Hillary on Health Care: Take Two Aspirin
September 18, 2009 12:52 PM
A rare step into the health care debate from the Secretary of State – an issue with which, she acknowledged laughingly, she has her “own acquaintance.”
At a Brookings forum this morning, Clinton predicted that health care would pass this year and drew a laugh when she prescribed "two aspirin" and a good night's sleep to calm the raucous debate over the issue.
“Will it be everything any one person would want? No, of course not. That's not the nature of the compromise required in a legislative setting. But I am -- I'm quite optimistic. You know, we really have an opportunity now to produce an outcome that will significantly improve the important aspects of health-care reform: controlling costs, increasing quality, expanding coverage,” Clinton said.
ABC’s Kirit Radia reports from the event, Clinton said she believes Americans have learned more about health care since the failed attempts in 1993-1994.
“More people know what's at stake, more people have seen us try other things. I mean, I remember one of the arguments that was made 15 years ago, ‘You know, let the HMOs handle it; we'll do something called managed competition; that will control costs; that will eventually cover everybody’…. And of course, you know, that was not to be,” she said.
“So I think that there's just much more real-world experience that people from all walks of life have that, in the absence of what is being proposed, costs will continue to go up for those of us who are insured, coverage will continue to shrink for those of us who are insured, the numbers of people who have access to any form of insurance will continue to diminish; and therefore, I think we will be successful,” Clinton added.

Let's be realistic. The only way to reduce costs in health care, if to reduce profiteering, on the part of all those in the health care business....physicians, hospitals, and insurance companies.
To many, that means sacrilege, in that America is supposed to be about free enterprise, and making MONEY. Trouble is, health shouldn't have to be a "commodity" to be bought and sold.
On the other hand, going half-way, simply creates a whole new set of "problems", which will do nothing to reduce costs.
So......either go to national health care, across the board, or forget it, and leave the status quo.

Are you joking? Health care should not be a commodity? This is the reason why communism does not work. If you refuse pay to the people who work hard to to make headway in the industry, guess what, they stop trying. (Unless we hire idiots for doctors) It will not work. There will BE no physicians of quality left! As proven already...

Obama may be regretting his decision to keep Hillary bottled up on foreign policy and not as a viable and potentially game-changing public ally and voice for health care reform.

Several years ago Texas reformed the medical malpractice laws, which have help slow the escalation of insurance costs and premiums.

The president has talked about "focusing like a laser". What is wrong with identifying the problems; then "focusing like a laser" to fix ONE AT A TIME? Are you working on that Medicare fraud NOW, Mr president?
Posted by: deanbob | Sep 18, 2009 3:24:53 PM
There are problems that need to be fixed. Lets "focus like a laser" on ONE at a time and fix them. Bills would be small and readable (by us and Washington); and fixes could be implemented quickly. Oh yeah, Mr President, how are the fixes to Medicare fraud going?

My fear is that the prez and his congress feel that they just have to pass something to save face.
My warning is that they better not pass something if they want to save ###!
They amy be out for compromise, that's an old union negotiating trick, ask for the moon and stars knowing you will finally settle with just the moon!

I think Obama is going to work on
Immigration reform and declare all those
here illegally to be considered citizens
thus getting them heathcare coverage. I
have a feeling the illegals and other
advocates of the illegals think the same
thing as there seemed to be no outrage
at that statement that Obama made saying
they would not be allowed to access the
system. I don't trust this guy as far
as I could throw him. He will shake
your hand and give you a big smile while
putting a dagger into the heart of
this country. He is very scary.

Sorry for the typo, here we go again:

Rick McDaniel - Maintaining the status quo won't work. It's failing and failing rapidly. Almost every politician, no matter their political persuasion, knows this. The position is awkward because we've allowed this issue to drift, unanswered for so many, many years. The game-changer is that many, many employers will opt out over the next decade. They cannot afford the rising costs. They've been forced to eliminate jobs or move them overseas, reduce quality of products or stop producing altogether. Or, they've moved to shift more costs to their employees (co-pays), reduce coverage or eliminate coverage. Insurance companies have become the expensive arbiter of who gets health care and at what price. And, the central outcome of the status quo is that fewer and fewer Americans can and will be able to afford to get sick.

Asley Johnson: No its not a joke health care should be a right. You can have every other corner of our economy in the free market but the health of our citizens is a national security issue. We can;t have people playing by the rules only to go broke when they get sick. Or sick people commiting crimes because they are hopeless and broke. Or business going bankrupt because they can't afford to pay for health insurance for their employees. You see long ago Ronald Reagan put this stupid communisum idea into the american heath care debate and our country has not recovered. Why not jut make our citizens healthy and let them be healthy contributing members to our economy. Maybe you think that our country can best be protected by overweight couch potatoes and sickly people... I don't. Healthcare reform NOW.

