Obama's Press Conference

April 29, 2009 10:17 PM

Ap_obama_presser_5_090429_wmain The questions at tonight's 100 Days press conference covered the waterfront -- everything from the state secrets act to the unemployment rate among African American men to securing Pakistan's nuclear arsenal -- and President Obama demonstrated that he was fully on top of his brief.

His energy may have been a little low at the top, but the president picked up steam over the course of the hour and turned just about every answer to his core themes:  My administration inherited a mess.  We're starting to clean it up.  What you don't like is not my fault.   And above all, be patient.

BEST EXCHANGE -- Jeff Zeleny scored the best question of the night when he asked Obama to say
what has "surprised…enchanted…troubled…and humbled" him most in these first 100 days.  It would have been easy to brush off with a few vague generalities.  But Obama decided to play along in a mini-masterpiece of improvisational message-making.  Taking each idea in turn, the President managed to praise the military with misty-eyes, slam bankers with a laugh, remind people that he was dealt a bad hand, and make a cheerful plea for persistence.

BIGGEST PUNTS -- Obama made it pretty clear that he was in no hurry to tackle immigration reform
or to reinforce Roe v. Wade with the "Freedom of Choice" Act.   That may get him some angry phone calls from NARAL and the Hispanic Caucus, but most voters will buy his candid explanation: I've got plenty else to worry about right now.

DAMAGE CONTROL -- In our latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, the only Obama agenda item that doesn't get majority support  is the bailout of the Big 3 automakers.  No wonder the president was so sensitive to any suggestion that he relished his role as shareholder-in-chief, repeating several times that he wants to get out of the banking, insurance and auto business as quickly as possible.  He knows their problems will soon be his problems.  He also knows that getting out will be much harder than getting in.

READING BETWEEN THE LINES -- On Pakistan, Obama had high praise for the Army and fairly harsh criticism of the civilian government.  Wonder how that will echo in Islamabad...

"I WON" MOMENT --   Obama: "if that is how bipartisanship is defined, a situation in which basically, wherever there are philosophical differences, I have to simply go along with ideas that have been rejected by the American people in a historic election, you know, we're probably not going to make progress."

I am 61 years old. I have never been more impressed with a presidential news conference than this one. I doubt I will benefit persoanally by anything he is going to do, but I don't think any president is making the best decisions and listening to everyone better than he is. The critics including Danforth need to give a better solution if they are going to disagree. I pray that the second worst congress than the last one start to do their part to compromise and solve the problems. I do agree that more attention needs to be paid to SS, but am sure Obama will get to that. My only regret is that no one listens to me and that I will never be one of the 10 regular Americans mail that Obama reviews each day will be from me, but I had the same problem with Hilary Clinton. Life goes on. Peace!!!

I will also say that I was a champion of George Stephanophalous when he worked for Clinton but as a news man he is way to sensationalist which is why I am not a champion of Barbara Walters. He would be a far better reporter if he left his opinion out of it. Peace!!! So much for a news organization run by the corporate world. They should have more trust in the people to report real news and the people who tune in.

President Barack Hussein Obama will go down as the best president the United States of America would ever have..bar none! He listens to the experts before making a decision. Its easy for him to change course if something is not working. Its easy for him to say I was wrong("I screwed up"). He is a master diplomat. He cares about the poor and middle class and by extension all Americans. The world is beginning to respect America again and he deserves all the credit for that. Most Americans can see his heart..the guy is sincere! America really cannot ask for anything more from a president! I am proud of my president..whenever the president speaks he makes me proud to be an American..I am currently overseas..have been for 2 years and have traveled to a few countries and everyone is excited about Obama..you would think that he is their president. WHAT A MAN!

the border has a direct, verifiable impact not just on our health (swine flu epidemic, salmonella, etc) but on our security (kidnappings, gangs, drugs, and possible terrorist infiltration.) Yet Obama refuses, like Bush, to do anything about it except rhetoric. I realize the likely strategy is based on future voters and a natural empathy for illegal aliens (like his dear aunty) but so much damage is being caused by the open borders that something needs to be done. Even Mexico attempts to seal its border in the south. Yet we do nothing as virulent diseases and criminals come across. Amazing. Why can't "The One" address this problem? How many kidnappings or diseases will it take?

