Will Palin Run? Can She Win?
November 13, 2009 7:19 AM
Those are the two big questions that hang over the most spectacular book-a-palooza since Colin Powell’s “My American Journey” in 1995. “Going Rogue” (according to AP leak) appears to spend a little more time settling scores than “Journey.” Former McCain aides have already fired back at Palin’s contention that she was lulled into the Couric interview by Nicolle Wallace’s assurances that Couric would be sympathetic because she is a working mom with a “self-esteem” problem. Didn’t happen, says one: “Who ever heard of anyone in network news with a self-esteem problem?”
McCain aides also deny that Palin was charged $50,000 for her own campaign vetting. McCain did pile-up about $50,000 in legal bills from investigations launched by the Alaska legislature after the campaign began, and she did send reps to John McCain after the campaign to get some help paying them back. But that turned out to be unnecessary when Palin backers stepped in to raise the cash.
On the big question, only Palin knows if she even wants to run for President in 2012. But as Matt Continetti points out in a smart Wall Street Journal piece today, she can put herself in a position to run with a successful book tour aimed at two goals:
1.) Softening up her personal negatives, with humanizing stories, a sense of humor, and a refined version of that “you-betcha” charm that made her a political super-nova in 2008
2.) Hardening up her political profile, with smart – and substantive – takes on the most important issues Americans care about right now: Not just “drill baby drill” but a broader playbook focused on jobs, the economy and health care – the issues independents care most about right now.
Can she recapture the Palin magic that made her a political phenomenon? Make herself a force beyond her staunch cultural conservative base?
I suspect that Palin, like Powell, will ultimately decide that a race is not for her. But the opportunity is there. No one else in politics aside from Obama can attract more cameras, mics and blog posts. “Going Rogue” shows what Palin thinks about her last campaign, but will she show the world now how a future one could be better, smarter and more successful?

Palin cannot be a viable alternative to Obama as long as she continues focusing only on herself and the "hardships" she faces, like mean McCain aides and the national press. Can't sustain that with 10.2 unemployment and the like...

I believe when Palin was campaigning there was an amount of $500,000 not $50,000 as stated by the McCain staff. There were problems with McCain's staff towards Palin due to the fact there was a lot of jealousy and hate because she became so popular and Palin made some of her own decisions. She would be a good contender for the Republican presidency in 2012 and after this book tour that will tell the story if she should run or not or campaign for a contender. It appears that some of the contenders don't want her to campaign for them because she would take the attention away from them. I hope she does run since I am now a republican and would definately vote her in. I believe that Obama is going to be a one term president like Carter because of his lack of decisions and policies plus he has not brought the troops back from Iraq like he promised in his campaign.

I honestly fail to understand how anyone can view her as a viable Presidential candidate. She makes W look erudite. She sure is popular, though, so maybe I'm wrong.

Democrats certainly hope she runs......

matt: At this point it will not take much to beat Obama if the college students who voted him in office wake up to the fact that he did not keep his campaign promises. Instead of sending troops to Afghan bring them home and also the troops from Iraq and call it a day. Nixon ended the Vietnam war after he was elected. Obama can do the same but he is keeping both wars going and we are losing more young people. I don't believe in defending another country. Let them fend for themselves. And America needs a good housecleaning of foreigners. In my time they were not allowed in and we should go back to that again. Ted Kennedy was the one responsible for having Johnson change it. He ruined this country.

President Palin......... chuckle.
Posted by: zane | Nov 13, 2009 8:02:49 AM
She should and she can win obama will a one term president. The mid term elections will take the wind out of his sails with big losses in the house and senate.Good buy Pelosi, Reid,Dodd to name a few
Posted by: Ron | Nov 13, 2009 8:03:33 AM
The young people don't know anything about politics, they just vote to be voting. Obama is a good person but don't have the capabilities of running this country. He chose Clinton's former administration to teach him how to make decisions and apparently it failed. Its too bad Bill Clinton could not run again. Hillary would have made a better president but there was a lot of jealousy towards her plus I believe that the corruption of Acorn possibly threw thousands of her votes away like the no doubt did to McCain. They need to be closed down for good so that won't happen again.

Palin is difinately NOT a team player...however, I do hope she runs for Pres 2012 on the Tea Party Ticket to Nowhere.

I voted for Sara Palin not John McCain.
I voted with the majority of republicans.
I can sleep at night, I did not vote for this disaster OBAMA. If Obama keeps blaming George Bush. We should bring George Bush to fix the problem.
If Obama keeps going, no one will even have any change to save.

When Faux News starts fact checking Palin then the bulb is dimming at a fast rate. Was it ever really lit in the first place?
Posted by: pamp205 | Nov 13, 2009 8:18:29 AM
I don't think Palin has a chance in 2012. She quit as governor which wasn't good. The whole "going rogue" thing is a response to McCain's handling of her. She has no political chops. I believe she will be just one big distraction to serious political candidates.

