Obama Approved Special Forces Team

April 12, 2009 3:22 PM

A senior US official tells me that President Barack Obama approved a recommendation by Defense Secretary Bob Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Michael Mullen to dispatch special forces to the US scene on Friday.

These special forces were authorized to take action "in extremis" against the Somali pirates holding Maersk Captain Richard Phillips, 53, hostage on a motorized lifeboat off the coast of Somalia.

A senior official tells me that when the fourth Somali pirate was on the Bainbridge ship, Phillips moved to side of the lifeboat to relieve himself.

At that point, U.S. special forces saw their opportunity and took other three pirates out.

Captain Phillips is now safe aboard a U.S. vessel.

It's "going to make a great movie," a U.S. official adds.

Way to go President Obama.Piracy is off limits. This is the language the pirates know.

I wonder what Newt will say about this. While he was spouting off at the mouith that Obama hadn't done anything our President was in fact showing his iron fist to the pirates. Obama will uphold his commitment to protect our country. However, I am sure the right wingers will spin this as a sign that he is somehow beholden to terrorists. I am glad most Americans see them as a bitter and increasingly irrelevant lot.

So he did what all the "neocons" said he should do.

Good job to all involved. Awesome, now to the end result and move onward. Again, thank you for a great job all the way around.

I am really proud of our military and the president. I wonder what the Republicans will do now that their Jimmy Carter/Iran crisis spin blew up in their face. One thing the country saw throughout the campaign as he interviewed for the job was a man that was cool under fire and made good choces among his available options. Keep it up Mr. President. You continue to make us proud.

old Newt was worried about all the talk about the Obama's dog!

Posted by: rudy | Apr 12, 2009 3:55:35 PM

This could have been resolved days ago by a decisive President.

Great Job Pres. O
Eager to hear what the extreme intolerant right will say about this.

Posted by: nat | Apr 12, 2009 3:59:01 PM

Hmmm, if you listened to the right wing nut jobs up here you'd think Obama wasn't interested in this issue.

Posted by: Eric | Apr 12, 2009 3:59:18 PM

did he authorize them to shoot, or just be on scene? My guess just be on scene, but since a good result will not punish them for doing their job.(unlike Bush and those Texas border guards)

The repubs will say and do anything to destroy this presidency in hopes that they would regain power. Dream ON you repubs for you have shown what dastardly cowards you are, and how disloyal you are to seek the destruction of a democratically elected government for your own failed ends. when you have the likes of Palin, Rove, Cheney, Limbaugh, coulter, Jindal, Steele and Graham, what do you expect?? The American people have seen what the republicans truly are about and will reject and forsake them in larger numbers in the future.

Posted by: Karen | Apr 12, 2009 4:01:00 PM

I guess you think that the president was waiting on you to tell him when to act on this situation? You know that he's been working on it since he found out that there was an American being held! The president has done a real good job so far!

Posted by: rudy | Apr 12, 2009 4:01:45 PM

Looks like all the right-wing talkers have egg on their faces right now. Will it stop them? Will any of them issue an apology or admit they were wrong and spoke with no knowledge of what was going on? Nope. They'll just move on to their next mindless attempt to damage America and this president. Way to go Obama.

Posted by: dantheguy9 | Apr 12, 2009 4:02:06 PM

how about doing something so this doesn't happen again?

Posted by: big al | Apr 12, 2009 4:02:21 PM

Great job by the president, everytime ole Newt or Rush open their mouths, they insert their feet.

WTG Mr. President and the US Navy

Posted by: June in Oregon | Apr 12, 2009 4:04:34 PM

This shows America's strength that was already in place thanks to the Bush Administration. Obama will hopefully take from this that he authorized use of force that was present only because an american military was so well funded, trained and already in position to do such an effective job.

I hope an pray Obama will reconsider his liberal approach in weakening our strategic military force and sacraficing American lives. Unfortuanately, Obama is so very stupid and uninformed, that he will probably weaken us to the point that pirates could operate effectively off of the American coast.

No boxcar he did not do what the "neocons" said he should do. He did what the POTUS should do, his job.

Im not an Obama fan, but I give full credit, nice work, I was looking at this point as one of those that would be a defining moment, if it went the wrong way, it would haunt us for years in respect to how some decide to engage our ships. Some may say that all on the right are wishing for Obama to fail, but I cannot dissagree more, I was rooting for him to do just what he did, give the green light to do what needed to be done. I am proud, now I think this will carry a lot of weight moving forward in situations like this. Thats what Seals are for, and everyone involved did their jobs.

Posted by: matt | Apr 12, 2009 4:07:27 PM

NortonPete: You're yet another person who has no idea what he's talking about. Seems to me that a decisive president is on the job, and one who knows that merely being decisive is only half the battle. One also has to be prudent. The bottom line is, this situation was handled well, and our man is alive. How can you try to throw water on that based on an assumption for which you have no evidence?

Posted by: dantheguy9 | Apr 12, 2009 4:07:55 PM

Bravo. Good for President Obama for taking real action against these pirates and all the best to the brave captain and crew of this ship. Smart, well organized forceful response to terrorists is the sinlge most effective deterrent to jihad.

Guess the '3 AM Phone Call' is no longer an issue. Great job!

Posted by: Keven Bennett | Apr 12, 2009 4:08:35 PM

Just like the right wingers to try and use anything to defame the president...I have a hard time believing these are grown men!!

Posted by: amber | Apr 12, 2009 4:09:12 PM

IN YOUR FACE NEWT

Posted by: scottie | Apr 12, 2009 4:10:39 PM

Good for Obama. Actually, I would be shocked if any president wouldn't have done the same thing. After all, that is his and the special forces job. I never thought the navy was handcuffed, I just felt Obama could have made more of a statement than "the navy is handling it, let's talk about housing"
