First White House Reaction on Nobel

October 09, 2009 7:04 AM

Two key White House aides were both convinced they were being punked when word came in on their blackberries.

"It's not April 1st, is it?" said one.

President Obama was as surprised as his staff.  Robert Gibbs called him with the news a little before 6, and aides say he was “humbled” by the honor.

While surprised, White House aides also argue that prize will strengthen President's hand both at home and abroad.

Especially on the issue of non-proliferation.  "This will deepen the isolation of both Iran and North Korea," says one.  "You can't in Iran today and not think the world is moving away from nuclear weapons when you're thinking of moving towards them."

Another argues that it will reinforce Obama's efforts to push Israel and the Palestinians to the next stage of the peace negotiations. The Prize "adds moral authority" to the President's efforts, and it strengthens his hand with Congress and the country.

"Americans want to be loved," he said.

He didn't campaign, he didn't seek, he cast no vote, offered no "pork," "bribe," or "inducement." All he did was be who he was and the WORLD recognized him for his Noble effort. These were people who placed no credence in the honor, word or merit of Limbaugh, Steele, Beck, Coburn, Inhofe, or that blonde haired, pinch faced woman with the fingernails-on-chalkboard voice railing on American television. It looks as if Rush has failed to have Obama fail. No other President has achieved such an honor in a mere 1 month in office. Not one. And the head scratching clowns can't figure it out. They don't get it, never did get it and never will get it. But Obama got it. Hope and change, baby, hope and change.

This is a great honor for our president and speaks volumes to where the country is going as a whole. Continue to lead the best way that you can, and let postivity guide your decision making. I cant speak for others but right now I am glass half full, even in the tough economy and its a blessing. Nobody is perfect but by GOD, when you carry your head high, speak with confidence and erapture millions, you will make a difference. I challenge others to put away their measuring tapes, stop bickering, and get back to the post 9/11 American pride filled days.

The commander-in-chief of a nation fighting two simultaneous wars is awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The same Nobel Peace Prize winner is trying to encourage other nations to send troops to fight in Afghanistan, while planning to order tens of thousands of more U.S. troops to fight in Afghanistan too.

What irony!

HAHAHA...is it April 1st? Where's my calendar......

Posted by: Jim | Oct 9, 2009 7:27:20 AM

You've got to be kidding me, NoFailure. When I first heard the news I almost burst out laughing. The blind Obama love-fest has reached new heights of nonsense, and I speak as a Brit.

What has Obama done, other than give speeches on 'Hope and Change'? His domestic policies are terrible. The Nobel Peace prize has become a joke.

Congratulations Mr. President. This is a result of an international committee listening to your words and watching your actions and setting politics aside. The world embraces the notion of seeing the US talk 'with' all nations, not 'at' them. I'm proud of your accomplishments and I support your efforts.

Somewhere in Hell, another recipient of the ignoble , Yassir Arafat is laughing.

Posted by: pauldia | Oct 9, 2009 7:30:54 AM

It must be April 1st. What has he done to deserve this? He has thrown our country into an economic crisis. He has spent more money than any president, promised more things but they haven't happened, etc. And now he wants to put each American into more debt by fining us if we don't have insurance.

Posted by: Irishrose | Oct 9, 2009 7:32:04 AM

ALFRED NOBEL IS TURNING OVER IN HIS GRAVE. I THOUGHT THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WAS FOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. LOOKS LIKE THE NOBEL COMMISSION IS TRYING TO INFLUENCE AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY. THIS IS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO ALL THE PREVIOUS WINNERS WHO REALLY WORKED HARD TO EARN THE PRIVILEGE.

Posted by: MJ | Oct 9, 2009 7:36:38 AM

I'm sorry - things like this just dilute the value of the Nobel, and make even more of a mockery of the process. The Nobel is supposed to represent a lifetime of work. What has he done? There were far more worthy candidates. Starting to look like the Oscars.

I can't believe...I just can't believe it. I just don't remember someone being honored so much for doing so little.

