Roundtable: Huffington Says Pelosi Should Tell Rangel to ‘Step Down’

October 11, 2009 11:54 AM

Arianna Huffington told me this morning on our roundtable that Speaker Pelosi should tell W&M Chairman Charlie Rangel to step down … as early as Monday morning.

“They should decide it on Monday morning,” Huffington said. “He should step down from his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee if they want to improve their chances for 2010. Otherwise, they might see their approval rating come down to single digits.”

Here’s how the rest of the roundtable weighed in:

WILL:  Charlie Rangel is a genuine war hero, a delightful person, intelligent and a good committee chairman, but his committee writes the tax laws.  And there are some niggling people out there who think those who write the tax laws ought to abide by them.  Seventy-five thousand dollars in -- in income that taxes were not paid on.  He underestimated by about half his assets on his disclosure form to Congress.  Do the rules mean anything at all?

BRAZILE:  Well, Mr. Rangel has admitted his mistakes, and he has called for this inquiry.  I don't think we should adjudicate this on the House or Senate floor, in terms of Mr. Ensign.  You know, there are other investigations.

Watch the our FULL discussion HERE.

I try to watch the show weekly, but I can't get past how Huffington and Brazile severely impact the credibility of the show. It is really difficult to understand what Donna Brazile has to say.....her head is so far up Mr. Obama's ass she can't see or speak clearly. Arianna Huffington is just so unintelligent she is embarrassing to women! She should just not appear in public.

Please correct me, but remember the unmitigated GLEE the Democrats felt when Tom Delay stepped down on the acusation of wrong doing when Republicans ran the roost? Now that the truth-seeking, transparetn Democrats are running the show, fellows like Rangel sit in a legal limbo, "he's being investigated", but at a pace that falls short of "glacial"...

And for those keeping score, he is STILL awaiting his trial for breaking laws that didn't exist at the time...

Finally, Katrina Vanden Houvel adds so little to the show when she's on it makes me wonder why I'm still watching. Car Crash effect perhaps? (Can't help but watch?)

So Republicans are still stuck on the "Messiah theme". Too funny.

Wow. Donna Brazile is so enraptured with Obama, it's sad. She can't even say anything that is intelligent or makes any sense. She just keeps repeating hope and change, hope and change, talking about "the movement".. it's creepy. She speaks religiously about Obama, and that's something that the office of the Presidency was never meant to inspire. She's exactly the problem with this country.. Obama doesn't even need to do anything, and Donna is sold. Sad.

Donna Brazile - The original "I've Got a Crush on Obama" girl.

"This leadership team will create the most honest, most open, and most ethical Congress in history" - Speaker-Elect Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Press Release, November 16, 2006

We're still waiting, Nancy!

"You are the instruments that God is going to use to bring about universal change, and that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn't care anything about. That's a sign. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking. Brothers and sisters, Barack Obama to me, is a herald of the Messiah. Barack Obama is like the trumpet that alerts you something new, something better is on the way." - Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, February 24, 2008

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW JUST MANY YEARS HAS HE BEEN DOING THIS IS IT ONE TIME OR OVER YEARS HE HAS TO GO OUR CONGRESS THINK THEY CAN DO NO WORNG AS THERY ARE NOT LIKE US WE ARE JUST SOME OF THE STUF THEY WALK ON

Posted by: martin ferrante | Oct 11, 2009 1:35:30 PM

I would like to see this go even further because his salary surely does not figure to be able to afford all these properties. Do you think it could be from special intrests groups Nah not from the transparent Dems. Heck look at Pelosi she took care of her 17 million dollars worth of stock she owns in Starkist by prohibiting American Samoa to receive the same minimum wage increase as everyone else in order to keep labor costs down for Starkist and have a price edge on their competition. But yet the libs approve of this type of human rights violations. So that is why I no longer believe a word that comes out of their mouths they are all self serving people looking out for themselves.

After reading all today's comments, I think it's time to re-think having Donna Brazile on the show. It would be nice to see some fresh opinons on the show, not just an Obama lover.

Posted by: L.Ward | Oct 11, 2009 1:37:57 PM

Donna Brazil does criticize the President, I watch the FULL show and don't make my mind up on sound bites! That said, I don't like Rangel, the man is dirty in my opinion. But, he called for the investigation so we'll see what happens. Unlike Mr. Ensign who believes that what he has done should just be forgotten, or Sanford who used public funds to see his mistress. What I'm saying is there are enough "supposed" law breakers on BOTH sides. Lets let the investigations play out and see what happens.

The most important points were Arianna's about jailing the banksters to reform the whole basis of our economy & a call for the end of our Noe-colonial aspirations in Afghanistan as a start to a new diplomacy. Unfortunatly the rest of the guests & the host were content to throw mudballs from inside the DC sandbox. Huffington, you are a brave soul even if your discourse will likely go over a lot of peoples heads, I appreciate it.

Well, it only took the demorats 3 years to rid themselves of William "Cold Cash" Jefferson. I give Bahama Charlie another 2 years. If they dump him, the entire Black Congressional Congress will barricade Pelosi inside her office. BTW, don't we love how the only conservative on the panel is the meek G. Will? He reminds me of that dog professor who wore bow-ties on "Rocky and Bullwinkle." Sounds the same, too.

