Axelrod Blasts Ahmadinejad's 'Bloviations'
June 28, 2009 9:04 AM
White House senior adviser David Axelrod has raised the stakes with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, striking back at the Iranian president's the accusation that the U.S. is meddling in Iran's affairs.
Axelrod called the comments "bloviations" and suggested Ahmadinejad is trying to create "political diversions."
In my interview on this week he also made it clear that the invitation to Iran to engage in negotiations was still open and that the US would meet with the Iranians in Paris.
"Understand it's an invitation, it is not a reward," Axelrod told me, "We are not looking to reward Iran, we're looking to the nations of the P5, the P-5 plus 1, they want to sit down and talk to Iranians and offer them two paths. And one brings them back into the community of nations and the other has some very stark consequences." --George Stephanopoulos

this makes me feel much better about the invite. I'm a Obama fan but this annoyed me about the July 4th invite. Has that been canceled yet with A's recent behavior. Posted by: claire | Jun 28, 2009 9:26:45 AM as much as i would want, diplomacy will not work with Ahmadinejad. We now can see that he only cares about power for himself and he doesnt care for his people. The only thing he would accept in diplomacy is something that would benefit him. Posted by: adam | Jun 28, 2009 10:20:43 AM In my view USA is not on any moral high ground. Let the five permanent members of United Nations come together and dismantle all their arsenal of nuclear weapons (and other biological weapons),and then ask others to follow suit in tandem. Who are we to hold on to our own WMDs and ask others to destroy theirs, so that they could be permanently blackmailed by us? Posted by: narumanchi | Jun 28, 2009 10:37:56 AM A weak President Obama brought this mess on. Had he spoken out stronger immediately when people were being denied their vote we would not be in this place now. Obama is totally impotent and a madman took advantage of him. Posted by: Doreen | Jun 28, 2009 10:54:07 AM Mr. Axelrod, Most americans are sick and tired of paying for illegal aliens health care! Also, I do not believe in this global warming thing. I live in Kansas, am 57 years old, and as long as I can remember back to childhood the weather has been the same. winter-cold, spring and fall-medium temp, summer-hot. Where is your proof of global warming! Posted by: Tom S. | Jun 28, 2009 11:00:03 AM Doreen: Really? How would that have helped? All Iran would have done is crack down sooner, and more forcefully, by aligning the protesters with their enemy the U.S. They're more concerned with staying in power than world opinion, and they know that our armed forces are stretched way too thin to do anything about it anyway, which is thanks to President G.W. Bush. Posted by: Nick B | Jun 28, 2009 11:02:50 AM Tom S: It's in the whole globe, not in any single person's experiences, as inaccurate as those may be. Environmentalists didn't invent it out of whole cloth, it came from large amounts of data that scientists are collecting all over the world. Posted by: Nick B | Jun 28, 2009 11:06:52 AM I agree, Obama is a weak President and has brought this on himself. Remember, Obama wanted to "sip" tea with Ahmadinejad. I voted for Obama, but hope and pray he will not be re-elected in 2012. This Democrat will NEVER vote for Obama again. He continues to personify the "empty suit, no substance" President. I'm embarrassed by him and his lying and deceit. Posted by: dk | Jun 28, 2009 11:06:58 AM Honestly there is nothing President Obama can do as this is internally an Iranian effort and problem. However, after viewing the actions of the Iranian Government and seeing how brutal they really are I sincerely hope he is alot more cautious about the Trust issue going forward with them. He has in my opinion been naive on who they really are. Well now he has pictures and live shots of the real deal. Posted by: Steve | Jun 28, 2009 11:12:26 AM this is what abc "news" and g. steph. want us to remember from the way that g. steph. curtly and freq. attempted to change the subject and interrupt mr. axelrod? that mr. axelrod used one word, and then attempted to get back to issues he clearly wanted to detail, much to (it appeared) g. steph's chagrin. i think abcnews, and particularly g. steph. are drama junkies, in that they attempt to create even more tension and drama, by magnifying a particular word rather than presenting info. for the american people and allowing them to decide what they want to pay attention to. i loved the way mr. axelrod held his own, despite freq. interruptions and subject changes by g. steph. Posted by: Tom M. Lester | Jun 28, 2009 11:17:22 AM claire:"I'm a Obama fan but this annoyed me about the July 4th invite. Has that been canceled yet" Yes, all invitation were rescinded in the middle of last week. That was pretty much a given, the only question was if they were going to wait a bit more for a time when they could make a point doing it. Posted by: jhw539 | Jun 28, 2009 11:21:24 AM Where you guys seen weakness is where the intelligent people see brillance? Ask yourself would you have supported bombing Iran a month ago. If you were reasonable, you would have said no. Now that the US did not antagonize Iran and the world sees that we were very fair and balanced in this process, it strengthens our hand dramatically. No longer are we the irresponsible, bellicose war monger but we are reasonable and respectable people. Posted by: Rob K | Jun 28, 2009 11:35:25 AM The US just can't keep its mouth shut. Posted by: CC | Jun 28, 2009 11:50:26 AM dk said, "I agree, Obama is a weak President and has brought this on himself." What, exactly, did he 'bring on