Coming Up: A 'This Week' Exclusive: Kaine vs Steele
November 06, 2009 9:41 AM
Another dismal jobs report with unemployment at 10.2%...the highest rate in 26 years. The economy is the issue – a fact born out in last Tuesday’s elections. We’ll take a look at those elections with our exclusive headliners – Republican Chairman Michael Steele and Democratic Chairman Tim Kaine. The two party leaders will debate the impact of the elections, the economy, and health care as house democrats prepare to vote this weekend for their big health care reform bill. The question weighing on Democrats and Republicans this weekend - who’s poised to win in 2010 and beyond? We’ll also get the latest information on the tragic mass shooting at Fort Hood.
Our roundtable debates all the week’s politics – joining me Sunday George Will, Cokie Roberts, Sam Donaldson, Donna Brazile and Republican consultant Frank Luntz.
We’ll see you then.

***The question weighing on Democrats and Republicans this weekend - who’s poised to win in 2010 and beyond?***
Which shows how out of touch both national parties are with the needs of the citizenry they are supposed to represent.
Out elected representatives seem to be devolving into bureaucrats. They need to be replaced before they cause any more trouble than they already have.

I'm not sure if bobtherepublican is referring to both parties .... sounds like it & I have to agree.
George, Michael Steele is going to be on ??? .... I don't know if I can watch. I am not a fan of his. I've felt he was more a figure head for the GOP ... honestly, I think the GOP is using him, however, he gets paid so guess it's a fair trade .... although his view of the the NY23 district election impressed me. Still can't stand to see him or hear him .... maybe he'll impress me on your show. I hope he's reasonable.

Having served in Iraq and counseled at the Mental Health clinic there; outdoors I might add (by a cigar smoking officer and psychiatrist) I recommend the military get out of the mental health business. Why would we think the military would be the best entity to take care of the emotional needs of soldiers?? THAT'S CRAZYY! They should stick to their primary focus preparing soldiers to perform their jobs to defend our country. The military should contract with civilians for supporting soldiers emotionally before, during and after war.

George Will is going to loose what is left of his republican mind . when the light comes on in his head and takes the blinders off.. suprise is going to be ,the republican party as we know it will never be the same again. changing times have created splinters of several smaller groups challanging each other to be the new top GOP . from the tea party radicals to the ultra conservatives . and the list goes on and on .. the biggest problem right now is in having sarah Palin even be allowed to be considered a republican in any shape or form .. she is in herself a radical self serving pot sturing party destroyer.. and that opens the door for the independants to begin to take the lead over the old republican white party.. so the independants will become the new republican party . but won't have enough to take back the rule from the democrates.. so George Will times are changing and you need to open your eyes .ONE WOULD THINK YOU OF ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BE INSUPPORT OF WHAT THE PRESIDENT IS TRYING TO DO FOR OUR NATION . and this president will be known for passing a health care program for the people by the people and not for your buddies the insurance industry .. pandoras box is opening and you can't stop it .. looking at the way the insurance industry has tried to blits the media tells me that fear has come to the insurance companies and life as they have known it will change forever. and that my freind is a good thing :)

What the figures do not show is how much Higher the figures of New Unemployment per thousands was in December 2008 thru January 2009 before Obama, and How much Lower in the figures of New unemployment per thousand were every month since including last month.
The Republicans do Not tell how the figures of New unemployment has been going down every month this year.
Nor do the Republicans tell of how many of the Extended unemployment benefit numbers are included in their findings.
Yet if it were a Republican administration we all know there would be No unemployment benefit extensions at all. So all of you who are unemployed and whose benefits were extended, those of us engineers who lost their jobs to outsourcing in 2002 say, do not be fooled by the Republican figures.
The Republicans are the ones who fought against extending unemployment benefits. The Republicans are the ones who gave financial incentives to steal American High Tech jobs. The Republicans are the ones who signed bills and legislation weakening the hands of those incharge of overseeing the financial institutions that created this whole mess in the first place.

