President Obama: ‘Skeptical’ on More Troops for Afghanistan

September 20, 2009 9:00 AM

President Obama supported a flexible timeline for withdrawing troops from Iraq.

Now some of his fellow Democrats like Senators Russ Feingold, Diane Feinstein, and Byron Dorgan are calling for the same in Afghanistan.

While the President didn’t commit to that, he did say – for the first time, I believe –that he was “skeptical” about sending more troops to Afghanistan.

Here’s our exchange:

STEPHANOPOULOS:  Afghanistan is a big issue facing the country right now.

OBAMA:  That is a big issue.  That's worth talking about.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  You were for a flexible time line in Iraq.  Some people now are saying that's exactly what should happen in Afghanistan if the same conditions hold. Do you agree with that?

OBAMA:  Here's what I think.  When we came in, basically, there had been drift in our Afghan strategy.  Everybody acknowledges that.  And I ordered a top to bottom review.  The most important thing I wanted was us to refocus on why we're there.  We're there because al Qaeda killed 3,000 Americans and we cannot allow extremists who want to do violence to the United States to be able to operate with impunity.

Now, I think we've lost -- we lost that focus for a while and you started seeing a -- a classic case of mission creep where we're just there and we start taking on a whole bunch of different missions.

I wanted to narrow it.  I did order 21,000 additional troops there to make sure that we could secure the election, because I thought that was important.  That was before the review was completed.  I also said after the election I want to do another review.  We've just gotten those 21,000 in.  General McChrystal, who's only been there a few months, has done his own assessment.

I am now going to take all this information and we're going to test whatever resources we have against our strategy, which is if by sending young men and women into harm's way, we are defeating al Qaeda and -- and that can be shown to a skeptical audience, namely me -- somebody who is always asking hard questions about deploying troops, then we will do what's required to keep the American people safe.

Watch our exchange HERE.

Um, excuse me, Mr. President. What about your promise to bring them home?

way to seel out our troops already in afghanistan and jeopardize their mission barry! all this to appease your liberal kook base, what a 'leader'- NOT and YOU are supposed to be the more experienced leader than sarah palin (least thats what evryone told us last year)? please barry, after 8 months in office i am still trying to find something you are good at. where's that birth certificate bro?

I believe we can win in Afganistan if we focus on hearts and minds. The Taliban is the worse of all evils and I think most Afgans know it.

I am soooo tired of Barrack Obama ALWAYS
being refered to as OUR BLACK PRESIDENT!
HE IS NOT!!! Why has everyone forgotten his MOTHER??? He is BI-RACIAL!!! HE is NOT BLACK!!! Following this rationale, all biracial people should be considered black...I being 1/4French,1/4 Irish and 1/2Apache should be considered Apache?
I'm just so sick and tired of both he and the pundits (you included)using this misconception as a selling point for politics and policies.
To reiterate...HE IS NOT BLACK-HE IS BI-RACIAL!!!

Take the cowardly way out.

If this guy isn't going to fight then he needs to get out before we lose any more of our brave soldiers in vein.

Fish or cut bait Obama.

Too bad McCain didn't win. We could have already nuked Iran and defeated Al-Qaida in Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Historically, even the strongest militaries have rarely won fights against militias.
Americans did not win in Iraq. They shook hands with Sunnis to calm down the situation. Sunnis in Iraq were the ones doing the terror in Iraq.
Pakistan army could not defeat the mukhti bani, which was weaponized and trained by India, and lost East Pakistan.
Russians could not beat Mujahideen, a rag tag militia, though supported heavily by American weapons and CIA/ISI training & orchestration.
I think it will be the best decision if Americans make a deal with taliban, bring the war to an end, & bring soldiers home.
Pakistan's success over al qaeda is not going to last, it will back fire, every day we hear about terrorist attack despite the success they claim.

President Obama is acting on his campaign promises more accurately and honestly than any of the 8 presidents I've seen serve in my lifetime. This includes Iraq, health care, the environment, and Afghanistan. He is also under more of a microscope than any president ever has been. We should not let our new obsession with the gossip machines of cable media and the internet obscure the integrity and greatness of this man as a trustworthy leader.