himself'? What's your point? Posted by: SearamblerOne | Jun 28, 2009 11:53:00 AM Part of the reason that Iran cracked down so harshly on the protesters was because of the Iran resolution passed in the house 405-1. Way to go congress folks. We just can't stop our meddling. Iran will have a revolution, only it will be up to the people of Iran to do so. Posted by: Huh | Jun 28, 2009 11:54:44 AM narumanchi: I disagree whole heartedly with you. I believe the US does maintain the moral high ground. The fact that the US has NOT used WMD against an enemy since WW2 (and against an enemy that used WMD . . . look it up) says alot about our character. Quite frankly, many other nations in the World having the same military advantage would have used them to commit terrible crimes against the world. I'm not saying the US is perfect in this matter but compared to the alternative . . . give me a brteak. Posted by: Scott_mich | Jun 28, 2009 12:18:43 PM This is in NO way Pres. Obama's 'fault' give me a break. If anything, he has brought hope to the people of Iran. "Yes We Can" has been proven and Yes They Can. Posted by: Ugh | Jun 28, 2009 12:26:04 PM Diplomacy makes President Obama weak? You've got to be kidding me! Dropping bombs as a way of "negotiating" without trying other means is what makes us weak. Actually, I'm a registered Independent and I didn't vote for him, but I have to say the man is a brilliant communicator and thinker. Posted by: Von | Jun 28, 2009 12:43:07 PM narumanchi: Interesting point. It's called "power." The world is not a nice plce. America isn't perfect. BUT, we do have the best thing going as far as overall freedoms. Posted by: HA! | Jun 28, 2009 12:45:28 PM this guy is a joke, he has no real power, he is a puppet for the all powerful Ayatollahs and he has a serious case of little man sydrome. he and that little nut job in North Korea need to squashed like the little pesky bugs they are. Posted by: penny green | Jun 28, 2009 1:39:07 PM Ahmadinejad is grasping at straws since he uprising has alarmed both him and the Ayatollahs. And just what did Obama bring on himself? Can you imagine how much Ahma... would be foaming at the mouth if the US had interfered in some way. Just what could the US have done openly? (I´m mever sure about just what the CIA might be doing Posted by: BachisBest | Jun 28, 2009 2:41:01 PM Has Axelrod had any foriegn policy experience? Just wondering if we have anyone in the Whitehouse that has the experience to deal with these crazies. Posted by: Ray | Jun 28, 2009 2:58:52 PM For all of you who asked...yes, President Obama recinded his 4th of July invitation. These problems are not his fault...you have got to be kidding. These problams are the same as they always were...government control of the people. I think many of the young people listened to Obama's speech and wants to be friends with America. That is a good sign as sooner or later, they will win and I praise them for all they are doing to let Ahmadijon know they are not satisfied with the status quo. It is a start and I pray for all of them. Posted by: talmag | Jun 28, 2009 3:11:43 PM Mr. Axelrod did not really answer any of your questions! Ask him why the unions and Congressional members would not pay any taxes on their health care, while all of the rest of us would??? The Cap and Trade and Health Care bills are as much garbage as the stimulus package. Look at the waste, rip-offs being hidden in the bills, and it stinks. Why would they quickly cram so much down our throats, unless they want to get it all passed before we wake up and see what they have done. Czars, overspending, lieing, Do they really think we are not watching? Do they really think they can keep doing this, totally partisan, and no one will see? Posted by: GammySparkles | Jun 28, 2009 6:01:00 PM To the idiots thinking democracy can ride to Iran (and Iraq) on a bomb, please wake up. The only thing I regret Obama doing is caving in to you whiners and speaking too loudly about what's going on in Iran. The seed of democracy is germinating again in Iraq. We should offer support, but leave it to the Iranians to make it happen. Maybe not next month, but next election cycle there could be a real change. As much as I wished the UN to come save us in when GW stole his election (TWICE) the actual thought is ridiculous. The actual fact is, I suspect ahmadinejad actually probably won the election. But it won't happen again if America and other nations play their cards right. Posted by: VOR | Jun 28, 2009 6:27:13 PM Post a comment

Obama gave Ahmadinhad and the Clerics enough rope to hang themselve. Now nearly 50% of their own population is against their own establishment and allows us a much better advantage if we were to ever attack Iran.
I think more people do understand the viciousness of the Iranian regime and the apologists case has been weakened dramatically.
So for those that are a bit savy and understand how these situations work out, it truly is brilliant what Obama has done albeit it may be frustrating for the simple minded.
AmaDingDong is looking for reaction and the US is dumb enough to give it to him, and so the whole dumb show plays on with both parties acting like morons.
His goal is to show the world that the Iranian people are against thier own govenment. Not us. We can't change anything over there and we have no plan to do so. Put on your thinking caps guys and look at the bigger picture, if you can.
covertly!)
This is so terribly sad. Stripping our nation of constitutional rights, overspending, neutering our national security. This is a SHAME!
Everything Obama and America has done in the last 7 months has helped create the environment for this to take place in Iran. Now america looks at Iran as a possible Egypt or Lebanon. Iran has so much potential.
