GOP's Undeclared War Against Obama

October 27, 2009 11:30 AM

We may be more focused on the partisan wrangling over health care and troop commitments in Afghanistan, but as Slate's David Kendall points out, the parties are at a stalemate in a less visible way as well.

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor's nomination sailed through the Senate without much of a political fight. But according to Kendall's count, only three of Obama's 22 lower court nominees have been confirmed so far. Two more were approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee in early June and still have not received a floor vote.

Legislative delay-tactics over federal judgeships are nothing new. Both sides of the aisle have engaged in such wrangling for years. But Kendall argues the Republican party is taking these delays to a new level.

What do you think?

What does the GOP stand for?

Posted by: Huh | Oct 27, 2009 11:42:15 AM

GOP = Grandpop Oops Pants...again

Posted by: day | Oct 27, 2009 11:47:37 AM

I remember Ms Pelosi publicly stating that they would not cooperate with George W Bush in his final 2 years so that they could wait until the Dems were in power. It seemed to set the tone.

Posted by: Jeff | Oct 27, 2009 11:48:27 AM

That is about right. I ran for a delegate position in NM within the GOP, and I was definitely out of place being that I was under 50.

Posted by: Huh | Oct 27, 2009 11:48:52 AM

Of course it's a GOP undeclared war. They lost big over the years and can't come to terms with the fact that the American people largely don't agree with their party line.

Posted by: Garrett | Oct 27, 2009 11:51:56 AM

Why is there so much vehemence? I don't get it. It seems like spoiled rich kids not getting their way.

I've always seen tactics like this as a polarizing. Is that the desire?

Posted by: Bernie | Oct 27, 2009 11:52:59 AM

I'm sure that Doug Kendall at Slate is a paragon of balanced information. There's always three sides to every argument. Yours, mine, and the facts.

Posted by: Dave Lambert | Oct 27, 2009 11:55:28 AM

George:

Admit it: you're too biased to continue as White House correspondent.

Why don't you cover some real issues instead on helping Obama to portray himself as a victim?

Posted by: tina | Oct 27, 2009 11:58:21 AM

"What do you think?"

What do you think?!?! How about reporting REALITY. Geeze, this is not difficult fact checking folks. The reality, supported by facts in the article, is that Republicans are not content to just set a third consecutive record for filibustering. They are now shutting down the judiciary in an unprecedented fashion, and it is a direct tactic of causing harm to America's institutions with the intent of blaming Democrats.

Why doesn't ABC bother reporting the news? It's OK to do your own reporting even if Slate is the one that broke this; some good folks have come out of Slate into 'real' news.

Tina, that's neither smart, nor helpful and while Pelosi's comment about no cooperation with W. in his final 2 years is entirely accurate...many could argue it was also not entirely unwarranted, if you get my meaning....meanwhile with this administration, young as it is still, it kind of seems like the GOP has become the Grand Obstructionist Party simply because they can...or because they can think of nothing else to do it. Like a toddler in a tantrum...what do you do when you're not getting your way? Dig in your heels & become dead weight that parents then have to haul out of the store....

Posted by: Lisa | Oct 27, 2009 12:06:19 PM

Hey Steffy, it's about Socialism, it's not about Emperor O'Babble. You think he'd be getting this opposition if he were a Conservative or even a so called Moderate ? Yeah, yeah,I know it's hard for an old Clinton hack to understand.

Dave Lambert | Oct 27, 2009 11:55:28 AM

Mr Kendall provides a great number of facts that support his side. Do you find any that are false?

Posted by: jhw539 | Oct 27, 2009 12:07:40 PM

I don't see Prez Obama "portraying" himself as a victim....never! It doesn't and Won't happen....now to the story......These inept idiots continues to believe they are in the Civil War era. Of course... they declared War on this President before he even sat in the Oval office. When he attempted to build a working relationship with these idiots....they sat back with a "smirk" on their face...the "little boys" need to take their "toys" and go home. Their "strategies" have not, Will not work....the American people are not blinded by lies, fear, hate or anger. That is the Majority, I'm speaking about. After Obama gets through some of main agendas of the American people...more is to be revealed. I can't wait. Slowly, strategic, focused and strong, Mr. President.