Steele better get his act together and start acting like an energized opposition leader because we are in serious trouble. Use the facts and keep hammering at them.
All of the lies need to be called out and the real work of tort reform has got to be addressed BEFORE healthcare legislation, not after.
This country is falling into the toilet and the coming meltdown with the dollar & monetizing of our revolving debt is going to happen very soon if immediate action is not taken.
That does not mean adding 3 trillion dollars to the national debt is a good idea.
Posted by: Calib | Nov 7, 2009 2:14:50 PM
Bob and Linda, I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm wondering who our elected representatives are representing. It's certainly not us. The republicans are short of vigilantes and the democrats are weak. This is not governing on either side. Maybe it is time for a sweep?
Posted by: jks | Nov 7, 2009 2:15:01 PM
Calib: but handing Bush blank checks for a useless war that helped raise the national debt was OK??
Posted by: zane | Nov 7, 2009 3:24:01 PM
I sure hope you ask Kaine about Obamas promise to not sign any bill that is higher than 900 billion, or is there some lie he can tell that will legitimize this 1.3 trillion or if you look close at the figures it rises to 1.8 trillion double his promise.

REPUBLICAN GAME PLAN FOR AMERICA AFTER THE NOVEMBER 2008 ELECTION--
Captain Limbarf:"Leftenants Bohner and Steele"!!
Bohner and Steele: "SIR"!!
Captain Limbarf: "It appears that the Democrats have won fair and square and are boarding the good ship America".
Bohner and Steele:"Yes sir"!
Captain Limbarf:"Well Leftenants, there is only one thing left to do in the finest Conservative tradition"
Bohner and Steele:"Yes sir Captain, you mean hand over the rudder to them and wish them God speed"??
Captain Limbarf:"NO! Scuttle the ship"!!

Huge, huge democratic party mistake last night.
We need a viable third party. Neither dems or repubs are interested in serving the people any more.
Posted by: jan | Nov 8, 2009 9:08:56 AM
George!
Good God, please control those two buffoons (Steele and Kaine)! If you can't moderate the conversation, then why do you bother putting makeup on to sit in front of the camera? Cut through the crap!
What a bunch of idiots.
Posted by: Patrick | Nov 8, 2009 9:20:23 AM
The Dems had a party last night? You darn right, and the Republicans took their "toys" and went home....anti-social behavior at best. The token Steele STILL don't get it! Have Wars (even unjust ones) Have Trillions....Americans without healthcare.....Have NOT!

Oh and by the way. That DNC celebratory email that I never subscribed to when I emailed them a couple of weeks ago?
I hit the unsubscribe button. It took me to the DNC website which told me I had reached an incorrect link. I tried a search for unsubscribe. It gave me nothing so I went back to my email site and put a block on anyone from the website. It would appear that dirty tricks are now par for the course from the DNC.

Why does no one make the point that the Republicans had 8 years prior to the mess we are in now and did nothing to stop it, in fact their policies are the ones that let us get to this point in the first place. And, their last minute bill they have finally come up with, will only effect about 3 million people with Health Insurance, and will cause everyone's health insurance to go up. Yet, people expect OBama to get us out of this in less than a year. We need to look back as well as "right now".
Posted by: Wayne | Nov 8, 2009 9:30:58 AM
You've got to be joking to have those two on your show. It was like watching two children in the sandbox saying that their shovel was shinier than the shovel of the other. The lack of substantive content was neither enlightening nor thought-provoking. All it did was depress me. The leaders of the two major parties in this country can't even sit down at a table together to talk and listen to each other. It would be nice for 'leaders' to show leadership qualitites.
In the future, it would be preferable if you could moderate when you have such people like that on your show. Makes me not want to watch to see you sitting by and smiling while they make fools of themselves.

George,
Many more exchanges like the one between Kaine and Steele and I'll be switching the channel to something less annoying like Rachel Ray.