Why in HELL is this "REFORM" going to cost $900,000,000,000? I thought it was supposed to save money. In reality, it's another government giveaway, intended to support those that won't. It won't do a damn thing for middle class America.

and also Ashley some of our best doctors were military doctors who got payed beans. Some people are born to be doctors and that is there passion so they will do their job the best they can if they make a little less money boohoo.

To be realistic, everyone should give Mr. Obama credits for being our President. A President must be thought to have some (if not high) level of patriotism. Don't put him down too lightly.
Also to be realistic, we must understand that not everyone is stupid and someone must know the problems coming from health care reform, especially when he is President.
Health care America is going out of control because of profiteering, bureaucracy, and law suits. Everyone knows that. This is a do-or-die situation. If health care is not fixed, America will be far worse than being communism. It will be a jungle.
We should all be calm and be smart. Everyone must get together to come up with a fair and just universal health care plan that works. We should support our President instead of bickering against him.

They almost won me over to support of the health care reform until they started threatening Senator Lincoln and Rep Ross.
They should represent the voters not the party or some faceless out of state PAC
Those who ran those adds should learn the term “paradoxical reaction” so they’ll have a name to put on what they’re about to see. Senator Lincoln just got a new supporter, probably a lot of new suppoters.

Rick...you need to switch careers. The medical industry is looking for people just like you who will work for less...much less.

Obama wants to transform most of our system of Government. His health care policies will overwhelm the system and enrage peole after they are implemented. He criticzed Hillarys plan that would make everyone buy insurance but now he has the same exact requirements. He will get those illegals in there somehow- you wait and see. His foreign policy is dangerously naiive....giving the Russians exactly what they wanted and getting nothing in return. The Russians have helped Iran with their nuclear facilities. They are going to ship them ballistic defense missles. They are also giving arms to that fanatic in Venezuela...Obama could have demanded they stop their supplies to Iran and Venezuela. HE didnt...He think that the Russians will go along with stronger sanctions on Iran - yeah right, uh huh... Also China will veto it. Israel si watching ...Once Iran gets thosee missles an Israeli strike on the nuke plants would be impossible. But Obama hasshown his disdain for Israel - they are in effect -on their own. Mr Obama is truly scary and his transformation of policies will endanger us in many ways.

BLAH BLAH BLAH.. the key to reducing health care cost lies in tort reform.

It sounds like she has no hope for a public option. The democrats will suffer major defeat in upcoming elections if they don't close on a robust public option.
Posted by: David | Sep 19, 2009 12:33:54 PM
The Dems will suffer a major defeat if they close WITH a government option (that is, 'public' option for those of you in marxist left field). If public support polling for the government option is any indication of voting numbers, republicans win by a landslide.

It's morally wrong to leave 100 million Americans un or underinsured, 1 illness away from financial ruin. And it's wrong to burden small business with the outrageous insurance costs also -- found a cool site; Balkingpoints ; incredible satellite view of earth

Values? Please redefine it. America is Morally wrong with it's citizens being "cherry picked" whether they live or die by A system, that is draining the world's economy. It is ironic that most Americans was so passionate about the moral and human rights of the protesting Iranian people, but yet is oppose the Moral and Rights of it's country's own. Please help me to understand the hypocrisy of the right.
Posted by: sara | Sep 20, 2009 10:54:17 AM
Values........Morals? It is a Moral Failure of America to continue down the path of allowing one industry to decide who lives and who dies.....based on Dollars. We ought to be ashamed of ourselves. The opposing party was in office for 8 years, some individually for decades, and the Healthcare Industry has continued to "drain" the life out of this country. Never has the Republican Party even bought Healthcare into their conversations, and it strikes me funny now, that they have a "plan"......they had plenty of time if they didn't distract the American people by going into an unjust war, while they allowed the financial institutions to ride cowboy over this country, and allowed the domestic policies for it's own people to be "hijacked".....and 8 years later opposing the American people who voted to right these wrongs. America, STAY out of other countries on their morals and human rights issues until you FIX your own, and until then, America, you have no creditability, and is as Strong as your SICK citizens.....go figure.

since when has the government ran anything efficently? It's all about help your friends at Goldman. Goldman finances, government pays them
Posted by: kennedy | Sep 20, 2009 1:16:03 PM
Rick McDaniel and Brian are exactly right in that healthcare and well being of its citizens are the responsibilities of the nation and its government.
Rick, Your explanation is too starightforward and too much for Ashley Johnsons to understand. Let's leave it at that.
