Axelrod: Fox News Is 'Not Really A News Organization'

October 18, 2009 10:00 AM

WH Communications Director Anita Dunn declared a war with Fox News this week and this morning on This Week, Axelrod reinforced their stance saying “[FOX] is really not news.”

I asked him if he's worried his strategy is fortifying his enemy?

“I’m not concerned, Mr. Murdoch has a talent for making money,” Axelrod said.

“The only argument that Anita was making is that they are not really a news organization, if you watch even its not even their commentators, but a lot of their news program. It’s really not news, it’s pushing a point of view and the bigger thing is that other news organizations like yours, ought not to treat them that way. And we’re not going to treat them that way, we’re going to appear on their shows and participate, but understanding that they represent a point of view.”

Watch our exchange HERE.

FOX News is like most of the rest of the programming on its network....trash. Murdoch has made a fortune pawning trash TV to the American public while decrying the breakdown of civilization. They have made an institution of hypocrisy.

Considering that NBC almost has its own office in the White House, Mr. Axelrod has a lot of chutzpah calling out Fox.

Posted by: Greg | Oct 18, 2009 10:35:55 AM

it's called Fox Faux for a reason..

Posted by: Gus | Oct 18, 2009 10:36:42 AM

And he thinks ABC news or CBS news or NBC news or CNN news aren't opinion providers. This man better lay off the drugs. Isn't this story an opinion. Axelrod's perspective is his opinion. He is a fool

The only reason the WH is declaring war with Fox is because Obama's got the rest of the news organizations in his back pocket, but Fox won't bow to His Highness.

Posted by: Ang | Oct 18, 2009 10:42:30 AM

Amen. The circus Fox "News"??? has made of American political discussions is an embarassing spectacle which the rest of the world watches with the same bewilderment and disgust as they've done watching Jerry Springer from abroad, wondering if all Americans act and behave similar. It might make entertaining television but it is scary to think people really act/believe like that. Is the right so angry at losing control that they will stoop to any level to discredit and marginalize the left? Have we lost all moderation and reason? Our politics have become purely emotionally motivated and from what I see, the right is clearly at fault.

Fox News hammers the Government for their bad decisions be it GOP run or Dem run. We are Canadian/English and firmly believe that Fox News is more fair than the others combined

Posted by: Chris | Oct 18, 2009 10:45:54 AM

This is just another of the Obama team tactics to rid themselves of anyone who will not worship Obama. Axelrod/Obama is just scared of Fox News since they are the only news network willing to report the truth against Obama and his associates/czars. Fox has the highest ratings of all the networks combined. People want the truth, not news stories to support Obama and his agenda.

Posted by: Debbie | Oct 18, 2009 10:47:48 AM

Mr. Arod's comments indicate to me that he is using his skill as a WH spokesman to convince the public of another falsehood. If FOX is not a news network then why do they even bother to mention it. I think they are scared. Afterall what happened to that energy czar freak that disappeared so suddenly from the picture. Now it is time for Anita Dunn and Mark Lloyd to go as well. Anita Dunn thinks Mao Tse Tung is great!! Good grief people wake up and smell the crack.Lloyd thinks Chavez is wonderful.OMG!!!!!!

Posted by: hil | Oct 18, 2009 10:48:39 AM

ALRIGHT NOW!!! Call it exactly what it is! Its about time people start really questioning the journalistic credibility of FOXagendaNews.

Posted by: FS | Oct 18, 2009 10:50:47 AM

FOX is at the top of the idiot tier. It is a tabloid network-no news, just opinions. Close behind are the other 'networks'. Yellow journalism. ABC-CBS-MSNBC report and slant gossip garbage for the most part. FOX creates the garbage.

Posted by: Erik | Oct 18, 2009 10:51:10 AM

It's true. Fox news is essentially Republican TV. It's entertainment. Just like the talk shows.

Posted by: seriously | Oct 18, 2009 10:52:19 AM

create 'classes', and encourage warfare between them...

This is just like cuba, vz, china , n. korea, Iran and other countries trying to neutralize/silience/remove any opposing view and opposition to their political view. Very dangerous road for america to travel and being driven by the president.

FOX NEWS! "Biggoted and Slanted"!!

Posted by: Sentinel | Oct 18, 2009 10:55:23 AM

Fox News hammers the Government for their bad decisions be it GOP ---Fox news claimed fannie and Freddie made all the bad loans in the sub prime melt down. They said, essentially, it was all the black's fault, all thoes blacks who took out loans they couldn't afford and then dumped them. But whoops! Businessweek Magazine came out about a month later and did a big analysis and said, uhhh, no, actually, Fannie and Freddie did not MAKE bad loans, they invested in the same derivatives everyone else did that were BACKED by the bad loans, just like the banks did. The bad loans, the subprimes, were made by unregulated PRIVATE mortage companies. So if you're inclined to say the government does everything wrong, and that regulation is bad, then these pesky little facts would be a problem for you, because the PRIVATE industry mortage companies that bush would NOT regulate then killed the economy NOT Fannie and Freddie whose lending standards were much stricter. So...did Fox EVER retract their statement it was all Fannie and Freddie's fault?????Nope. In fact, they just kept on it. Why? Do you imagine they can't read? Or are so ignorant they were not aware of businessweek and wallstreet journal anaylsis???? well, maybe, but my bet, Murdoc said "hmmm, our listeners wont like that. well, dont tell them. They'll never find out on their own! God knows they dont read teh wallstreet journal or Business Week! I just want my ratings!" and still, ONE YEAR LATER< to this day, you STILL get right wingers coming on here defending Fox as great news and claiming it was all Fannie and Freddie's fault.

