'This Week' EXCLUSIVE: Vice President Joe Biden in Iraq
July 02, 2009 12:35 PM
I’m traveling in Iraq this week with Vice President Joe Biden as we go behind the scenes with the vice president in his new role as point person for the administration on Iraq.
On Sunday I’ll have an exclusive "This Week" interview with Vice President Biden.
And there’s plenty of news to talk about at home and abroad -- the future of Iraq, the administration’s policy on Iran, the latest from Afghanistan, and, of course, the economy. Is the administration's stimulus package enough to deal with mounting job losses?
This week President Obama assigned Biden to take the lead role on Iraq as U.S. forces pull back from Iraqi cities. This while the administration launches its first large-scale counter-insurgency offensive in Afghanistan, and political unrest in Iran challenges the Obama’s policy aims to engage the Iranian government in an effort to halt its nuclear weapons program.
The vice president’s new role as an unofficial envoy to Iraq expands a portfolio that includes everything from overseeing the implementation of the administration's $787 billion stimulus package to heading up a middle class task force.
We’ve also got a terrific Roundtable.
George Will is back. He’ll be joined by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Cynthia Tucker, the Washington Times' Tony Blankley, Vanity Fair's Todd Purdum, and former Bush-Cheney strategist and ABC News contributor Matthew Dowd to talk about comedian turned Senator Al Franken and what his addition to the senate means for the Democrats and the latest on Governor Mark Sanford’s future in South Carolina.
You don't want to miss this show. See you Sunday morning.

Biden's in Iraq? Big deal! What's he gonna let slip this time? The top-secret safehouse where they keep the President, or maybe the launch codes stored in the football? Unless he plagiarizes it, there's not much good or helpful that comes out of the guy!

Don't worry. Even if you announce with PA system, nobody is going to bother.

Please don't reveal the White house website number..
Posted by: Freedom | Jul 2, 2009 1:04:30 PM
LOL - gotta love that "website number" - "You know, just the other day, I was dialin' up ole' Barack on the White House website number - what's that?

"George Will is back. He’ll be joined by Liz Cheney, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Cynthia Tucker and former Bush-Cheney strategist and ABC News contributor Matthew Dowd "
3 out 4 commentators are right wingers.
What's up with that? Oh, of course, the ABC strategy is to be the mainstream version of FOX, and appeal to the Republican base, all 29% of the population. Geesh.

Bam Bam sent him there to stop his blabbering about how clueless they are on the economy, the atimulus that isnt stimulating and the ever growing unemployment rate. It wont work..america is catching on to the Dumb and Dumber show - Bam Bam and Joe Joe .

Joe Biden is the GREATEST. Far better than Cheney. And so what he's a "gaffe" machine, what some call a gaffe, others (like me) call genuine. He's the closest a normal person can get to a politician.
GO JOE!!!!!!!!!

I see Bidon found his own aircraft carrier photo op. Taking credit for what was alreay signed and agreed to in the last administration. What about troop withdraw? Did not the liar Obama say no more troops? Cindy Shehan where is your big mouth now???? My Nephew is being deployed again to Afghanistan and I want to know where your big mouth is and add that idiot Frankin who is out spoken.
Posted by: Jim Rod | Jul 2, 2009 1:34:10 PM
Jim its Biden not Bidon
And.....Obama said troops out of Iraq, and into Afghanistan he never said he's bringing everyone home.
And why not take credit for the troop withdrawal, they're taking the blame for everything the last administration messed up.

Javon......., You have got to be kidding. Biden always has a shake and bake tan, his teeth are capped, his hair is plugged and his words when genuine are gaffe filled otherwise they are plagiarized.Other than that I guess he's a "normal person".

Only in America could a week long look at Michael Jackson life get in the way of a bill that is going to last long after his death. I have been a long time viewer of ABC news, and have relied upon their journalist to give me a sense of what is going on with our America. This Cap and Trade bill needs to be FRONT news each night, so Americans see what it really is, and how much does it affects the average person living in America. I am asking you, ABC to look at this bill and explain to your viewers just who does it benefits. I can’t tell you how disappointing it is hear all the coverage of Michael Jackson, when in reality it does not matter to Americans what the hell happens to his estate. GIVE THIS BILL ALL THE AIRTIME THAT YOU HAVE GIVEN THE MICHAEL JACKSON STORY SO AMERICANS CAN REALLY DECIDE. I know that I’m only one voice, and for those of who read this pass it on, it really does matter. We need our voices heard.

I am happy to see someone is covering something else other than M. Jackson. Yes, he is an icon and I am sorry he died but enough already. Biden's trip to Iraq is important for the troops and for the country. He may have a few faux pauxs, but he knows his business when it comes to foreign policy and despite what you may think,he will do a good job. I think the troops will be happy to see him and maybe he can get to see his son. I am proud of him and his son who did not take the easy way out. As far as this cap and trade bill goes, I heard N. Boortz talk about it and the info he was giving was false according to the expert from Washington. We need you, Stephanopolus to give out whatever info you have and correctly.

MoreNMore, quite a post: it'd be perfect for teaching kids the meaning of three concepts: snark, cliche, and un-witty writing. A perfect trifecta!!!
Posted by: Do it For the Kids | Jul 2, 2009 3:18:37 PM
What i want to know is, why do we keep sending millions of $ to Honduras and wherever else, when we don't have $ to keep our children's teachers in the classroom teaching? and now, CA is going to start sending IOU's? and we keep importing stuff from china and everywere else in the world, no wonder there's no jobs here, but there's plenty of $ to send aboad, and for WAR to keep having our young men and women killed plus the civilians they "accidentaly" kill wherever they are "defending" democracy, so why we have so many repulicans? shouldn't we all be "democrats"?
Posted by: delphina | Jul 2, 2009 6:45:05 PM
Things continue to go downhill in the U.S. as unemployment, number of uninsured, and cost of food all rise, but, we have a great military and we're supporting them all the way. This is insane.
Posted by: jan | Jul 3, 2009 5:05:48 AM
I agree with Amy's point. Why are all these roundtables so heavily weighted towards conservatives?
Posted by: Daryl McCullough | Jul 3, 2009 9:19:48 AM
Actually, Biden in Iraq is big news. I am a Soldier currently in Iraq, and I would give anything to meet the VP. More than just about foreign policy, this visit will raise morale.
I don't think anyone realizes it, but there are a great deal of us here who absolutely love the VPOTUS.
Posted by: Marc | Jul 3, 2009 9:38:28 AM
that is a great panel from 2001. It's great to see ABC staying on top of the news.....

George, Seem fair and balanced like Faux News to me! You sure can pick 'em....full of republican nuttiness!
Posted by: Patrick in IL | Jul 3, 2009 9:54:51 AM
Wow. 'This Week' is practicing "fair and balanced" like Fox News now...
Posted by: Brian | Jul 3, 2009 9:59:19 AM
It's bad enough that three out of the four guests are conservatives. What's worse is that all four of these guests are going to offer perfectly predictable opinions. I can tell you right now how the "roundtable" is going to go. George, why not innovate a little and bring in some fresh voices instead of people who have (in some cases quite literally) built a career out of being mouthpieces for one side or the other.
Posted by: vic | Jul 3, 2009 10:34:10 AM
Is it too late to rebalance the roundtable? With MJ's death it's been a lousy week for TV political news. MTP is wrecked. Let's have one decent show please.