Good move Arlen Specter! I am waiting for the other wise Republicans to make a move..don't allow foolish pride to keep you attached to the party of voodoo economics and unjustified wars..party of the rich and those who pretend to be rich. Party whose leadership are political comedians like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannitty,Glen Beck, Bull O'Reilly and Ann Coulter. People have seen through the sheninigans of these circus clowns. I alway told people the reason why fox news is #1 in the evening is because most Americans love to laugh in the evening around dinner and late at night and fox provides humor..CNN and MSNBC are more serious news. Its obvious people don't take these jokers seriously..look how many people defected from the Republican party and voted for Obama..now Arlen Specter has left and I suspect that more wants to leave but some are to proud and ashamed to break ranks. The Republican party is done..caput, patay..its over! Look at the Republican convention..they made fun of community organizers..can you imagine that! and 95% of the attendees were white and the other 5% wished they were white..now they give Steele leadership to sugar coat but Americans have seen through the Republican mess. The Democrat convention were diversified..Whites, Blacks, Asians, hispanics and others..now go figure! Obama is simply magnificent!

Excellent press conference president Obama! You are simply the best! Genuine and sincere president..we haven't had one like that in a long time! God bless president Barack Obama and God bless America!

Ed:"the border has a direct, verifiable impact not just on our health (swine flu epidemic, salmonella, etc) but on our security (kidnappings, gangs, drugs, and possible terrorist infiltration.) Yet Obama refuses, like Bush, to do anything about it except rhetoric."

Bush dispatched the National Guard to the border until near the end of his term, when the Border Patrol was staffed up to the point he withdrew them. Just recently Obama has committed another 500 specialists (such as dog teams) to the border. Millions have and still are being spent extending border fencing and barricades. Your ignorance of these far-more-than-nothing measures really undercuts your argument.

My first impression while watching the press conference was that it went very well but when one analyzes the answers one begins to wonder whether he is getting the best advice and whether there is a certain depth in his understanding of the issues involved. I particularly did not like his simple minded response on the looming swine flu pandemic which if not controlled with an iron hand could spread rapidly to thousands of people. Obama seems to be asking congress for a few billion but did not seem to take the hard decisions like closing the border and travel to and from Mexico for even 2 days to take stock of the situation and to track the flow of infection. His naive solution of hand washing firstly does not merit the billions he is requesting congress for but also hand washing if done improperly (without an antiviral or antibacterial ingredient) and hastily does not achieve the purpose of or the desired goal of washing off most of the virus on the hands. He made no mention of masks or cleaning surfaces with disinfectants. Hopefully this swine flu scare will disappear soon but if not each infected person with or without symptoms entering the country has the almost same level of risk/danger as a terrorist bringing down a plane.

All the these question have all been ask before ..It was the same things that he's been saying for months and months nothing new...If Obama could really be ask a real question he wouldn't know what the hell he was talking about..Obama doesn't know anything without someone telling him what to say ...It was the most boring thing i think i have ever listen to..Please someone ask him a tuff question like why did you have to have a photo op that cost over 322.000 dollards and scared the crap out of everyone in NY...Oh thats right he didn't know anything about it..As he knows nothing about anything...And thats proof that he doesn't ...

Pcc:"Please someone ask him a tuff question like why did you have to have a photo op that cost over 322.000 dollards and scared the crap out of everyone in NY"

Most people don't care about a military SNAFU or how they spent an insignificant amount of their mandatory pilot hours budget. Also, most of the reporters are smart enough not to ask a question that has already been thoroughly answered. Fine, you don't like his answer - it's not like he's going to change it just because you asked again. The reporter would just look pathetically ill informed about recent statements.

Uhh, Georgie, your nose is lookin' a little brown.

Posted by: tin can | Apr 29, 2009 11:23:36 PM

Oh give me a break Obama has never been ask anything that he doesn't already know whats going to be ask of him...It all a game to Obama do not let them ask anything that i may have to answer...Obama didn't even answer most of what he was ask tonight danced all around it and said nothing as he alway ways does....And him making fun of the tea partys is way out of line Obama is nothing but a joke and most American's are starting to see right through him and he's to stupid to even know it...If he really thinks that the American people are going to keep falling for his smiles and speeches he's out of his mind....

Well, I haven't been a fan of Mr. Obama, and I disagree with much he hopes to accomplish.

However, during parts of the the news conference, I found his reasoning interesting and logical. He hasn't won me over, but I am reassured that he realizes the immense complexity of being president, and his own limitations in performing his duties. This is not a slam on him, very few men, especially at his age, are completely up to the task. He will learn, and become wiser.

It was the first indication of some class when he praised Mr. Bush for having taken the actions to make sure sufficient doses of flu medicine are available. He should continue in that vein. Even thought he has fundamental disagreements with Mr. Bush, it improve his own stature to recognize that a lot of things were done right under Mr. Bush.