Posted by: TFriend | Oct 9, 2009 7:37:23 AM

The nominations for the award closed less than two weeks after Obama took office. What did he do during his first two weeks to deserve this award over people that have worked a lifetime? Politicizing this award does nothing but tarnish it.

This economic crisis is the result of the republican policies chenney and his lap dog bush.

For the first time in a long time people around the world are starting to feel positive about the US because we see a president who doesn’t want to bomb all opposition back to the stone-age. A man with a vision for a nuclear weapon free world is something we long ago stopped hoping to see in the US. Also now that someone who is capable of understanding the science of ACW is in charge of the country that adds most to the problem maybe we have some chance of preventing world catastrophe.

Perhaps it is too soon for this prize but maybe it will give Americans a sense of the despair the world felt at the actions of the the US before Obama was elected. This is a man who everyone should be supporting because if even a fraction of his vision for the US and the world comes to pass it will improve life for all of us. This prize is the world saying to conservatives – stop your foolish bickering and get behind your country and the world. Every man is not an island.

You have got to be kidding me!! What in the world has President Obama done to deserve this award? It seems to be a victory of rhetoric over action, hype over reality and an example of air headed exuberance becoming victorious over pragmatic deliberation. I have lost all respect for the Nobel Committee. My goodness, what were they thinking?

Posted by: BubblerDad | Oct 9, 2009 7:40:00 AM

It's obvious, the more a president succeeds in screwing up this country, the better his odds are for 'earning' one of this booby prize.

Posted by: Chuck | Oct 9, 2009 7:40:47 AM

This prize means nothing. What has Obam done that he should receive such an award. Sad for the Nobel Peace Award and how it used to mean something! No more!

Posted by: stoltz61 | Oct 9, 2009 7:40:53 AM

In my town, for the little kids playing sports, they give out a "certificate of participation" at the end of the sports season.
This is what the NPP has become.
I would be embarresed to accept such an award if I were Obama.
But those left wingers are going to see this as some kind of positive. Such small minds.....

I was teary-eyed this morning when I heard the news that our President Obama won this award. I LOVE this president and the hope that he has brought not only to our country but to the world. To all those who still insist on the negative race based comments - We are all AMERICANS - we are all hoping for the same bright future, we are all HUMAN...

Posted by: Lisa Leichssenring | Oct 9, 2009 7:43:10 AM

I gotta admit that my first thought when someone mentioned this today was also that they were joking. But I find it hard how any American can be upset at the honor - Obama did not receive it for his personal actions, but for his actions as the leader of the United States. And after the past years where anti-Americanism has run unchecked abroad, I am happy to see American starting to get some of its due for serving (at great cost) as the world's policeman and an unappreciated force for peace.

Posted by: jhw539 | Oct 9, 2009 7:43:28 AM

Very strange! The nomination deadline was 12 days after the inauguration. Gee, after what he did in those 12 days, imagine what he could do in two terms. Cure cancer, end all conflict, make the neighbor's dog stop chasing my cat! What a joke!

Posted by: country cuz | Oct 9, 2009 7:44:20 AM

Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter, and Al Gore were also awarded Nobel Peace Prizes. 'Nuff said.

Posted by: Justin | Oct 9, 2009 7:45:44 AM

Loving that the wing nuts are now hating the Nobel Peace awards, laughable... what a pathetic bunch... Congratulation to this President... Diplomacy is one of the prime reasons I voted for Obama and I have been happy to witness his efforts to bring this nation back to a respectable position with our allies... it has been a beautiful thing to watch...

Posted by: theafalcon200 | Oct 9, 2009 7:46:07 AM

Once again the Nobel Committee proves they don't have the right to make such decisions. First it was Gore with his ecowhining BS,... now a vote for Neville Chamberlain on the eve of Hitler's invasion of Poland. Narcissism reigns supreme amongst the politico elite, despite their claims of wanting to help people,... just call him Presidente Narciso.

He can place it on the wall between his "ACORN Man of the Year" and "Chicago's Best Community Organizer" plaques.
Please tell us all you giddy people...WHAT DID HE DO TO DESERVE THIS AWARD???? Which countries are getting along better now? Chavez, Qadhafi, and Castro love the man. Is this enough to receive the award??
