Bush-Era Torture Probe Likely
July 12, 2009 9:00 AM
Investigations into the Bush administration's interrogation practices of detainees now seem very likely.
Back in January, President Obama told me "we need to look forward as opposed to looking backwards."
But my sources confirm Newsweek's Daniel Klaidman's reporting that Attorney General Eric Holder is likely to launch an investigation into whether there was abuse or torture of detainee, and whether laws were broken.
However no CIA officials will be held responsible for guidance they were given by Bush officials, unless they went outside of that guidance.
Watch my discussion on all of this with ABC's Kate Snow:

This is one of the few issues I disagree with President Obama. Why give Bushie, Cheney and his cronies a pass on torture, misleading us into a war and wiretapping? If the situation was flipped, do you think the repubs would be so generous?? There must be something that is not being told that is keeping the president from approving further investigation. If there are no reasons, why shouldn't Bushie and company be nailed to the wall???

Yes. Mr. President, for all your compassion, if your predessor needs to be impeached, so be it. Let us all be informed, NO STONES UNTURNED, about the past regime..disgraceful it may be.

I think Holder is over stepping here. If these 'crimes' against prisoners who are thought to be terrorists occurred, why aren't they being investigated by JAG and its counterparts NCIS etc?
I believe this is another play by the Obama Administration to divert attention from his failing policies. He and his minions seem to be experts at that. They began their diversion techniques after losing the NH primary to HRC. It was Axelrod who blamed that loss away by saying "the people of NH went into the voting booth, drew the curtain and voted against the black man". Obviously not the case but it mobilized the AA's to fall behind BO and begin a smear campaign against the Clintons calling them racists.
We know how that progressed to the Black Caucus etc.
The second media manipulation came to change the entire dialogue of the country when Obama announced his 'famous speech on race relations'-the same day the Trib in Chicago published an expose regarding all of Obama's lies with reference to Antoine Rezko with reference to their involvement (daily calls, dinners and meetings), the amount of cash Obama took (16,000 turned to 250,000). This brash move certainly diminished his outright lie during the Ohio Democratic Presidential Debate where he flatly denied any involvement with Rezko on national tv in view of millions of potential voters. He just stood there and lied.
I believe this Holder investigation is just another event, wasting our time and money to deflect the real story about the failing Obama economic plan, the failing Obama economy and more over the outright lies being exposed after the media begins to wake up to reality.

why don't you have the deceased boxers like Greg Page ect. on your memorium. To Olympic fans and boxing fans they are just as important to be remembered as some of the stagnant politicians you put on the list. Thank You

I don't know if any laws have been broken, but the timing is beautiful! I mean Pelosi, Panella, Holder, and Cheney in that order.
Posted by: LongT | Jul 12, 2009 1:38:48 PM
Bust is out of office. He can't be 'impeached'! He now comes under U.S. civil and criminal code laws. If charges are brought, which they won't, he would be 'indicted'.

Convenient - time for big smoke screens - hide Pelosi lies; dramatic drop in polls for Obama; failing economy; spike in unemployment.
Sure, why not launch an investigation of the Republicans - makes alot of sense.
Obama is not against - everyone is afraid to make a move without O's approval - not buying it!!!

Obama has a valid point, the past is the past, it's over it's done. What would an investigation serve? It's not like they will jail or fine them. War is war and even though Bush & Cheney were a joke, there has always been misconduct in war. The only thing different today is that our media and mass communication systems are so advanced, the public becomes informed of things we never would have heard or known during WWII or other wars. Investigations like this will only further waste money that could be better spent somewhere else.

ALTHOUGH THIS IS ALL POLITICAL GOBBLEDEGOOK AND A SMOKESCREEN AS WELL (OBAMA'S APPROVAL RATING HAS ALREADY DROPPED BELOW 50 PERCENT IN OHIO), THE OBAMA AGENDA WILL SIMPLY SELF DESTRUCT ON ITS OWN - NO HELP IS NEEDED!!

I DON'T SEE HOW GIVING THE IRAQI PEOPLE, FREEDOM A JOKE AND I'M SURE THEY DON'T EITHER.

Eric Holder himself sent terror suspects to be tortured in egypt and morocco during the Clinton administration.
Holder was number 2 at the justice department during the Clinton administration. He participated in renditions.
During the Clinton administration Bill Clinton in 1994 signed an executive order allowing the CIA to shoot down civilian planes. The Bush administration refused to look back at Clinton administration.
But now Obama wants to break precedent and go after the previous administration.
Why isn't holder going after the illegal activities in the Clinton administration.
Why not investigate Obama for the drone attacks in pakistan which were never authorized by congress?
Also this investigation is going after the CIA interrogators not the lawyers or bush administration officials according to the NY Times.
You will have mass resignations at the CIA as holder tears it apart.
Who in their right mind would work for the CIA with the democrats permanently in charge because of demographics and illegal immigration.
Posted by: Jeff | Jul 12, 2009 3:18:32 PM
The program never got off the ground. Obama's homeland security adviser james brennan was CIA operations head during the Bush administration.
There are several CIA programs now according to the NY Times that haven't been reported to congress because they were never implemented.
The standard has always been congress is not informed until a decision to implement the program is made. CIA officials said that if you had to go over to congress on every program that is not in the operational phase then it would be impossible.
So it wasn't unusual not to tell congress because the plan was never operational.
Also Cheney was given the security power by the president to make intelligence decisions. The president can delegate that power to other officials.