Let's hope he continues to appreciate that it was easier to criticize a president than it is to be one. If so, his performance will continue to improve.

Dont send your kids to school or go to work, but lets not close the Mexican border its 'too late' to stop the spread of the pandemic THAT way. Whats up with that?

Listen guys let me explain something else to you that Obama said in his speech. He said "I dont want to run auto companies" what he means is he knows he cannot regulate or control banks & huge auto companies nor their managers. No way. He cant stop corporate from hedging numbers, changing spreadsheets & stop big companies or banks from padding or skewing their numbers! They cant be regulated. The question? Why didnt he already know this or did he lie to support his partys objectives at our expense?

closing the Mexican border is a GREAT idea but it would upset the leadership of Mexico! We wouldnt want that wiould we??? Lets just let the infected cross the border by the thousands daily (along with drugs and cheaply made goods)!!!! That wouldnt help at all would it! Its like saying if a person is a junkie or drunk already why take away their drugs and booze. Imaghine if hospitals said lets not quarantine the infected, lets just let them roam free. This isnt chicken pox Mr. Obama its a flu pandemic!

My husband and I didn't watch. We figured it would be the same gush and flow and gush that accompanies anything Obama says or does. After 100 days of soaring rhetoric and out of control spending, little fiscal honesty, a huge govt grab for controls over industry, finance and now perhaps newspapers, Obama's speeches ring false.

Posted by: Pam | Apr 29, 2009 11:55:55 PM

Best answer was to the "surprised, humbled, enchanted, etc" question. You could tell that Obama was really thinking about what he was saying.

Posted by: Sara | Apr 29, 2009 11:55:57 PM

This was absolutely boring , nobody asked a real question ,like how the hell are we going to pay for this crazy budget that we passed today . no pork yeah right!!
And then the waste of money on the fly over of New York
I am tiered of this love fest from the left wing media, when are you going to wake up and start asking questions that have substance I guess that is why We watch FOX news and not this left wing dribble that just makes me puke You guys make him look like a God , I wonder when he starts walking on water!!

I have to ask. Do some of the comments here sound like they come from party central? Honestly, I wonder if there's an organized effort to get Obama loyalists lined up to spread the joy on the internet. After 100 days, I'm probably becoming paranoid.

Posted by: Pam | Apr 30, 2009 12:00:52 AM

Stanley apparently knows the Obama cult secret handshake. And he is deeply in love. . . with love. Obama, a man without peers . . .in the whole world. . .in all of history.

Posted by: flopez111 | Apr 30, 2009 12:01:17 AM

Pam,
There are people who hate Obama and there are people who love him. Choose ye this day! Hope you are not a hater..he is our president and I'm gonna support him because I know that he is genuine and sincere..the complete opposite of George I never made a mistake Bush! Obama is a breath of fresh air after eight years putrefying so called leadership.

Posted by: Stanley | Apr 30, 2009 12:12:55 AM

It was so depressing that I watched American Iodel instead. The best thing Obama has done is keep his mouth shut while the stock market is open. The worst thing he has done is let mama Nancy tell him what to do.

Posted by: wayne | Apr 30, 2009 12:15:07 AM

MS long beach'
Fox news is comedy central! Most Americans tune in to laugh at the losers..do you honestly take Sean Hannitty and Bill O'Reilly seriously? They support of party of voodoo economics and unjustified wars. Republicans are largely responsible for horse excrement of economy we are experiencing now. How come you guys did not criticize George Bush for some of the nonsense he did! Arlen Specter has left and rightly so and more a posturing to do the same.. I say "GO FOR IT".

Posted by: Stanley | Apr 30, 2009 12:20:16 AM

Obama is a great actor. I don't think he has a clue what he is talking about. Still waiting for his school transcripts.

Posted by: soconfused | Apr 30, 2009 12:21:51 AM

There's a lot i could say about this guy. I'll keep it simple...the down-turn is apparently bottoming, turing around, and many of the banks want to repay the TARP money. If this is indeed the case, and almost all of the TARP money has NOT been spent yet...i wonder if we'll get our TARP money back...or will it become: the "crisis to pay for 2nd rate industry insider kickbacks" plan

Posted by: hmm..... | Apr 30, 2009 12:22:38 AM

Stanley, when has Obama admitted to a mistake? Anything goes wrong it is immediately Bush's fault. I'm surprised the fiasco with AF1 isn't Bush's fault yet.