I am not a Palin supporter but Mickey Mouse will be able to beat Obama with the way the economy is heading. Wait and see.
Posted by: sammy | Nov 13, 2009 8:29:25 AM
Of course the McCain Campaign will deny the allegations. But are we going to believe them. In the history of any voting they managed to committ all the mistakes that were possible and beyond. They lost the election of McCain. And the votes that McCain ticket got were thanks to Palin. And Mariann yes I am afraid you are wrong....

Special note to Maurice:
I never voted for Sarah Palin nor John McCain.
I voted with the majority of people who have a brain and most certainly, a soul.
I can sleep at night, knowing that the stupid fratboy Bush administration and his Republican reprobate army can't destroy America and her economy with another war.
George Bush couldn't tie his shoes without Cheney and Rumhead providing an instruction manual.
I'm glad you're so miserable.

Palin was every bit as qualified to be Vice President as Obama was to be President. The character assassination and dragging of irrelevant family issues into the spotlight by the major broadcast media and most big city newspapers showed me the fear that the Democrats had of a conservative, outspoken outsider. My sense is Palin will have a political role on or by 2012, we just don't know quite what that role will be. This time, however, she will have more input in defining her positions, strategy and tactics. There are a number of us who like Sarah Palin and are totally dissatisfied with the hard, far left turn this administration has taken. Obama was right, we DO need a change, starting in 2010 and finally, in 2012.

almost every Obama news agency keeps slamming her. They know she is a major threat and can win. especialy with this Administration that cows down to Polosi and Reid.

Nixon didn't end the Vietnam War. He resigned from office in 1974 after being impeached, and the War was still going on until 1975 when the North Vietnamese took over Saigon and we ran out in a hurry. On another note, Palin is an airhead. She is dumber than dirt so don't compare her to Obama who is intelligent and educated. He is a Harvard Law Graduate, Magna Cum Laude, no less, and taught Constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for 10 years. He wasn't just a "community organizer" as Palin kept screaming at all her rallies. She is a dimwit. She will never have the creds. to be President. You can't fix stupid!!

Of course she can win. Her crowds almost matched BO's after only 2 months of campaigning, and with HORRIFIC media coverage. BO campaigned for several YEARS with fawning media coverage.
Without the restraints of terribly run mccain team holding her back, the possiblities are endless. The more people hear from her the more they like her. Sorry liberal obamabots...
By 2012, provided the liberal socialists in power haven't completely destroyed our economy, Sarah Palin will be a welcome change.

The McCain campaign created a monster when Palin was picked to be VP merely because she was a woman and they thought they could get the Hillary sympathizers vote. If she had not been "chosen", she would still be a nobody living in Alaska harpooning fish and shooting animals from a helicopter!

If all you got to pin your hopes on in 2012 is Sarah Palin, you Republicans are truly desperate. Get someone who can bring in the moderates and independents otherwise you don't have a chance against Obama. He hasn't been President officially for a year yet and he has made a lot of changes and more is coming - for the better I might add. Once this economy (which Bush/Cheney destroyed!!) begins to turn around, you guys won't have a chance, regardless of who you put up against Obama. Get used to it!

If Palin is so stupid, as you obamabots love to say, then why did she out-debate a 35 YEAR sitting senator for 90 minutes in front of 70 million people?
Biden said 14 lies/innaccurate statements which the media ignored. Her supposed flaw was that she winked. That is all the media could say about her performance..."She winked! She's an idiot!"
She didn't "crack" under the pressure, as the media anticipated.
If she chooses to run, I would wager that she could out-debate BO as well. Have you ever heard him speak when his teleprompter malfunctions?
"I uuuuuuhhhhhh ummmmmmm uuuuuu, well, i uuuuuuuhhhhhh uummmm".
BO is also the guy who said "I have been to all 57 states". Very intelligent indeed.
PALIN 2012

I am so sick and tired of hearing about this political hack. She is no more interesting today then she was during the campaign. The only interesting reading about her is waht is appearing in the National Inquirer and the other tabloid papers. That is where the truth about her and her hick family. She and her hick family have received their 15 minutes of fame. Must the american people have to put up with her mindless dribble and the the conservative and neo-cons mindless diatribe. Further softening up palin is putting lip stick on a big. To cover her must indicate a slow newsday and I hope her book fails miserable but the only way it can be given away is with a tankful of gasoline from refined crude but from her mouth or the conservatives and the neo-cons.

Sarah - please run - it would be entertainment for a long long time. Tina Fey would have material for years, Jon Stewart also - please run!
Posted by: cjr | Nov 13, 2009 10:15:31 AM
you repubs simply don't get it. Just because someone is "popular" doesn't deem them qualified to be the POTUS. Sheesh. What's with you? Sarah Palin is dumber than George .... come on ........ Look where he's taken us ....
