Obama Teams Defends Panetta CIA Pick

January 05, 2009 6:50 PM

Obama officials are defending the president-elect's pick of Leon Panetta to lead the CIA.

They say that in his role as former President Bill Clinton's chief of staff and a former director of the Office of Management and Budget, Panetta gained significant intelligence experience.

Panetta also served on the Iraq Study Group.

But there are some unhappy Democratic senators tonight who say they weren't consulted on the pick.

I spoke with the incoming chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee Sen. Dianne Feinstein who told me she was "staggered" that she wasn't called.

She's not the only one.

Feinstein has a history of saying that this job should be reserved for intelligence professionals.

She isn't going so far as to say that she'll vote against Panetta's appointment, but it's clear the Obama team has some work to do here.

The issue here is the cover-up of the shoot-down of TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996. Either Panetta was involved in the coverup, or he was one of those against it. Either way, the news of this coverup will come out sometime very soon. I believe the 'anger' and 'confusion' you see right now from those in DC surrounds this very sensitive issue. I hope the doors blow wide open on this topic immediately so that everyone will know the truth.

Lately the senate seems a little full of themselves, they're starting to sound like Cheney. They want to pick and chose who will be allowed a seat on the floor and now believe they should be making appointments. Get a hold of yourselves before you turn into republicans people.

Same old same old. Everyone cannot be pleased even some liberals. Get a life. The bureaucracy has and will continue do do what they please whether it be the executive or legislative branch. You might try being more persuasive when the next election rolls around.

Panetta as CIA head?? What a joke. what qualifications does he have to lead a intelligence agency? Hahaaa... Obama is just selling out favours, he does not have a clue.

This is yet another foolish appointment.

Obama sure isn't the President of Change and not having four more years of Bush.

Instead he is the President of retreads and four more years of Clinton.

He does owe them anything he is the president he can chose whom he pleases. Every president pick his own cabinet. FOR THE PEOPLE THAT WILL NEVER BE SATISFIED NO MATTER WHO HE PICKS. GET A LIFE. MOST OF YOU ARE JUST MAD BECAUSE MCPALIN DIDN'T WIN.

Let Obama make his picks and lets judge him after 4 years . Bush had 8 years screw everything up ...

I hate to say it, but then again, it is fun; I told you so. If this guy does not have a hidden agenda, I am the Pope.

Mr. Panetta is 70. Obama has brought back from retirement the Clinton administration. What happened to "changing Washington"?

The Commerce secretary job is open. Now that Bill Richardson was forced to resign. Maybe Obama can ask Janet Reno.!!!

When the next terrorist attack occurs, I am holding Obama responsible because of his unqualified appointments in the intelligence area. This is serious business and there is no room for Obama to play politics. Obama just has no experience and doesn't understand what is needed.

Feinstein is a washed up old politics victim Democrat who has done nothing to help America in all her years in the Senate. All she can do is complain. She has knee-jerk criticized Obama on a number of decisions so far, more so than any other democrat Senator. She is still bitter that Hillary did not win and can't get over it. She needs to get on her broom and fly away.

This is Obama's first BIG mistake!!! When we are attacked again, remember Obama made this decision.....

When is Obama going to repay his debt to Oprah and appoint her as Secretary of Empire Builders?

Posted by: BeenThereDoneThat | Jan 5, 2009 9:35:59 PM

Brian...You said....."When the next terrorist attack occurs, I am holding Obama responsible because of his unqualified appointments in the intelligence area."........I agree with you.

The Senate needs to just say NO to this pick. CIA head is a job that demands throuough knowledge of the agency. Obama shows the "Illinois politics" in this pick. The country deserves better and deserves a capable CIA lead.

1st, if you are unable to write or annunciate clearly, you shouldn't be allowed to vote or speak on the issues.

2nd, if PEBO choses to tick off too many of his party, he won't get anyone to be in the cabinet, as they must all be approved by the Senate. So he DOES need to consult with them, IF he wants his pick to get voted into office...or is that too complicated an explanation for your backwoods, Race to G.E.D-educated mind to grasp? Mouth-breather...sheesh

Personally I think the pick is brilliant. The last four decades of CIA corruption is about to be weeded out by the first TRUE outsider to take the head post.

Posted by: Eric | Jan 5, 2009 10:23:39 PM

Robert Perkins -- Do you work for the CIA or something? You have no idea what the top CIA job 'demands'. I know what the American people demand -- and that is to weed out all government corruption hiding behind the protective wall of 'necessary' secrecy. The CIA has abused much of its power over the last 40 years. I welcome an outsider like Panetta to clean the place up.

Posted by: Eric | Jan 5, 2009 10:25:56 PM

No one else is qualified??

What about the Sr officers at NSA, DIA, NIS? Are ALL of these people incapable of moving up to a more senior position, simply due to tenure? Are they all incompetent, and therefore should be overlooked? Why not just tell them "Thanks for your years of service and hard work, but we think your worthless, and not worth considering..."

Need a good manager? Why not put Blago in there, he seems to be doing pretty good a scamming uh, er, running the state of Ill.!

The more resistance I see from the Washington elite (Rockefeller, Feinstein, etc), the more I KNOW this pick is perfect. The Washington elite do NOT want an outsider leafing through their secret and untoward histories. This is exactly what an outsider like Panetta will do, and he'll probably uncover a great deal of illegal activity by the CIA. I am personally looking forward to the uncovering of the CIA's role in the cover-up of the shoot-down of TWA Flight 800.

Panetta was Clinton's chief of staff when the shoot down occurred, but he resigned shortly thereafter. He must have been one of the few people against the cover-up. I glean this because there is so much resistance to his pick in Washington. Obama knows what's up and he's working for the people to hold the liars accountable.
