Obama's Poll Numbers Falling to Earth?
June 22, 2009 7:01 PM
President Barack Obama is still a little bit more popular than most presidents at this stage of his presidency. But when it comes to the economy -- his numbers are slipping a bit.
According to the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll, 52 percent of the public now think Obama's signature stimulus plan is helping the economy. That's down from 59 percent in April.
The president has also seen his numbers slide on the key question of whether the country is going in the right direction.
Since the 2008 election those right track numbers skyrocketed. In April about 50 percent of the public thought the country was on the right track -- but that number has slipped back to 47 percent.
It's the first time Obama's right track numbers have gone down since the election. It's all about the economy, high unemployment and real concerns about the growing deficit.
The ABC/Post poll also found that only 45 percent support the bailout of the automakers -- an issue that seems to have crystallized concerns about government overreach.
Obama's big advantage? The other side isn't any better off.
The president holds a 20 point advantage over the Republicans on every major issue and only 36 percent of the public has a favorable view of the GOP right now. That's about a 25 year low.

In my small part of the US, we have 13.9% unemployment. Yes his numbers are going down. Where are the 3 million jobs he promised?

Better late than never, some are slow to catch on.

Obama has no chance, the democrats are running everything and at the end of the day we will all lose. As for Obama he will blame everyone else. Never take blame or responsibility - did one democrat take any blame for what has happened to our country and they were in charge of both houses. NO

How can one halt outsourcing?

Some ARE slow to catch on. They will when they're taxes sky rocket next year.

The halo on the messiah is slipping. Maybe some of the "anti-Bush" voters are now realizing that what they got was a bag of nothing.

His poll numbers would be expected to drop due to the recession and his necessary involvement in the messy business of getting his agenda in place. Democrats will loose seats in the House in 2010 and hold or add 1 or 2 in the Senate in the midterms - as is normal for midterm elections.
Obama will be judged on the economy in 2012.

As reality sets in, Obama's numbers will fall. When people realize what a disaster he has created with his monstrous deficits, and the fact that in 10 yrs, 82% of the budget will be debt service and entitlements, he will lose Congress and then the net Presidential election. I just hope we can limit the damage before he is gone.

I doubt it's a bag of nothing. All you're seeing now is the typical impatience from people who want Rome rebuilt in a day. Beyonmd that, this "bag of nothing" is a tremendous improvement over the last bag, left on the porch, on fire, and full of the same cr- ap one associates with a Halloween prank.

What a laugh! Where are the numbers for the GOP, or Congress, Or the Press as far as that goes.

old citizen...at some point, you're going to have to quit blaming Bush and Rush. They have nothing to do with Obama's job performance.

Uh oh, the Kool-Aid buzz is starting to wear off.
According to Real Clear Politics, poll numbers for Congress, led by the PARTY OF YES, are also dropping.
Tends to happen when you have over 25 million unemployed/underemployed people who are realizing that the 3 million jobs promised by Obama and Congress aren't materializing, despite all the lofty rhetoric and reckless deficit spending. Rhetoric doesn't pay the bills once unemployment insurance runs out.

Ever notice that only neo-cons call Obama "Messiah" or talk about this swearing in as a "coronation", sounds a lot like wishful thing, but I guess it's understandable after the last 14 years of their leaders.

JR: "Ever notice that only neo-cons call Obama "Messiah"..."
Not true.
On February 24, 2008, Louis Farrakhan made the following remarks while addressing a large crowd at Nation of Islam Saviour's Day 2008: "You are the instruments that God is going to use to bring about universal change, and that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn't care anything about. That's a sign. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking. Brothers and sisters, Barack Obama to me, is a herald of the Messiah. Barack Obama is like the trumpet that alerts you something new, something better is on the way."
To the best of my knowledge, Farrakhan is not a neo-con.