Posted by: seriously | Oct 18, 2009 10:58:12 AM

To all you Fox News supporters stop drinking the cool-aid. Ever since the Fox News network went on the air in 1996 they were never a news outlet, but the communication arm of the Republican Party and still are. They wouldn't know what was fair and balance was if it hit them in the face.

Posted by: bob | Oct 18, 2009 10:58:55 AM

lol You people on here debating this. The reason he said Foxnews is not a news channel... because they're not. Go look at the executives and directors histories. Do you know Roger Ailes history?

If you call Foxnews News you HAVE to call the Enquirer news...

the reason we are in the situation that we are in and the last decade went the way it went, why we ignored the financial issues, elected George Bush twice, went to war...go look at when FoxNews launched.

We elected , went to war, ignored our financial travesties all becuase of the hype and spin of Fox (extension of the enquirer) News.

Youwant to be mad at our situation. Fox is a cancer to democracy... they are a tabloid standard...and screwed over your children.

Please George...

you know Rahm.

Can you tell him that this strategy is so asinine, demeans the presidency, and makes someone like me, who wants the policies of this administration to succeed, be so totally turned off by the thuggery of the Chicago advisers?

Anita Dunn, Gibbs, Axelrod, Emanuel... and, sadly, Obama... STOP.

You make yourselves look small.

Obama promised to be the president of all Americans, to listen especially when they disagree.

Regardless of the news content at Fox, it is the channel that troops in Iraq and Afghanistan tune into, that people throughout this country tune into -- Americans.

What do you gain by dissing so many people?

I am so disgusted. So absolutely disgusted by the lack of decency, the inability to take the high road, and the disrespect for presidential prestige displayed by this administration.

They're embarrassing us. And we want President Obama to succeed. We want health care reform, and climate change legislation, and immigration reform, and support the foreign policy by in large.

But this sort of thuggery is appalling and I can't stand to be so associated with it. It makes me lose my respect for the administration and wish for and administration that would restore respect for all Americans regardless of what they believe.

Why are they so blind and stupid, George????

Please tell Rahm.

Amazing to me that the Obama Administration can blatantly call out Fox News because Fox is the only news company not completely in the tank for liberalism. It's painfully apparent CBS, ABC, NBC and the rest all have a liberal agenda and daily promotes Obama's policies. None have an ounce of integrity about them. So that leaves Fox, which by the way, often has liberal commentators offering a balanced perspective. This simply isn't good enough for Obama; how dare ANYONE not get on board with his Marxist train!?? Well, I guess it says something about the value of Fox given their ratings. There's something Obama fears.

Posted by: fedup_11 | Oct 18, 2009 11:00:29 AM

The fact that Fox is anti-Obama is immaterial in my opinion. The problem I have with Fox is that they call obvious falsehoods and half-truths news. If you are so against someone or something you should be able to provide truth that shows why the person/idea is so bad, Fox has shown repeatedly that they cannot.

The only time Fox attacks any Republican is when the Republican has said something that doesn't agree with the Fox storyline.

Posted by: Tom | Oct 18, 2009 11:01:08 AM

Since when is the White House an authority on the news??? Don't they have a SMALL vested interest in who reports what?

Posted by: Frank | Oct 18, 2009 11:04:18 AM

If Fox is an arm for the GOP then MSNBC and CNN are arms for the Obama administration. The administration attacks on FOX exhibits to me a fear that they have for critism and the massive step the are willing to take to supress freedom of speech. This is not exactly the unity Obama spoke of during his campaign. Appears that division is the name of the game and divide and conquer may be the objective. It is all about perception mr. president....it is all about perception.

All one needs to do is to go to the official website of each of the major American news organizations and look at the top stories on their opening pages. FauxNews is pathetic, and I automatically lose any respect for anyone who believes anything that is said on Murdoch's network. I think the "National Enquirer" has more credence as a serious journalistic endeavor. Beck, Hannity and (of course) Bill-O all blatantly push their far-right agenda across as "fair and balanced" reporting, when it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that their agenda is the spread of false propaganda designed to enhance the stature of the right, and to use scare tactics on people in order to discredit the left. Oh... and the fascination with crap like "Octo-mom" is another thing that FauxNews exploits, because they know the same imbeciles who believe their "reporting" will also be interested in the inbred exploits of Jerry Springer rejects.

Posted by: Dan the Man | Oct 18, 2009 11:07:55 AM

This story is simply a subtle attempt by the WH to make future "censorship" of news organizations possible and more socially/politically correct, aided by the liberal media. If Nixon were President today and his staff were making these kind of statements against a news organization, there would be outrage by the media, not what we are seeing now.
Anyway, "news" shows is a relative term. In my area we have a 3-hour "morning news" show with 15 minutes of actual news reports and the rest "chit-chat" among the anchors dealing with non-news nonsense and trivial matters. They do have sexy female anchors though!
