Schwarzenegger Endorses Obama Health Care Effort

October 06, 2009 10:25 AM

First there was Frist (sort of). Then Thompson. Then Bloomberg.

And today Arnold Schwarzenegger will become the latest high-profile (non-Senate) Republican to sign on to the health care plans pushed by President Obama.

Here's the statement:

For Immediate Release:

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Governor Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on National Push for Health Care Reform

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today issued the following statement urging the passage of health care reform at the national level:

“As Governor, I have made significant efforts to advance health reform in California. As the Obama Administration was launching the current debate on health care reform, I hosted a bipartisan forum in our state because I believe in the vital importance of this issue, and that it should be addressed through bipartisan cooperation.

“Our principal goals, slowing the growth in costs, enhancing the quality of care delivered, improving the lives of individuals, and helping to ensure a strong economic recovery, are the same goals that the president is trying to achieve. I appreciate his partnership with the states and encourage our colleagues on both sides of the political aisle at the national level to move forward and accomplish these vital goals for the American people.

Still waiting for Olympia Snowe...

Isn't California bankrupt?

So, yes, let's get behind Arnold on this one too...

Yes, well that just means, as a GOP'er, that he believes the profits in health care, should survive reform.

Thus, Obama has accomplished nothing, as there will be no reductions in health care costs.

It's amazing that those who back Obamacare are ones whose states/communities are economic failures!

Posted by: Legalette | Oct 6, 2009 11:14:19 AM

Swartznegger seems to forget that he vetoed a fully vetted single-payer bill passed by both houses of the Californiia legislature (SB840)twice, in 2007 and 2008. The same bill will be on his desk this year (SB810). Will he sign it to make California the first state with Health Care For ALL, or continue representing his insurence company donors?

George, please. This is not an endorsement of the Obama plan per se (whatever that is), but a broad endorsement of principles that everyone agrees are important. It's akin to endorsing mom and apple pie and it should carry the same weight.

The insurance companies are some of the worst I've ever seen, on the backs of many sick helpless people they keep their pockets open for more and more, I wonder if they have a heart, or is it that they are the bottomless pit, I honor the Governor of California. Since the health care industry could care less about a person then maybe they should be driven out of business.

Thank You for the opportunity

CA would not be the first state with health care for all. I have the feeling that Pelosi (this is her state) must have worn out the knees in her hose to get Arnold to put this out.

Posted by: James L. | Oct 6, 2009 11:34:23 AM

Wow! Another sell out by ABC News trying to mislead the people! This isn't support of Obamacare!

Posted by: Chris | Oct 6, 2009 11:58:36 AM

Nice to see that there is at least one Republican who is not an obstructionist who simply says NO to anything President Obama tries to do.

Still waiting for the Republican plan!

Arnie is sinking and will grab anything that even remotely looks like a life jacket. He's dead wrong, of course.

Obama....

The constant lying.
The staggering arrogance.
The dangerous narcissism.
The astounding incompetence.

The Obama Buffoon wants to put as much of the private economy under government control as possible to create his nanny state utopia where he is the boy king.

Let's continue to stand strong against Obama in every way and get Congress out of the hands of the insane Pelosi and Reid in 2010.

Obama is a smug, smirking con man. Nothing more.

Posted by: Jackson | Oct 6, 2009 12:16:49 PM

It doesnt appear Arnie even mentions the current paln but endorses the idea of reform. Lets see what he says when congressional plan details are made public, which they seem to try and hide from our eyes.

Posted by: ObamaOgabe | Oct 6, 2009 12:22:52 PM

Republican Plan. It exists, reading something that challenges your train of thought.

Posted by: David | Oct 6, 2009 12:27:02 PM

why try to change a system that works perfectly now? sure, insurance companies deny care to the critically ill, but hey, it's that person's fault for getting sick in the first place, right? my fear is that obama will cut into insurance executives $260 million salaries. they're the real victims here. (sigh)

Posted by: otis | Oct 6, 2009 12:31:50 PM

To Rodney: The Republicans have offered several health care reform bills, along with numerous amendments to bills that Democrats have proposed in the Senate and House. But the "mainstream media" has refused to cover this legislation, so people like you can tell the world it doesn't exist. That's convenient!

Figures that RINO Arnie would support ObamaCare. Just look what Arnie has done for California's economy. Wonder if he's still hoping to snuggle up to Barry and get a 'bailout'.

Posted by: GarandFan | Oct 6, 2009 12:36:08 PM

You think that governor of a state that is in a colossal fiscal mess would see the insanity in increasing federal spending at this time?

Posted by: Steve | Oct 6, 2009 12:42:56 PM

Looks like his wife cut him off! if you know what I mean....

Posted by: batesba74 | Oct 6, 2009 12:43:51 PM

Goodbye Arnold......

Posted by: Tina | Oct 6, 2009 12:50:28 PM

great to see a leader and a Republican who puts his country before his party.

Posted by: kenneth | Oct 6, 2009 12:58:16 PM

Every reasonable American knows this is the best and right thing to do in our country....no country is "strong" militarily or financially if the people that Makes that country aren't physically well.......if you're not physically well, then you're not mentally. California is just like all other states.......with a big chunk of money going to the private insurance companies that do not make it's citizens better.......they're just draining the "wells" of these states. But, the cynical will continue to be happy as the status quo, afraid of change. My parents told me years ago, that the only "constant" thing in this life is Change. Everything and everybody must change....

The bill coming out of the Senate Finance Committee is written by the insurance, pharmaceutical and hospital lobbies. It needs fixing.

Posted by: 1percenter | Oct 6, 2009 1:16:57 PM

Hey George, I respect you and watch your show every Sunday. We the people need you to ask and press for a real answer to the following question: Why is it that Congress will not post all bills being voted on for a period of 2 weeks in their FINAL version. This would allow the congressmen, the public, the media and the opresident to read it and weed out all of the corruption built into these huge bills. I would love to hear the president's take on it too. He proclaimed he will be the most transparent administration ever, and so far it has ben the direct opposite.

Posted by: Tony T | Oct 6, 2009 1:18:30 PM

Medicare denis more treatments than all of the insurance companies combined, so all of you people voicing the Dems line of reasoning, they are LYING to you.

The Medicare denial rate found in the study was, on a weighted average basis, roughly 1.7 times that of all of the private carriers combined (99,025 divided by 2,447,216 is 4.05%; 6.85% divided by 4.05% =1.69).

You would think Medicare's sheer size might enable it to have smoother procedures with its providers that would enable it to turn down a lower percentage of claims. But no, this is the government we're talking about.

So who's the most "heartless" now? And why should Americans accept the idea of gradually being forced into a government-run system when, based on documented government experience, they will be more likely to see their claims denied?

And I didn't even get to the idea of refusals to treat in the first place, something that is present to some degree in virtually every state-run system, but is currently against the law in hospital emergency rooms in the U.S.

Posted by: Tony T | Oct 6, 2009 1:21:13 PM

Of course Arnold supports it. His state is bankrupt, and he is begging for money from Obama.

Posted by: wheresmymoney | Oct 6, 2009 1:27:17 PM

What, specifically is our Governor endorsing? Does he approve a federal mandate for individuals to purchase health insurance? Does he approve the idea of premiums for seniors being as much as 5 times the premiums for others? Does he approve the idea that people should pay up to 13% of their incomes for health insurance? We do not know what it is exactly that the Governor is endorsing. Please get some facts before writing another article.
