Gregg Withdrawal Embarrasses White House

February 12, 2009 7:18 PM

Sen. Judd Gregg, a conservative Republican from New Hampshire, admitted today he should have realized earlier that he wasn't a "good fit" to be a member of President Barack Obama's cabinet.

"For me, I just realized as these issues started to come at us, and they started to crystallize, that it really wasn't a good fit. And that I wouldn't be comfortable doing this and that it wouldn't be fair to be part of a team and not be able to be 100 percent on the team," Gregg said at a news conference in Washington, D.C. late this evening.

His decision to withdraw as Obama's nominee for commerce secretary was especially surprising since the courtship between the president and Gregg went on for several weeks.

They had even spoken together several times about their ideological differences on economic policy.

But two key issues dogged Gregg's nomination since it became public.

1) The Census. Republicans have argued the Obama administration is politicizing the 2010 Census that determines states’ representation in Congress. The White House moving to exert more direct White House control over the Census Bureau by having the director of the Census Bureau report to “White House senior management” as well as to the Commerce secretary. Gregg has opposed additional funding requested for the Census.

2) The $789.5-Billion Stimulus Bill. Republican aides tell me that Gregg was angered that Republicans were "shut out" of the process.

Gregg came to this decision to withdraw from consideration over the last couple days, informed the White House and Senate leaders, and announced his decision today.

Yet, it is an amicable split. Both men have said they admire each other. Gregg said during his news conference today that he still thinks Obama will be a good president, and that he likes his bank plan.

Obama, too, said that he admires Gregg's independence and thought it would be a plus in the cabinet.

Now, however, it's an embarrassment to both men.

White House sources tell me that another nominee for commerce secretary could be announced quite soon, maybe in the next few days.

But that candidate will be President Obama's fourth choice for commerce secretary.

So what are they planning to do? Have ACORN administer the 2010 census? Count people like they are counting votes in Minnesota? No wonder Gregg withdrew. Shame on the Obama Adminstration for politicizing the census.

The whole 2010 Census thing probably has gone too far. Gerrymandering!

Also, Gregg was left out of some critical Senate votes recently...fill in the blanks from there!

GERRYMANDERING INDEED.

Folks.... keep your eyes on what the WH is trying to do with the Cen.sus!!

"If they won't play by MY rules, I'm just gonna take my ball and GO HOME!" Gregg is going home because he feels Republicans have been "shut out"??? WHO SHUT THEM OUT??? Republicans - like Gregg himself - want to play by their own rules EVEN AFTER THEY HAVE LOST. They are like a B-Ball team that wants to keep shooting after the buzzer, and threatens to forfeit if they are not allowed to do so!!!

Obama has been in office less than a month
and the scandals keep coming. Why would any politician want to be part of this sinking administration?

Posted by: CW | Feb 12, 2009 7:39:31 PM

it's an embarrassment to both men.

Says Who? It's an embarrassment to Gregg for sure. Should be an embarrassment to The GOP. Can't be relied on GOP.

To read people here assuming upfront, long before the census actually begins, that Obama is hatching some nefarious plan to slant the thing, defies all logic and intelligence and appreciation of recent history. You want illegal gerrymandering? Come to Texas, Bush/Delay Texas. You want a census that took pains to undercount minorities and disadvantaged, see: Bush, stripping the funding to get it done right. See? That's the thing. People gave Bush a free pass as he devastated this country. Yet, they are screaming like twits within 25 days of the new administration. Your prejudice is showing. Obama is committed to an accurate count because he is NOT beholden to big money and daddy's friends. Wake up and shut up.

Did Gregg just wake up??? SHAME ON HIM!

Posted by: Howard | Feb 12, 2009 7:43:22 PM

Good for you Greg. I hope you agree with all the philosopies of the GOP.

Posted by: Churchill | Feb 12, 2009 7:43:24 PM

This is an Incompetent President and he has no comprehension as to the magnitude of the issues involved. This is embarrasing. Bring back Bush!

anne1244, I am getting a little tired of hearing you RepubliCons shout "ACORN!!!" every time something does not go your way. It is beginning to sound like the McCarthy era: "Communistic PLOT!"

If that is the limit of your intellect...

Maybe you all should all go get yourselves interred in your "communistic plot" under a shady oak tree, where you can complain about acorns falling on you for all eternity. Probably the only thing that will make you truly happy.

Gregg embarrassed the administration? I think the administration is doing a very good job of embarrassing itself!

Hey, Obama: where is that promised FIVE DAYS to examine any bill??? Why is this being rushed through with no time for examination when it's the future of our country at stake??

Never mind. We know the answer.