Rasmussen poll: for the second week in a row the Republicans and the Democrats are tied in a generic Congressional Poll. Also from Rasmussen: Voters now trust Republicans more than Democrats on six out of 10 key issues, including the top issue of the economy.
I trust Rasmussen numbers more than George's since he's a hack (and Rasmussen is left leaning -- he admits it).

larry, unlike the GOP, the Dems understand that you can't spend money unless you make it. And the only way governments can make money is through taxation.
A big part of the mess we're in right now was because the Bush administration kept spending money like there was no limit, while -- at the same time -- pushing through tax cuts for the wealthy.
So you can fund programs like extensions of unemployment insurance, food-stamps, Medicaid, etc., or you can let those people die. (My guess, if you have a job, YOU'D rather just let people die than see your taxes go up a bit.) And Obama has repeatedly said that he intends to raise taxes on the wealthy (basically eliminating Bush's tax cuts) not those of us who are poor working stiffs.
Yes, I, too, am concerned about all the deficit spending. Yet, I can see where a lot of it is necessary. Our "fiscal policies" over the past decade are finally catching up to us, and it's now time to "pay the piper."
I'm still trying to figure out the whole GM bail-out deal. I can't understand how anybody, let alone highly trained and experienced economists, ever thought a bail-out was ultimately going to keep GM out of bankruptcy. We could have saved ourselves a whole lot there.
But what a lot of people in this country don't seem to understand is that the average American doesn't have enough in savings to make it through this economic mess. Obama is attempting to help keep them going until the economy rebounds.
I don't particularly enjoy paying taxes any more than I think the next guy does. But I also understand that I have a responsibility to help pay my fair share. We've gotten away with spending what we didn't have (both personally and via government spending) for far too many years. Pay off your credit cards and start putting money into your savings account. That's the BEST thing you can do to keep this from happening again.

I'm sorry but that's just a laugh. Wishful thinking.

"Farrakhan is not a neo-con.", Jenn
No, and he isn't a spokesman for the democrats either or do you recognize Limbaugh and Hannity as the spokesmen for the GOP?
Posted by: JR | Jun 22, 2009 9:37:30 PM
Seriously...everyone on this message board needs to get a grip and realize that no matter what party is in there nothing is going to change...reason...very simple...government has turned into big business and the sooner you realize that the better off this country will be and only then. I live in the state of Indiana where we have someone that has been in congress for 31 years...really...REALLY...you can't tell me that they give a damn about this country. Until our government has a complete overhaul and is over thrown which is our constitutional right...nothing will change...call me an extremest...but no i am a realist. I didn't vote for Bush...and I didn't vote for Obama...you vote for the best candidate and lets all be real...no one has been a good candidate for a long time. But let me just say what Mr. O is doing...yes it will do no good...THIS COUNTRY NEEDS TO FIX ITS SELF...and that takes the citizens caring...just curious...how many of you actually vote...so get off your high horses...and SMELL THE DAMN COFFEE!!

"unlike the GOP, the Dems understand that you can't spend money unless you make it. And the only way governments can make money is through taxation."
That defies common sense. Tax-and-spend liberal Democrats are economic idiots. Their policies guarantee lower tax revenues. They are putting MORE pressure on businesses through higher taxes and regulations, which results in less hiring and more outsourcing.
Obama's policies are INCREASING unemployment. The higher the number of unemployed, the lower the tax revenues. That's exactly what's going on right now. And since there isn't enough wealth at the top to pay for the unsustainable debt, the bill will ultimately be paid by the middle class (through higher taxes and inflation).
This isn't exactly rocket science.

"do you recognize Limbaugh and Hannity as the spokesmen for the GOP?"
Um, their views are diametrically opposed to the current GOP that is full of clueless RINOs. You'd know that if you actually listened to them.

Hey A citizen , How responsible was the GOP when they were running this country into the ground . I dont remember hearing then take responsiblity for any thing . And GWB put us all in this position ! all you republicans seem to forget that ...

"Tax-and-spend liberal Democrats are economic idiots."
Really, is that why the republicans must be bailed out after every GOP administration? You neo-cons claim to be exact what you are NOT. Big government is a GOP concept, along with GOP invasion of privacy and GOP aggression toward the world..
Posted by: JR | Jun 22, 2009 9:55:17 PM
I voted for the guy and now don't think he is doing anything to fix the problems. Spending trillions didn't seem to work.
Where's those millions of promised jobs? Since he signed that bill, more lost jobs in my town. And continue to lose jobs. If you're (un)lucky and still working, you get a pay cut. Nice huh. That's right, my company gave out a company wide 11% paycut.
Stimulus??? All talk and not much of anything else. Except for lining the pockets of others with our/my money. I've had it with these crooks and liars.