Holding a Democrat accountable for their actions... NEVER!!! Welcome to the new Amerika!!! Where both parties are above the law, and your left begging for mercy!!! You get only the politicans you support, and thus deserve!!! The blame lies with you, and you ALONE!!! Amerika!!!

Posted by: jafo | Oct 11, 2009 4:04:03 PM

I generally watch these programs and find the discussion to be (pardon the expression) fair and balanced. However, the "rock star" treatment of Mr. Obama by certain round-table members is outlandish and in bad taste. The pendulum has swung too far left and has now jeopardized the continued existence of our founding fathers democratic form of consitutional government. Bottom line: Rangel must NOT be given preferential treatment for any reason. He is after all a citizen of this country that must abide by the laws and standards of the society he serves as a member of congress. Anything less than that is a travesty of justice.

Posted by: Chip N Putter | Oct 11, 2009 6:01:46 PM

I think Brazile should recommend Rangel to the Nobel Committee for the Economics Award.

Posted by: Sharon | Oct 11, 2009 8:07:18 PM

ABC is not functioning as a watchdog for the public but as a wing of the Democrat Party. This is why they have lost so much credibility as a news organization. If the Democrats want an advertisement each week, they should have to buy time and call it a commercial.

George,
I tune into the show to hear serious discussions. Having Arriana Huffington on your panel is embarrassing. I almost felt bad for George Will having to sit at the same table with her. Does she live on tis planet?
As for Donna Brazile...tell her and the rest of the liberals that "symbolism" gets us nowhere.
This is America's problem right now. We've got children running the country.

Posted by: Frank | Oct 11, 2009 9:25:22 PM

I would have to disagree on some of the above comments regarding Donna and Arriana. They are both very intelligent women but they look at things from a different perspective as many men.

Donna does wear the cloak of loyalty rather well when it comes to President Obama but that is her right. Arriana, I can't figure out where she is 1/2 of the time but she is a remarkable woman.

Posted by: JR Jake | Oct 11, 2009 9:56:01 PM

George...
Was impressed with much of what Arriana said today, but Donna continues to say things that the president has already backed away from:

1) she repeated the president's claim "you can keep your health policy if you like it" when it is clear to everyone this is impossible to promise. Over 75% of the insured are insured by their employers and they have no say in what provider (if any) their employer chooses. The Whitehouse website has rephrased this as "the plan will not force you to change". This is contracting out to the employer the job of denying continuation of a current plan so the president can avoid responsibility.

2) we heard again about the 47 Million "without healthcare" when they actually are covered by free healthcare in emergency rooms? That number had to revise downward to 30M "without insurance" because the president will not cover illegals under the government plan. And this is still knowingly deceptive since the Supreme Court has ruled that the government cannot offer a benefit to one "class" without including all "persons" in the country. No matter how the law is written, the Supreme Court will add in the illegals, unless we have a constitutional amendment (impossible). Again the president is claiming something that he well knows he cannot deliver, with assurance that someone else will take the blame.... in this case, the Justices.

I could go on and on because the president has been outstanding in providing us many such examples in a minimum of time in office.... but I'd be wasting our time. You know them as well as I do.

Unless they can come up with convincing reversal to the doubts these "errors" create, us independents will throw the Democrats out of office faster than we threw out the Republicans.

Donna must realize this. She should be helping the administration come to grips with these "errors" and present a way out of the internal warfare into a unified strategy for governance that the American people can get behind.

The Lobbyist's are out in force, throwing money at anyone that will listen to them.Trying to pass the Obama Care package of insane requirements.Nothing like watching your country go to hell in a hand basket.Obama is one of the richest men in America now.He has his own personal money machine.Maybe Congress should have to use Medicare instead of their existing policy's...Rangle is a Democrat,so he is totally safe;also he is of ethnic persuasion,so that's another :"Get out of jail free card".

Posted by: Will | Oct 12, 2009 12:17:35 PM

Ohhh, also Huffington and intelligence is an oxymoron.Mmmm Mmmmm Mmmm

Posted by: Will | Oct 12, 2009 12:20:31 PM

KARL Q: Donna Brazile isn't interested in helping the administration come to grips with any errors - only in glorifying the WONDERS of OBAMA, the JOYS of the DEMOCRATIC PARTY . . . and the denigration of ANYTHING having to do with the Republican Party. The shame of it is, there are SO many out there (affiliated with BOTH parties) who do this: attack the other side simply to do so - NOT in any attempt to better this country. The days of STATESMEN is long dead - they're all POLITICIANS today, looking to increase their own power & line their pockets.

Posted by: MoreNMore | Oct 12, 2009 1:22:10 PM

MoreNMore: You are correct that far too many on both sides consider politics merely a substitute for football when it is out of season. They cheer mindlessly for their team and take no notice of the players switching teams or the billionares behind the curtins who pull the strings. The manipulators care about making sure the audience is entertained (so millions flow into their coffers each season.) It is a shame, a sham, and a shocking abortion of the constitution.