If any person that has a project to deliver on, has to have a fair amount of skepticism. Everywhere you look in life there are many obstacles which I call 'derailers'. If our focus (tunnerl vision) is so attuned to the end product, and we fail to recognize the periperal obstacles that we can miss a better opportunity along our course.

It reminds me of the wonderful people who have tried to remove mines in a field or war zone. Do they run through the course and hope to avoid them? Or do they steadily, but effectively, work their way through and grab what they can, when they can?

If we are not tuned into the peripheral vision obstacles that little the highways of life, than there maybe opportunities missed along the way. Good luck Mr. President.

Was this before or after the arrest or investigation of the people in Colorado and Queens who claim affiliation with al Queda and another terrorist threat?

Biracial, tri-racial (French, Irish, Apache), who cares what "race" the president is (I know a lot of people do) as long as e is doing the best job possible to keep America safe. Most of us here are mutts anyway!

Well said, bob10001. I wholeheartedly concur.

Is it me or does George seem overly aggressive and borderline rude? He is too eager and even cutting him off. Whats with that?

Posted by: Monica32 | Sep 20, 2009 10:47:09 AM

Why don't they post the whole interview unedited, I want to see that, come on ABC!

Posted by: Jake | Sep 20, 2009 10:52:50 AM

Funny to see all the Republican hypocrites now blaming Obama for having troops there.

Posted by: David | Sep 20, 2009 11:00:15 AM

I just watched with my own eyes on the video Obama said that he didnt even know that Acorn was going to receive "a lot of money"($8.5 Billion) Oh my gosh. Who cares about a lowly eight and a half billion dollars going to criminals? IF YOU DONT KNOW ABOUT THIS OBAMA--------WHO DOES????? ONE OF YOUR CZARS??? WHERE IS OUR MONEY??? WHERE IS OUR PRESIDENT???

Posted by: tim | Sep 20, 2009 11:03:19 AM

Another renegged campaign pled.
No wonder he is on the road to being the worst ever president.

Posted by: jonny | Sep 20, 2009 11:06:15 AM

WOW.Is George trying to put ABC News back into the mainstream by treating Obama like a real president instead of a "black man" whom we cannot criticize apart from being racist? Making Obama legitimate might restore some trust in ABC News, but it will take time for us to get used to moving forward instead of backwards into the 1960's.

Posted by: Sandra | Sep 20, 2009 11:08:33 AM

Yes Monica, it is just you. The rest of us have watched how the old media at least tried to keep a president honest by CHALLENGING his ideas. Remember how democrats said that criticizing Bush was the highest form of patriotism? Dont you believe we have any patriots left in the media?

Posted by: Sandra | Sep 20, 2009 11:11:09 AM

No voting present this time, Obama. Lives are at stake. Either bring the Taliban down like Bush did to Al Queda in Iraq, or get out. I will support you either way, but I will not support nor respect a Commander in Chief who continues to vote "present."

Posted by: reneemf | Sep 20, 2009 11:12:22 AM

Just because he holds the job doesn't mean he knows anything about fighting a war!

Posted by: Ed Taylor | Sep 20, 2009 11:12:58 AM

Listen to the Commanders of the Troops on the ground and give them what they need. We are at war Politically Correct decisions on military matters in a time of war get more people killed. The way Obama is going the movie "Red Dawn" will be a true story soon!!!!

Posted by: Matthew Lashley | Sep 20, 2009 11:21:00 AM

George did not do a very good job on this interview. It seems like he set out to argue about the definition of tax rather than the issues at hand. David Gregory got you here George. Much better interview.

Posted by: JH | Sep 20, 2009 11:27:18 AM

You mean we didn't define the mission before we allocated an additional 21,000 troops or did have time to think about it while campaigning about this being the right war last year? Once again we have democrates playing politics with Americans in harm's way.