Posted by: trish_in_texas | Feb 12, 2009 7:46:34 PM

Obama better get his next pick for Commerce Secretary right. If he screws this one up also, that would put him in the 3 strikes and your out scenario. Has any President ever screwed up nominating a Commerce secretary so badly having to go to a THIRD stringer????

Posted by: Paula | Feb 12, 2009 7:48:31 PM

What is so wrong in having a census? I would have expected any sensible government to do this in order to budget accurately and have an adequate estimate of the population.

Are you blind to the fact that the country has a high % of illegal immigrants

I don't understand why Gredd backed out I would have thought being a key player would help shape the policies.

It is early days - I don't think the WH should be embarrassed I think it has just confimed one of the President's promise - change has indeed come to WH. Let the Clean up operation begins.

ALL CORRUPT POLITITIANS HAD BETTER PACK THEIR BAGS AND LEAVE NOW _ NO MORE ENRON. NO MORE PEN BEHIND THE EAR.

I pray the President sticks to his agenda and policies. May the Good Men and Women arise

Thank Goodness for the Internet. All these ne’er-do-wells, sour losers and haters can vent their frustrations. Please vent more and curse till you infect your children and grandchildren. History is still being taught in schools if you care to read or be educated.

Posted by: Churchill | Feb 12, 2009 7:49:26 PM

Mr President please stop getting on board people who never wanted you to become president in the first place because they will only succeed to see you fail.

Posted by: Ikechi Nwazue | Feb 12, 2009 7:51:25 PM

Did Greg really back out for the reasons he gave? I bet this guy didn't want to be vetted. Some good journalist out there....TAKE NOTE.....

Posting by CW- What scandals are you talking about ?Obama's administration is not sinking baby --it is moving straight ahead. Some Republicans are trying to stop the Obama machine but they can't so they are upset. Obama tried to extend the olive branch but now he sees that for the most part it was a waste of time. The Republicans are no longer the fat cats-but The Obama machine is in town and will not bother with those Repulicans again. He has learned fast that you cannot trust most of them. But he got that stimulus package passed without much of their support. They are mad about that too. Like I said there is a new sherrif in town-get used to it. Gregg couldn't deal with so he had go. Next!!

Jordan--you are kidding, right? You've read Pelosi's attempted "rules" of course--repealing decades of House accountability rules that negates debate or amendments by the minority party? How does that serve the American people well? No matter our political party label, Americans are inherently fair and disallowing elected voices--that isn't right. Today, she asked for a vote before anyone was allowed to read the reconciled bill--why is that okay? I'm glad Gregg made a choice to be able to look at himself in the mirror--wish Pelosi would--although, that's a pretty scary reflection....

Dude! Finding a commerce secretary seems to be harder than getting the stimilus bill sorted. Offer the position to Arnold Schwarzenegger. He would be a powerful spokesperson for bipartisanship.

Posted by: Rob | Feb 12, 2009 7:55:03 PM

Considering that Gregg fought the Clinton Admin Commerce Dept about using updated techniques to count the poor and minorities is telling. These are not exactly GOP supporters.

Makes opne wonder why Gregg put himself in for Commerce, to get control of the Census?

Posted by: Thinking | Feb 12, 2009 7:55:22 PM

With all the ObamaBillions, I like the Centralized database of everyones Health records. Now they can have the Census and your Health Records all in one nice neat Place. But they would never abuse it - NO.. Just ask that Joe the Plumber guy, that Obama supporter, she didnt illegaly dig up information on him and feed it to the Press, - Nope, didnt happen.....

I think it's an improvement. Gregg's seat is on the ballot in 2010.

This is the second time I have become disappointed in Judd Gregg. I live in New Hampshire and have followed the careers of both Judd and his father. His father was a Republican but a moderate one...he reached across the aisle…. and Judd was too ....for a while. And even though, I considered myself a Democrat (which used to be rare in NH) I voted for Judd a number of times. But then Cheney/Rove/Bush came along. I believe this was when Judd turned and became a more strident and partisan. He also began, I believe, to enjoy the trappings of power in the Senate with a Republican administration. Many of his positions became in lock step with the administration especially with Cheney’s energy policy. This was my first disappointment. But then came 2009. I thought maybe …with his acceptance of the position of Commerce Secretary that he was embracing the spirit of this election ....that of working together …..that he could be part of a vision of hope. But, I believe some of his old Republican cronies got to him. He is now too entrenched in the old partisan ways. He cannot break out of his comfort box. It is too bad. And finally, he is out of step with New Hampshire now. The state is different. We have changed, Judd, and you have not. We are looking to the future and unfortunately, Judd, you are stuck in the past. It is too bad.