Bush and Chenney committed crimes. They violated international Law. They also violated Domestic Laws. If they are not held accountable for the millions of lives they took; then the US is doomed to remain in the downward spiral it has been on for the past 20 years.
The only way to redeem yourself, is to take responsibility for the wrong that was done. When you take responsibility, there must be accountability.
Obama cannot talk to Ghanians about progress they have made holding their elected officials accountable and then turn a blind eye to the crimes that were committed by Bush and Chenney and continue to be committed by people like Representative King in New York.
Criminal conduct needs to be prosecuted, particularly when it is committed by agents of the government.

Didn't all of you listen to Holder? He explicitly said he would make his decision after he explored the possibility of his actions affecting the Obama initiatives...hello..if he had any intention of doing investigating, trying to prosecute etc..he would have begun the process.
This nonsense is the 'curve ball' to take onus off of the current administration and its failing policies. Where has the health care debate gone? Where is the news that unemployment is continuing to rise across the nation? Where is the news about the upcoming foreclosure moratorium ending? That news alone is devestating as Obama's idiotic plan is about to blow as the foreclosure round coming at the end of July is actually expected to be double the total to date.
Holder is nonsense with regard to the Bush administration. SMOKE_SMOKE and more smoke.

POLL NUMBERS TALK AND B...S WALKS. OHIO'S TURN AGAINST OBAMA (less than 50 percent approval) HAS TURNED SOUTH IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS. THEY HAD BEEN VERY HIGH UNTIL THEN. STIMULUS PLANS ARE NOT WORKING AND HAVE NO CHANCE OF WORKING UNLESS PRIVATE ENTERPRISE IS PART OF THAT STIMULUS - WHICH IT ISN'T. THROWING MONEY AT "TEMPORARY MAKE WORK PROGRAMS" AND PROPPING UP STATE AND LOCAL GOV WILL ONLY STIMULATE A HECK OF A LOT OF DEBT THAT OUR CHILDREN WILL HAVE TO PAY.

WHAT IDIOTS SAY THAT BUSH AND CHENEY SHOULD BE IMPEACHED? HOW DO YOU IMPEACH PEOPLE THAT ARE OUT OF OFFICE? CHICAGO, DETROIT, CLEVELAND, BALTIMORE AMONG OTHER CITIES - ALL DISASTER AREAS RUN INTO THE GROUND BY DEMOCRATS. NOW THESE SAME LOSERS ARE IN CHARGE OF THE FED. BETTER CHECK YOUR TRAPS, HUNTING AND FISHING GEAR...... THAT IS NOT MEANT TO BE FUNNY!!

Funny now that Obama is slipping in the polls he wants to investigate Bush to distract from the economy. Typical campaign tactics. He is the biggest flip flopper in presidential History.
he stands for nothing and stands up for know one. Soon he will be for Gay marriage

Politics as usual. His poll numbers are heading south, so he has to drag up the "evil" Bush and Cheney regime. Next, he'll start a war just like Clinton did when he bombed Bosnia, a European nation. At least Bush went after more realistic threats to the US. He'll probably bomb Honduras.
Posted by: BK-1970 | Jul 13, 2009 1:28:23 PM
BK--No need to "Drag Up" Cheney, he and his daughter are making the rounds AGAIN! He knows the investigations will end up going back to WHY Iraq was invaded. And it should. He manipulated the CIA intel to fit what he and Rumsfelt were already going to do.Hopefully we'll get to see all the EX CIA officers that quit just after and during the Iraq invasion.

FINALLY - someone talks about investigating these crooks in the Bush regime. Oh and President Obama's popularity is higher than Bush's was at this same point in his Presidency.
Posted by: Scott Bourne | Jul 13, 2009 3:03:51 PM
PLEASE DO THE INVESTIGATION BECAUSE WHEN OBLAHBLAH IS OUT IN 2012 WE CAN INVESTIGATE THE STIMULAS AND WHO KNEW WHAT AND WHO GOT WHAT AND FOR WHAT. WHEN YOUR DROPPING IN THE POLLS FASTER THAN NANACY PELOSI WAG THE DOG. CLASS ACT YOU ARE MR OBLAHBLAH

Let's just stop the bull crap talking. You and I know some kind of torture was used. The full question "is" did President Bush give the ok, or was this an order from V.P. Chaney. It's horrible to hear the different kinds of torture used. Most of all "WHY", did we our country who support humane groups in reference to protecting peoples rights totally ignore the pleas and cries of those groups about those in-humane acts. (We) The United States Of America must strongly depend of such groups to support and plea for our soldiers and citizens rights, when they are violated abroad. We need to see that this never ever happened again.
Posted by: Pedro Dixon | Jul 13, 2009 5:24:34 PM
Blah blah blah. Men with arms against men with arms is war. War is hell. No matter how it comes to pass. All the crying and finger pointing, after or during, won't change a thing. Another thing to consider as well is the fact that whether or not anyone get "punished" for whatever "crime" someone comes up with will not change a thing when the next "war" comes around. Someone will get tortured and someone will die. These are the facts of war. The only difference that might come of punishing some "skape goat", is that the "facts" will be hidden much better from the public that feels that it has the "need/right to know" in the future.

I wish they would put their money where their mouth is already ... PROBE! That way we all will find out that there was nothing "illegal" and all the Democrats can eat crow and shut their whiny mouths! I'm sick of the Dems pulling this card every time the ratings are down, just to fuel anger. Investigate already!!! Quit playing politics and do your job. Oh yeah, while you're at it, Mr. Holder, you might want to finish prosecuting the Black Panther case ... if you honestly believe in justice. That was a slam dunk case and it was mysteriously dismissed. Why aren't Dems complaining about that?? I mean, if you are really interested in following the law of the land. Where is the ACLU with respect to this injustice? I forgot, you only believe in selective justice ... only when it's to nail a Republican. How hypocritical.
