Afghanistan: Abdullah Withdrawal Won't Complicate Obama's Strategy -- His Decision Could Slip

November 01, 2009 10:02 AM

Top counselor to the President, Valerie Jarrett, offered the first White House comment on Afghanistan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah’s withdrawal from the run-off election scheduled for next weekend, saying that it will not further complicate the U.S. strategy in the region.

Jarrett also acknowledged to me this morning that the President’s long awaited decision on Afghanistan could slip to late November. “The President will make a decision when he is confident he has all the facts he needs,” she said, this morning on 'This Week.'

How can Valerie Jarrett separate "American people" and "Republicans?" She claims the President and Democrats will listen to and collaborate with Republicans, but ultimately they represent the American people? Since when did Republicans become non-Americans?

Having Al Sparpton on a news show is ridiculous. You lose a lot of credibility this way.

George, Why do you have people like Jarrett on? She was a waste of air time. She isn't an adviser she only repeats Obama's words. I would rather she say what her wisdom to Obama is and why. They keep saying this is an open presidential term but there is nothing open about it. I certainly don't need to know top secrete or security issues. I get comments about Fox News. Give me a break. I watch what I like and turn the channel if I don't. Thanks for reading my comment. Sincerely, Barbara

Now that Abdullah Abdullah has dropped out, Doug Hoffman is a shoo-in.

If he had a strategy, watch them begin to try to discredit general McCrystal next, he has a strategy.

Obama needs facts? What has he been doing all this time. BS some one else, the fact is Obama doesn't have the guts to do anything. Need facts? Con some one else and stop trying to con the American people. Iran will gets its way if he can't handle this. LOSER

Its nice to see one blog that isn't inundated with payed ACORN shills. We see you.

Seriously, as a spokesperson for the administration, Jarrett is as about adroit as an oyster on a half shell.

Posted by: Michael | Nov 1, 2009 2:56:23 PM

Why? What more info does the President need?? Where's it going to come from?? I don't agree with John McCain about everything but I totally agree that with each passing day we are unneccessarily putting lives in harm's way. What more could there be to know before making a decision?

Posted by: Monica | Nov 1, 2009 3:25:32 PM

President got called out in public with real facts about the need for more troops and it ticked him off. He has the power to stall and that is what he is doing. So sad and so dangerous for us.

"Won't complicate Obama's strategy." This is as about as moronic as it gets. I can't believe they let this woman out of the house given her propensity toward stupidity in past interviews.

Posted by: Michael | Nov 1, 2009 7:40:21 PM

I really found the blather about whether the President's visit to Dover was about politics to be stupid and misguided. Particularly George Will was totally misinformed about the events at Dover. As the step-father of one of the DEA special agents who died Monday, I can tell you that the event was not about politics, the discussions with families were private, and the President and Attorney General showed compassion and sensitivity. I can't speak for all the families but it was comforting to have them come to Dover, showing respect for all the young men who died.

Republicans "becoming more extreme?"...Sheesh how about Democrats becoming more left of center. "Reaching out...?" Yeah, how about reaching out and taking our money. Nothing like fair and balanced, right George?

Posted by: CodeWarrior | Nov 2, 2009 9:52:01 AM

Abdullah Abdullah's pull out is important because it shows that corruption wins elections. I don't see how Karzai can be seen as fully legitimate and that makes supporting his government really hard. That makes winning a counter-insurgent campaign REALLY hard. We should be looking at other options.

What a liar Pres Obama is! Just look at this - Afghanistan now HAS a President... and Obummer still won't make a decision... Says he needs even more facts... ??? What the heck has he been doing???? Oh... yeah... that's right -- playing golf and campaigning... That is all he knows how to do.

I thought that Emanuel said that Obama's strategy depended on a more friendly govt. in Afghanistan and now Jarrett says that it doesn't. Either there is no strategy except Obama's perennial testing the wind and voting present or this election mess really does affect their strategy. It also points out the fact that our strategy should have been independent in the first place, thinking about our troops first, what McChrystal wanted. Just more of Obama blowin' in the wind, no moral compass, voting present, drifter in chief.

Why is Valerie Jarrett the "expert" commenting for the president?

Why isn't our Secretary-of-State Hillary Clinton, being interviewed instead? What is her opinion. Where is Robert Gates opinion?

This WH is quite the spin machine.

Posted by: littleleers | Nov 4, 2009 2:02:27 PM

How could it complicate Obama's strategy, he doesn't have one yet. Now we have to wait until late Nov? August 2009 more deaths than any month since 2001 in Afghanistan. October 2009, even more deaths than in August. I guess Obama is going for the trifecta in November. There is no excuse for his indecisiveness....period.

Posted by: lfrichar | Nov 4, 2009 3:49:13 PM

Obama lied when he said he had a strategy for Afghanistan earlier this year. Why am I surprised?

Posted by: lfrichar | Nov 4, 2009 3:50:40 PM

Obama's strategy? Which one would that be?
He said he had a strategy for the last year. Now he is saying he doesn't have a strategy. Obama doesn't know what he is doing.!!

I am a wife of a Marine who is waiting for the so called president to make a decision. he needs to hurry up. my husband is wanting to go help out the other troops. is obama waiting for more troops to die be fore he makes his decison. it is completely moronic!!!!!

Posted by: brajac06 | Nov 5, 2009 9:31:31 AM

Obama was briefed of both battle fronts when he was elected and before he took office. Now it has been a year and all of this has caught him by surprise and he does not know what to do (??????).

We are in trouble on everything.

This president has absolutely BETRAYED the troops in Afghanistan! The American people should demand he DO HIS JOB instead of sitting on his hands. Geez, Bush was awful, but this president is the worst leader we have ever had. Simply becuase he will not lead!!!

Posted by: Miles | Nov 5, 2009 6:51:38 PM

How we can change America if most of you always opposing the governance of any Administration. We should trust our government. If we don't have trust we will not succeed in our goals. Too much for criticizing Obama. I am not one of his constituents. I am also against some of his programs and manangement. But,its not right that we judge him.
