Obama on ACORN: 'Not Something I've Followed Closely' Won't Commit to Cut Federal Funds

September 20, 2009 9:00 AM

It was one of the most popular topics among the questions you submitted to me for my interview with President Obama – the controversy involving ACORN.

While the President said that ACORN "deserves to be investigated" in light of the "inappropriate" video that's gone viral, he did not endorse recent votes in Congress to cut off federal funding for the community group.

Here’s our FULL exchange:

STEPHANOPOULOS:  How about the funding for ACORN?

OBAMA:  You know, if -- frankly, it's not really something I've followed closely.  I didn't even know that ACORN was getting a whole lot of federal money.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  Both the Senate and the House have voted to cut it off.

OBAMA:  You know, what I know is, is that what I saw on that video was certainly inappropriate and deserves to be investigated.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  So you're not committing to -- to cut off the federal funding?

OBAMA:  George, this is not the biggest issue facing the country.  It's not something I'm paying a lot of attention to.

Watch it HERE.

So he "didn't even know ACORN was getting a whole lot of federal money."I think Rep. Joe Wilson was right.

Not followed closely? Now there is a relative term. Acorn's been around since the 70's. He was even a lawyer for them! Can anyone believe this guy? He's lying through his teeth!

Posted by: LongT | Sep 20, 2009 9:37:12 AM

You can bet one of his 'czars' is keeping him posted.

Posted by: LongT | Sep 20, 2009 9:37:58 AM

WHAT A LIAR!

Posted by: Kathy | Sep 20, 2009 9:53:05 AM

I thought ACORN and SEIU were his organizers!!

Posted by: Ed Taylor | Sep 20, 2009 9:56:23 AM

in all due respect Mr. President, you promised the American people that you and your team would go through the Federal budget with a fine tooth comb and dollar for dollar.

Either you lied then or you are lieing now!

We have more earmarks than ever before!

Not watching your cronies? I think that is turning you back BO!

Didn't Obama's campaign give ACORN $800,000 for voter registration? Wouldn't truly looking out for the American people involve investigating and cleaning up/shutting down an organization that appears rife with corruption and has been the recipient of millions of our tax dollars?

Posted by: Gary Howie | Sep 20, 2009 10:06:33 AM

Typical answer from him.

Posted by: Sue | Sep 20, 2009 10:16:53 AM

Obama doesn't pay a lot of attention to an organization that was instrumental in getting "new voters" to the polls for him?
And this was the group he served as an attorney?

He is not telling the truth!
He needs to 'fess up to his connections -- all of them.

Posted by: pcafe | Sep 20, 2009 10:16:54 AM

It may not be the biggest issue but it is a HUGE issue because we are tired of the government wasting our hard earned money on corrupt organizations. Obama is being very foolish about ACORN.

The ABC news resembles an infomercial for "Team Obama". He has made plenty of mistakes and lies. Now go out there and report it instead of patronizing this administration. Obama is a Liar about ACORN. The videos of Obama's support to pre-election ACORN and encouraging their help in "shaping the new country". Obama - Quit lying. ABC - quit pandering.

Posted by: temple62 | Sep 20, 2009 10:28:27 AM

Sounds a lot like when President Obama said he never heard the rants of Rev. Wright. I guess ACORN will go under the bus.

Posted by: Francis Godici | Sep 20, 2009 10:31:15 AM

This President lies continually and thinks we all swallow everything he has to say. Only those who follow blindly and can't put two and two together continue to believe him. Boy did America make a big mistake

Posted by: Valerie | Sep 20, 2009 10:38:42 AM

He again is lying. Kinda makes you wonder if he was lying when he took the oath "To protect and defend the constitution of the United States".
Wake up America!!! Let your representatives know that they are being used by him. (At their own political expense), as they will find out when they are up for reelection.

Joe Wilson deserves an apology

Posted by: Boxcar | Sep 20, 2009 10:44:24 AM

Obama doesn't want to take responsibility for his endorsement and close relationship with ACORN. For him to say he isn't following it closely is probably a blatant political white lie. Of course he and his team is following it. They just don't want Obama to associate himself in any way anymore to this organization because it could rip him apart politically.

Posted by: M. Sheldon | Sep 20, 2009 10:49:26 AM

give me a break - he knows that Kanye West is a jackass but he doesn't know that his former community organization is ripping off the government - and Wilson takes the rap for calling him a liar?

Posted by: Jo | Sep 20, 2009 10:53:17 AM

With all due respect Mr. President,---YOU LIE!!!!!!! And I am no racist Mr. Carter.
Joe Wilson spoke for a lot of Americans.

Posted by: Jimbob-Pa | Sep 20, 2009 10:56:28 AM

ACORN? What's ACORN? I ahven't been following. and by the way..pay no attention to the 300 pound man behind those curtains.

Posted by: ed sonner | Sep 20, 2009 11:02:46 AM

The President is the biggest LIAR ever in office. He acts like he does not follow the very thing that got him elected. They are as corrupt as he is and now he is mingling in the Ted Kennedy Seat and the NY Gov. race. This Chicago Politics has to be defeated befor we have another Hugo Chavez. OBAMA is the racist.

AMEN KD.
They say history repeats itself.
Nixon-----Watergate
Obama-----Acorngate

Posted by: Chris B | Sep 20, 2009 11:20:11 AM

Wow,What a stack of BS obama tosses. Does this dark association with Acorn go right to the top members of the White House? Time for a big, big, big investigation. It's time for the people to know.

Posted by: mike mcgear | Sep 20, 2009 11:27:43 AM

How stupid does he thing America is? The ACORN investigated in multiple states before the videos were even played?? The ACORN that boasts 1.3 million registered...but forgets to mention roughly 400,000 were rejected!!!! Has anyone ever tried to calculate the cost to local governments that have to go through and reject roughly 400,000 "Mickey Mouse" ACORN registrations??? OBAMA better pay attention to the numbers in the house and Senate that seem very close to VETO OVERRIDING numbers to cut off ACORN funds!!
