Roundtable on Race: 'Obama Can't Walk On Water'

Since when has 47% to 53% been considered a "land slide" victory?

Also, all this use of the term "sobered" as in how Obama almost constantly uses the phrase "I was sobered by XYZ" or "it was a sobering experience" and now everyone is copying the phrase is quite revealing of something interesting just below the surface. It implies that prior to the "sobering" that they were ...hmm what is the opposite of "sober"? That they were intoxicated (drunk) ...yes that seems about right. Amazing to me that someone would imply that they themself were previously drunk but NOW they know better and have "sobered up". It's just a ridiculous turn of phrase.

Also there is no doubt that Obama and his admins have made race relations worse instead of better. Maybe the experience of being the first black US President that also makes things worse in that regard will prove to be a sobering experience to him once he's voted out of office.

Unfortunately, I agree with the poll numbers. Why else would threats to the President of the United States be up 400% since our 44th President was elected?

With our voters split nearly evenly, and partisan as ever; President George W. Bush was reviled by nearly 50% of the voters in the United States. President Bill Clinton had similar negative numbers with conservatives.

So even with two controversial predecessors, the latter also dragging down worldwide approval ratings, President Obama's taking the oath of office causes threats to go up 400%??

The only explaination for this is racism.

We have all seen the vile and putrid attacks by the right. Attacks void of any intelligence or common sense. To these people it does not matter what Obama does he is the Satan who is destroying America. I recognized this as what it is many months ago...Racism. There is a sub-culture of racism in this country that is nauseating to witness, and embarrassing to me as a white person.

Will he read the health care bill? Or does he just know what is in it,through divine intervention?

I am with Martin L King. It is all about character. The Obama Administration has from the first pitted one group of people against the other using code words from Chicago. Poor (blacks) against the Bankers (white). Poor (blacks) against the insurance (white). Poor (blacks) against the rich (white). Democrats (Blacks) against the Republicans (White). And so it goes.

He gets on Leno and says "I am Black." He could have said, "I am American." and embraced us all. He gets in the little rallies and use "home" speech (Black) to talk about the others (Whites).

What do you expect to happen? Maybe that the Americans will start dividing itself up using the color of their skin and remove all the forward progress that we have had to use blood, sweat and tears achieve? Do I have to move to the back of Obama's bus? NO, because I don't believe I have to. We should not be allow to use color as race identity. It is time to put the crayons back the in kindergarten box and BE the American Race.

As long as the public refuse to educate themselves concerning the myth called race, is how long so-called race remains an issue and guys like Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have political prominence.

What's this nonsense about "walking on water."? Obama never made that claim. It's the idiotic pundits that keep making this stuff up. Obama is a human being with a phenomenal number of problems to cope with. He's doing an admirable job. Incidentally the $ 1 trillion dollars for 2% of the people is another fabrication by the right wing.

You guys are forgetting President Obama is 1/2 (50%) white or as our good friend from Italy said "A good tan". Yes, we are a rascist nation, yes we have bigots evrywhere you look.

However you can two of the silliest people on the playground and they will make a great act. i.e. Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, etc. You can take two of the dumbest farmers around and they will make a cooperative. You can take two of the most underrated and unappreciated business people and they can make a dynasty.

We the people need to start learning to live with each other, start appreciating our neighbor for not what we can gain from him, but how we can start making our neighborhood better for everyone. We need to start demanding of our civic leaders more than they are offering.

We need to stop the bickering everywhere, and get those doggone partisans back to the table and look at things from "I AM AMERICAN", instead of a 'D''R''I' after their names.

Until than we will always be divided. If that is the way it is going to be, I would just as soon move to Canada or anywhere but here, because we are doomed as a people and a nation.

Sadly, the only thing that has been revealed is how racist both sides are. I had no idea the depth of racism for blacks to white until I heard the Reverend Wright spew from the pulpit. Nothing seems to be bringing us together and I also agree with MLK about the content of character to form ones opinions about an individual.

President Obama has surrounded himself with some of the kookiest white people I have ever seen and shields himself from his policies through these guys. Van Jones at least was up front enough to declare his beliefs as a communistr yet we have more of the same from numerous cabinet members which should concern any redblooded American regardless of their skin color.