I would like to know from you and from ABC where is the outrage when the President of the United States banishes a news organization "Fox News" from the White House? He refers to them as not a news program. Excuse me? And MSNBC is a un-bias news program? No matter what your opinion is in politics, the reason we live and love our country is because it's not part of a controlled dictatarship run by someone like Chavez. Or am I wrong?

Posted by: Wanda | Oct 27, 2009 12:11:11 PM

now its news when the republicans do it.

Posted by: hashman | Oct 27, 2009 12:20:15 PM

Sara - Civil War Era - Republicans had the white house. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. Just so thankful for the awesome example of working together the Dems showed for President Bush. Oh, but that's right, he was wrong so you didn't have to suppport him.
Have you thought that we might just simply think President Obama is wrong? Why don't we get to make up our own mind - why are your opinions better than ours?

Posted by: kay | Oct 27, 2009 12:21:02 PM

I think that the WH has a war going on with itself at this point.

Posted by: Thinking | Oct 27, 2009 12:23:28 PM

"I would like to know from you and from ABC where is the outrage when the President of the United States banishes a news organization "Fox News" from the White House?"
Wanda | Oct 27, 2009 12:11:11 PM

Fox has not been banished from the White House, they still have their press credentials and Major Garrett is still in the press briefings (unless a different reporter is covering for him).

Seriously, what is up with this paranoid exageration from Republicans? Why can't you just stick to reality?

Posted by: jhw539 | Oct 27, 2009 12:24:51 PM

First of all the President of the United States did not "banish" Faux News from the White House....Major still works as it's White House correspondance. And if he did, that's no more than Bush did to MSNBC, or Dan Rather...remember??? Now Faux News is just that a 'fake' arse station masqurading as a 'news" station...MSNBC has Matthews, Maddow, Olberman, Ed but has never "presented" themselves as "NEWS"....what "news" person will ever call "the President of the United States" a Racist, Nazi, Hitler, Terrorist, Muslim (derogatory) and used "screaming" as an attention getter for the elderly who are hard of hearing, and "shout" fear, fear, fear to them...Now, if you know of a legitimately U.S. news media and organization that has EVER did this or said these types of things about the "President of the United States", you need to be naming them so maybe you and the likes will be validated. I noticed you used Faux News lingo..."dictatorship" and Chavez in the same sentence....this is the SH! that you people do and then try and hide your hands.....They got it right!!!!! They're NOT a NEWS Organization. They are a Republican arm broadcasting opinions and fear tactics over our airwaves...they are disgusting as Springer, Jerry that is, to take advantage of Ignorance and uneducated people for their gains.

Posted by: sara | Oct 27, 2009 12:25:06 PM

Lisa - It is weird, but Beck is probably the most interesting talk show host on air. I can't stand others from the right and left, but Beck is all right. I got to have something to listen to on the way home.

Posted by: Huh | Oct 27, 2009 12:26:38 PM

Where is ANY evidence the GOP has taken the judicial nomination process to any different level than the Dem. Party? And for the Dems, I got news for you - the "folks" don't like YOUR policies or your people, any better than they do the GOP. You are all pond scum. I'd like to see EVERYONE thrown out and let's start over. Maybe we can find some candidates who will put their country first, their country second and their country third.

Posted by: Mike | Oct 27, 2009 12:29:41 PM

kay...by all means keep your opinions, because at the end of the day.....like a......., we all have one. And this country was "quite different" as to why I mentioned the civil war era...and to be clear...the Republican party has nothing to offer America, if they did why is it taking sooooo long.

Posted by: sara | Oct 27, 2009 12:29:44 PM

didn't the democrats do this for like 8 years with bush? did george report on that? drivel and tripe!

Posted by: davidfrat21 | Oct 27, 2009 12:34:05 PM

The Republicans, as has already been stated, are acting the spoiled child part. the rich are not happy. where do the republicans get their money? poor kids. they think that by completely disrupting the government they can get their way during the next election. the american public is no longer as blind as it was a few years ago. beck and his chums (rush) as selling hate, fear, ignorance, lies, and a host of other emotions. they are not dealing in facts or logic. listen to the arguments. you won't hear logic or facts. you hear socialism, government control, interference, and arguments that play on people's emotions. Wanda, above, uses "controlled dictatorship". where are her facts to support this? If you would like to see a real dictatorship maybe you should visit Sudan for a while. there are a number of them and Gee Dub didn't get them all. Just one puny, defenseless one.