George Will notes that insurance cannot state lines and says that socts the people more due to the lack of competition. Honestly, the cost of health insurance in NJ is higher than South Dakota. Any company that wants to do business in NJ can file rates and they should represent where NJ residents will seek out care. The prices will always reflect where you live because they have to otherwise the system will go broke due to the lack or revenue.

To Republican Chairman Michael Steele. I am an independent voter I will never vote for the Republican Party again in my life time because the Republican Party and John Bohner as idiotic, foolish, insane ideas about health care reform.
NOTHING IN THE GOP HEALTH CARE PLAN HELPS THE PEOPLE.
THE GOP HEALTH CARE PLAN HELPS THE INSURANCE COMPAINES ONLY!
WHAT JOHN BOHNER IS NOT TELLING IS THE JOB LOST REFERRING TO IS FOR THE INSURANCE COMPANIES IS WHAT HE AND THE GOP IS WORRY ABOUT PERIOD..
THE PRIVATE INSURANCE COMPANIES NEEDS TO TIGHTEN THERE BELTS ON SPENDING STOP PAYING CEO'S BIG BONUSES.
"YOU THE PRIVATE INSURANCE COMPANIES HAVE BEEN DENIED BY THE PEOPLE"!YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKING BETTER CARE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS AND THERE INSURANCE COVERAGE BY LOWERING INSURANCE PREMIUMS!
YOU SHOULD HAVE STOP THE DENIAL OF CLAIMS ON THE PEOPLE!
GREED GOT IN YOUR WAY!

Dear George: It has take Decades to make this Mess, and the Republicans are sticking to it! The President has to "unravel" this Mess, methodically to lead to "true wealth and strength" of our great nation....the republicans has counted on "superficial short-term fixes" and impulsivity for their agendas....motives....Votes! This is what has led to this huge Mess NOW...they still don't get it... Yes, I remember the "trickled-down" economics of the 1980's....the rug snatched from under the feet of Middle Class Americans by outsourcing their years of "loyality" to their jobs and companies...the breakdown of entire communities and families due to "latchkey" kids while both parents competed for their teenage kid's job at the local 'fast food" restaurant to just make "ends meet"....then I remember, the fast food chains popping up all over the place "creating" a service related economy....while making our country Sicker with their unhealthy foods....I remember the DEREGULATION of the large companies and our Financial Institutions. I remember WHEN contracts were binding (credit card companies couldn't change contracts in the middle of the game) Yes, I remember the "havoc" over Middle Class families, their communities and their children! I remember the greed associated with the outsourcing of good jobs for Americans to "third world" countries!!!!! Yes, George I'm old enough to REMEMBER THAT IT WERE THE DEMS WHO THOUGHT OF THE ELDERLY BACK IN 1935 AND AGAIN IN 1964. I REMEMBER..

Insurance doesn't pay for cosmetic surgery, why should it pay for abortion? Pregency is NOT an illness, it is a perfectly normal human condition.
Posted by: C Kessel | Nov 8, 2009 9:58:37 AM
YES... How could our country be so BLIND. And what were they thinking??? Change is Hard, especially when you have NOT identified the problem because of partisan divides and personal agendas....the Republicans remains in DENIAL driven by greed and "short-term fixes" that serves their own self-serving, selfish needs.

I just heard the Republican on the panel this am say he felt sorry for Indiana's Sen. Bayh - why? Does the rest of the world understand people in Indiana want Health Care Reform? We Do!! Do they understand that Sen. Bayh's wife, Susan, is on the board of Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals and WellPoint Insurance Co? Every time something in Congress uphelds the insurance industries' interest, he makes millions in stock options. He is corrupt and should have been voted out years ago. Wellpoint if the largest ins. company in the country - it's Anthem, BCBS and many others. Don't feel sorry for Bayh when he "has" to vote against his party and his president for health care reform. He's not a Democrat or Republican - he's a Bayhican!
Indiana Resident who can't stand him or Rep. Dan Burton.

I though Cokie Roberts & Sam Donaldson were journalists not Democratic consultants.
