palestinians during this time? Don't count those killed by Israeli fire.
ISRAEL CAN NOT BE GIVEN CARTE BLANCHE TO DO WHATEVER IT PLEASES TO SECURE ITS SAFETY, THERE IS NO PROPORTIONALITY IN ISRAEL'S ACTIONS. ISRAEL IS USING PAST ATROCITIES USED AGAINST IT TO JUSTIFY ITS OWN ATROCITY AGAINST THE PALESTINIANS.
WHAT CHANGE? OUR TAX DOLLARS AND THE WEAPONS THEY BUY ARE KILLING INNOCENT CHILDREN IN GAZA.

The stimulus package: Giving a tax break or lowering interest rates is not the only way to stimulate the economy. If you want people to spend money on consumer/final goods you would be better off giving a 20-40% gift discount at check-out. If you send me a check, I might buy lottery tickets, but if you give me a percent off discount card, I might just go by that over priced couch the wife wants. The banks are holding on to what they get, the stock market has moved to treasuries because, they feel that business will not have sales. We have about 7% unemployment. That means that 93% are working.
Try this get the states to declare a tax holiday (7%), send me that percent off discount card (not a check); I’ll go buy something, I’m sure a good portion of the other 93% who are still working will do the same.

I went and had my taxes done today and was told that I had to give back the stimulus money that Bush gave the americans people last year. How does that help anyone? Will Obama do the
same thing next year? If so I don't
want it. My situation is no better then it was last year. I'm 64 and struggling to keep my home out of foreclosure.