And speaking of race, to have Sharpton as some sort of upfront expert when he is horrible at jumping to conclusions, smearing the reputations of people and never offering an apology for distorting the facts.

I just want to say that I was absoutely apalled at the Stephanopolous show this Sunday Morning(1/11/09). I can't believe that George Stephanopolous would host a group of biggoted republicans(excluding Al Sharpton) on a news program that is supposed to be truthful, newsworthy, and honest. This was an absolute charade. I wonder if Stephanopolous has forgotten his big break(thanks to Bill Clinton) and possibly has forgotten the people who helped make him famous.

Get over it!! Grow up, study and do something with your life! Stop asking for a hand out and pull yourself up like millions of different ethnic races have done from our beginning as a nation including poor whites! If you work hard enough you can become anything! Look at Obama!

sure, race will continue as long as it is tought in most poor black households. when the parents curse and vilify whites the racial issue will continue. the same can be said about a very small minority of white households but when 95 % of the blacks vote for a black candidate for president, it will always have a disturbing effect of part of the white population, it smacks of blantant racisism, and that will cause a reaction that is BAD for all people of the USA.

Due to the catastrophic increase in the national debt since Obama took office, there are serious doubts as to whether or not the generation of my children, let alone my generation, will be able to afford a house. Say whatever you want about Obama, but the fact remains that we are no further along in the Middle East, our economy is in even worse shape, and the information being given out by the White House is repeatedly proven to be inaccurate.

the win wasn't a "landslide" but ignoring the facts it is also sometimes forgotten that Obama is, technically, 1/2 white. And grew up in a life of privledge and world-travelling (one that he has continued to this day- but now taxpayer funded- despite the recession and ongoing wars.) So while it is true that is he "black" in many eyes (or that his political handlers/advisors promote that he is "black") it is also true that he never experienced the actuality of poverty, racism, etc: Hawaii, private schools, world travels, elite schools, scholarships, fundraisers, mentoring by famous leftist personalities....this is not the normal upbringing of ANYONE- white or black!

@plainolcitizen: Yes, as a white person I have been stopped many times because of driving while white. Also, African-Americans vote about 90% Democratic each election-given that Obama was the fist Democrat since LBJ to get over 51% of the vote, its hardly surprising that he got more of the African-American community than usual.

@Ed: I grant you that Obama hasn't had the "typical" American upbringing. So? With very few exceptions, American presidents have been upper-class. Clinton, Reagan, and Jackson are the exceptions-- some of the few Presidents who come from the vast majority of the citizenry, the lower and middle classes. Furthermore, when Obama is not in Washington, he's meeting foreign dignitaries, which is in my view a hell of a lot better than clearing bush in Crawford. Also, you mention fundraisers among things that are bad...when it is a necessity to get elected.

1. I don't see that Obama is pitting us race against race, I think people see it that way. I did, however, see the Republican party engage in class war over W's 8 loooong years.
2. Shawn, you say that he never experienced the actuality of poverty, racism, private schools, world travels, blah, blah, blah...how would you describe Bush and the Bush Dynasty? Do you really think that any of the pols are in touch with "reality?" Really? None of them are. I think the last "poor" president we had was Abraham Lincoln.

You forgot that W. took us into a unilateral war (which a whole lot of us thought was unnecessary and seems to be the truth since (a) there were never any WMD found and (b) the taliban were and have been living in Afghanistan) which has mostly bankrupted us, and (c) the banks basically crashed on Bush's watch. So, if your spawn cannot afford a house, maybe you ought to look at the Bush family, Cheney, Rove, et. al. You have an extremely short memory. But it's always easier to blame people you hate.

Especially by his inaccurate reponse to the Skip Gates situation in Cambridge, Mass. He never should have responded without the facts. Also, race is used as a crutch to get what he wants in some situations! Look at Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. They should be leaders and lead by displaying their character. We have come a long way, however, character is the key. Mr. King was right. And I just don't see it come through in these leaders.

That racial devide really does not exsist untill some of the sharptons and carters keep bringing it up LOOK WHO WE ELECTED. And those were not just BLACK votes. Without that devide sharpton would not be of any importance.
